Seun this is a cautionary tale for everyone. I took down 6 week old box braids last year, and because I was rushing that day (yeah you did say never rush this) I jumped in the shower BEFORE fully getting all the shed hair out. It had already taken 2 days to take the braids out. I figured I would just finish detangling and de-shedding as I washed and conditioned my hair. WRONG! My hair matted - I mean like beyond matted - the mats were hard like plastic. You could not even stab or poke through the mats with the end of a comb or even the tip of scissors!! More water, more moisturizer made it worse. I was crying like a baby. So my husband tried to help and used some product he uses on his horses' manes when they mat up. Didn't work. He was ripping my hair out. And he admitted sometimes he just had to cut the horses' manes off. I cried more. The next day I called my beautician (not the braider) and she knew what happened before I could finish the story. She said, "Don't tell me, you didn't comb all the shed hair out first. Don't you know water is a locking agent?" She finished slowly ripping out mats, and I avoided having to "big chop" but I had a bunch of 1-2 inch short patches. Now I know water can be used to accelerate the locking process if you want to dread your hair faster. Who knew? I didn't. As the shed hair began to work its way out while I washed and conditioned, the water locked and matted my hair. I knew about de-shedding after braids. But no one EVER told me what might happen if you introduce water before completely de-shedding. This was my 4th-5th time having braids, but the other times I didn't wash my hair the same day I finished taking the braids down, and I kind of combed loose hair out over the next few days. Sorry this was long. Just had to share and hope it helps someone else. BTW this can happen to any hair type. I have 4a-3c hair. It did mat a little more in the 4 type areas, but I've been told that any type hair can mat. Ladies please don't allow any water on your hair until you have finished carefully combing ALL the loose shed hair out. My protective style turned into a big setback.

Just a tip for everyone who is natural (especially type 4) watching Seun lovely video and following this method, when detangling try just using plain coconut oil (or any oil) as a pre-poo and detangler. I use to use leave-in conditioner too or any creamy/watery detangling product but they make my hair wet/damp and then my hair tangles very easily when it is dirty and then become wet, also the conditioner drys down and then I have to add more and then the hair gets cakey. The oil by itself provides slip/lubrication without actually making my hair wet, plus coconut oil is a penetrating oil so it will actually soften the hair from within. P.S. coconut oil also can not make most people with protein sensitive hair react, b/c the protein molecules in the coconut oil are too big to actually get into the hair. The proteins will just lay on top which is where the complaints about "brittle or dry" hair comes from with coconut oil, I personally only use coconut oil as a prepoo or mixed in with other oils to grease my scalp and lock in moisture after cleansing.
@mzhotniz86
@mzhotniz86 3 жыл бұрын
Coconut oil absolutely makes my hair brittle asf. I have fine 4c hair. I spritiz water on my braids , then eden bodyworks conditioner. Then I put avocado oil on the braids right before I start to take them down. I cant just use oil ive literally had breakage from doing that. 4c hair needs either a light spritz of water or leave in conditioner BEFORE unraveling the braids...NOT wet, lightly damp. Combing dry 4c hair is an absolute no no. Oils are sealants. Coconut oil is a penetrating sealant. So if you have low porosity hair, it can absolutely lock moisture out and cause breakage. Just do a light spritz of water before adding any oils...even if youre about to wash your hair
@neoagegirlthemaverick7468
@neoagegirlthemaverick7468 3 жыл бұрын
@@mzhotniz86 You do whats best for you, I was just explaining the science of coconut oil. I suggested the best use for it is as a pre-poo and detangling agent (to be done on dry hair before washing as in Seun's method), also I do not nor was recommending people "comb" bone dry 4c hair but if your hair is dirty you do have to detangle your hair dry or risk matting when washing, I recommend finger detangling when using oil to remove all the shed hair and dirt. I also suggested to use it in a mix of oils for a scalp (not hair) sealant: I personally combine coconut oil with avocado oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, castor oil, and olive oil. *All* oils are sealants but they "seal" in different ways based on the lack of or availability of triglycerides, from the available research concerning coconut oil on hair, there aren't any solid studies confirming that it "absolutely lock moisture out and cause breakage" if any thing it did the opposite and helped prevent hydro fatigue in hair and helped prevent too much moisture and proteins from leaving your hair shaft when washing. I also have fine 4c hair and use to dislike coconut oil until I realized I was using it wrong, like as a stand alone sealant. I changed my mind when I started using it as pre-poo and have not experience any brittleness or breakage, plus when washing most of the oil comes out and my hair is softer and doesn't feel as dry after the wash. Also you don't need that much coconut oil and it doesn't have to be left on the hair over night, simply 30 minutes as a pre-poo hot oil treatment or 2 hours under a bag or cap without additional heat is enough. Please refer to the articles/links attached, all are from medical institutes or individuals with a PhD in Chemistry/Biology. Also one last thing to note is that most shampoos/cleansers are more on the alkaline side of the pH scale which alkaline substances swell and force the hair cuticles to opens which isn't good for hair so using coconut or any other penetrating oil before will help counteract that forced swelling. I use clay to cleanse my hair and scalp and that is also more alkaline. Every person depending on how they use it and their actual chemical structure of their hair will experience different results, but I wanted to make known the full story so that people can make educated decisions to understand why something may or may not work fro them. And there are other penetrating oils that can be used if one doesn't really like coconut oil, my next favorite is olive oil. Avocado oil has some penetrating properties but isn't as good as coconut or olive oil, so that probably might be more beneficial for those with low porosity. (Article talking about coconut oils benefit of protection from hydro fatigue) www.beauty-review.nl/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Effect-of-mineral-oil-sunflower-oil-and-coconut-oil-on-prevention-of-hair-damage.pdf (General ways to use coconut oil on hair) www.healthline.com/nutrition/coconut-oil-and-hair (Blog from Michelle,PhD in Chemistry also has YT Channel, on chemical workings and structure of Coconut oil on hair) labmuffin.com/why-coconut-oil-is-the-best-hair-oil-and-how-to-use-it/ (Curly Chemistry, cosmetic chemist, video on P.M.P method, skip to 3:17 for mention of coconut oil) kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWTTpXabh6ismdU

If you have problems with bad dandruff and/or flaking, you should grease (not oil but actual HAIR GREASE) your scalp really good and the day before. Use plenty and work/massage it in thoroughly. You might have to throw in an extra round of shampooing but I swear to you, it TRULY does help loosen those flakes and dried skin cells. Also....it might be hard to break the habit, but DO NOT USE YOUR NAILS to scrub your scalp! USE YOUR FINGERTIPS ONLY! (It was very hard for me, but I finally won lol). If you must/just gotta use your nails, do so very gently. If you're 'digging' and scratching really hard (Yea! I know it feels good lol) you're further irritating your scalp and exacerbating the problem! Just think and compare to if you dug into your arm or leg skin the same way, what it would do and look like.

For those with dandruff problems. Use a medicated shampoo. I use Denorex on the rare occasions I have a flare up. Mine is actually psoriasis, not regular dandruff. However, you can't just use it like regular shampooing. You have to give it time to work! Thoroughly wet your hair then wring out excess water. Apply enough shampoo to saturate down to your scalp then massage it in with your fingertips really good. Let it sit for a good five minutes then rinse. If you have lots and lots