3.0, the first actual decent version of Windows. 1 and 2 were crap. 3.0 was good but not much driver support, fixed when 3.1 came out. Win 2000 is still my favorite but 3.11 was decent as well, using DR DOS instead of MS Dos. I hated 95 and 98 and the 16 IRQ limit sucked for gamers and power users running multiple modems and scanners/printers. Win 2000 fixed that with 256 IRQs and I loved it for that reason.

@@eric-. When i was taking my CompTIA class at my vocational school, my IT teacher was just a wiz. Knew everything and was able to help with hands on. But he was horrible at explaining things. He tried to help explain to me what VLANs are and how they work but I was lsot. As soon as he created a hands on project for me to do with VLANs, I understood it very well. So I've some people who are more teaching oriented need to give a more hands on approach and let the lesson and objectives explain themselves and he be there to guide us. I wish I knew more IT guys who are as articulate as Anthony. I know some peopel who are so much better than me (cuz I'm not the greatest obviuosly) who can get tasks done left and right but can't explain what they're doing for crap.

I love the more frequent Anthony videos. The general direction of the channel with Linus slowly stepping back is good. I like how the different hosts are kind of falling into their own niches. This was one of his worst videos idk this was very unlike Anthony too. This isn't even linux so it's not Anthony's specialty, and while he's great at most stuff, Windows troubleshooting tends to be an occam's razor thing instead of a 'okay let's check the registry log and dlls loaded and then go check the wiring in the walls' and more like 'the bios update bricked it dude' Not Anthony's fault, the problem given was an unexplained boring one that was unsuited to a video nor did it really help anyone here (lots of people now have the wrong idea about power savings settings imo), but this episode was really poorly written in general. Seemed very rushed. Saying the problem is *shrug* fixed doesn't mean shit. Create a repeatable situation and then solve it. This was just 'fiddle with pc and then teach ppl about event viewer' which doesn't help anyone ngl. It's also an AMD only suggestion since C1E/EIST in intel based BIOS works completely differently

That is by itself quite impossible. Each of those individual things can have many, many error codes, which by themselves each can have many different causes and fixes. Guess you could start to learn how to read the windows event log and go from there, but be prepared to dive deep on the technical stuff.

I had this exact issue with my computer! I had built a PC about 5 years ago. About 3 years after creation it randomly start doing shutting down for a second and turning right back on. It would not matter on what I was doing, watching videos, playing video games, researching topics, sitting ideal. Took it to multiple tech/computer repair places, no one could diagnose my problem as they could not replicate it so they didn't know where to even look, later found out they just cleaned my pc with compressed air and called it a day..... I decided to start researching the problem and trying to fix it myself by replacing every component in my computer. Figured must be a power issue since it will shut down then come right back on, replaced. Nope can't be that, then figured okay maybe my graphics card is getting too hot, replaced that. Same outcome, maybe my liquid cooler isn't cooling the CPU enough, replaced. Same problem, okay well maybe its my motherboard, maybe its got a short somewhere and that's what's causing it, replaced. Nope, long shot but maybe somehow, somewhere my case is causing a static shock to my motherboard, replaced it. Same issue. Okay well at this point it has to either be my CPU or my RAM. Replaced CPU, same issue. Finally made the "right" discission and just built a brand new one.

I'm going through that right now, it turns out I have some bent motherboard pins... I tried changing thermal paste, but it was just a temporary fix. Also, I noticed that my 3.3V rail is only at 2.8V, and 12V is at 11.5V, so it may be a factor as well

It's worth noting that since he is overclocking and updated his bios the offsets that are saved may be incorrect internally, even if they are displaying correctly, this would potentially also lead to ACPI events. This can often be fixed by doing some action that causes the values to be rewritten, and thus updated.

I've had issues with bad ram timings after an BIOS update. I think it's always best to reset all settings and start fresh when you upgrade the BIOS.

@@flowerdealer also you shouldn't really have any expectations of being able to overclock your CPU. If it runs at stock speeds without shutoffs, it's not broken. As soon as you overclock even slightly you risk having random shutoffs. Honestly given it's a work PC, even though it's LTT, I'm surprised that it is overclocked. I think this video is actually bad advice on these grounds. The first thing you should do is turn off the overclock if you are having random shutdowns.

@@asitisrequiredasitisrequir3411 In the frame of this video though, the problem only existed after a bios update - it's clearly been overclocked beforehand and caused no issues. Obviously a BIOS update could definitely mess up the overclock settings, but as long as you're sticking with safe parameters, overclocking is safe and should not be causing any issues unless you're really cranking the max out of your CPU. Anecdotal evidence but i've had my 3.4Ghz i5 OCed to 4Ghz for years and have had zero issues with it.

Yes, one thing they didn't talk about, was the part where updating the BIOS may have partially caused the issue. If he updated, then didn't reset the BIOS to defaults, then reload his settings, it could be there were some settings from the old BIOS which were upsetting the new BIOS. I've had issues like that after BIOS updates, where there can be a LOT of quirky behaviour, but reset the BIOS settings, then redo all your settings, and its usually fine afterwards. I suspect that some updates change the locations that they store info, and if old settings are in there, it can effect the new BIOS programming, with unexpected results. So the TL;DR is, if you've updated your BIOS, reset the settings to defaults, then re-enter your settings, and that can avoid issues like this.

As an IT guy, tbh I think my first step would have been to disable overclocking and set all the BIOS settings back to default. Then again, no one should be overclocking the Dells in the office in the first place! A bit different of a scenario here. Also, this video gives a couple details I think could use more emphasis: 1. Can the issue be reproduced 2. As I'm sure you remember, Linus said himself at the beginning of the video that it only started happening after a BIOS update. As a fellow IT guy, I'd say there's a more than reasonable possibility of this being the cause. Reverting the BIOS to the previous version (much like uninstalling a broken patch on a server) would be my first port of call.

@@mattcarlin2873 I had an issue with my asus board when updating the bios to a windows 11 compatible bios(10th gen intel) and the cpu was stuck in power save c states, so there is 100% some bios issue with asus motherboards, you can't actually downgrade the bios, you have to load it onto a usb and plug into a specific usb port that will auto load any bios image on the flash drive, this fixed my issue, and all the bios update is supposed to do is enable tpm2.0 by default.

If the BIOS update was bugged and known by Asus and assuming the board was still supported, the next revision could have the issue addressed.

@@emac3628 Yes, though if that was a priority, you could note down what settings were changed from defaults before resetting. The advantage there is you can very quickly confirm or rule out nonstandard BIOS settings as a cause. You could even do a binary search of all the changed BIOS settings to relatively quickly narrow down which setting it was, even if you knew nothing about intel power states.

Depends on the person using, whenever its a somewhat advanced user idling shutdown is almost always a bad voltage curve, like 99% of the times.

I haven't watched the whole video yet, I've had the same issue with my Asus Z690 Extreme where it randomly shuts down on idle, and it turned out to be a USB issue according to the Windows LiveKernelReports dump files. Fiddling around with the USB inputs, moving them around etc. seems to have fixed the problem.

Had a USB issue before that the connected device would cause system hangs. USB can be finicky, simply removing the device or trying different ports can work nicely as you did. Good job on the self trouble shooting :)

@@Alyzah Not in all cases. Depending on what peripherals or accessories you're trying to use, some things work better in USB 2.0 ports than USB 3.x, and vice versa. There's a multitude of potential compatibility issues when using devices, cables, and ports, across differing USB generations.

Holy cow! Thank you so much for making this video! My desktop computer had been shutting off like this for over a year, every day or two. Not powering down, not hibernating or sleeping, not rebooting, not blue screening. It was just suddenly shutting off, like the power was interupted. And as best I could tell, nothing was overheating. I didn't have ACPI configuration settings available to me in the BIOS, but in Windows 11, under Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Edit Plan Settings, I clicked "Change advanced power settings". In the Power Options dialog, the "Processor power managment > Minimum processor state" was set to 5%. I changed this to 80% a week ago, and my computer hasn't shut off since!!! Knock on wood, I think this fixed the issue!

This is usually caused by "Power Supply Idle Control" setting in the bios for AMD CPUs. You should try that instead of disabling C-State altogether. That fixed the same issue for me.

What value should it be set at? it has 3 options: Auto, low and typical. When using the 1usmus power plan with zen2 cpus it's suggested to have it set at low. However I'm not not sure what's best for other cpus like zen3 or threadripper.

I once simply replaced a faulty blowing PSU, and it solved the immediate issue. Also helps run your systems on stable power sources, and backup power batteries. Otherwise, hardware does need to be replaced from time to time, depending on the quality of the components.

This explains a lot about issues we had years ago with ESX hosts in our datacenter randomly rebooting when they were not set to Static High Performance mode in the BIOS. We also had to set High Performance in vSphere to ensure no random performance dips. My understanding is that all these power saving features use C state control. I just never knew that they caused these kinds of power target effects. Thanks for the deep dive.

Thanks for doing this video guys - it finally solved a problem with my new build that had me going nuts. The crazy part was that I could run Cinebench all day without issues but the moment the PC was idle it would shut down. Yeah, this is more like a temporary workaround rather than a real fix. I was hoping Anthony would actually get to the bottom of this. Was very surprised that loading optimized BIOS defaults wasn't recommended, this is troubleshooting step 1 or 2, especially on PCs that are overclocked or not running default BIOS config (like it was in this case). Now as for root cause of this issue, it could be hardware related, like PSU for example (some PSUs behave weird with C states).

Anthony dismissed the UPS quite quickly, but remember that many UPS have USB cables that plug into your computer to initiate a safe shutdown if a fault is detected. If the UPS was giving off false positives, random shutdowns without anything else being affected could very well be the symptom. On the other hand, many UPSs would also be shrieking their alarm constantly in such a situation, but you can’t always count on that.

From my experience with the UPS auto shutdown it will give you a log code when it does shutdown due to that. The other thing is that on UPS that have that option you always want to set a buffer time so when it loses power due to a power blink it doesn't immediately try to shutdown. I know on my UPS that if I lose power I have 18 minutes of power under light load so I only will shutdown when its a disruption of over 5 minutes.

While a fair point, it depends _entirely_ on the nature of the "shutdown". Keep in mind there is a difference between an initiated shutdown and a power-off event, which is instant and it's usually going to be a internal self-protection mechanism of the PSU or some 'event'(fault, protection, whatever) coming from the motherboard via the 24-pin cable telling the PSU to turn off.

@@modulusshift it's a straight up crash. And it is logged as kernel or cache issues. My ryzen have this gremlin too. Vastly related to c-state power plans and poorly configured LLC out of the box. but disabling that and cranking up the LLC makes the cpu run pretty hot and drawing unnecessary lots of power even when idle. It prompted me to switch to intel and that eases my sanity.

One step I recommend in troubleshooting is that if you have a transient, first try to turn it into a reproducible. That way, you can test after the fix. Not always possible or practical, but IF you have a transient issue, trying to make it reproducible is a very good first step. Thanks for the great video!

Anthony probably knew what this was before he even touched the computer, but went through the motions for the viewers' sake. Ryzen C-states (specifically C6) have been a known issue to the Linux community for awhile, and the only reason more Windows people haven't had this issue is that Windows usually has enough background activity that it can't go into a deep C-state. The "fun" part about C-state troubleshooting is that the effect can be esoteric and the cause obscured. Linus' issue was easy to identify and troubleshoot. My PC kept freezing, but only after I loaded the GPU and took the load off too quickly. Sounds like a GPU issue, but it persisted across cards and disabling C6 fixed it - Even though loading/unloading the CPU didn't cause the issue.

8:37 turning off C-state on my bios fixed my PC from randomly crashing once in a while. I first thought it was a PSU problem because I noticed it a lot after upgrading my GPU (2060 to 3060) but problem consisted even after upgrading it (from 650 to 750). Then I saw this video and decided to try everything on this guide and turning c-state off fixed it. Thank you Linus for having the same problem and thank you Anthony for fixing it
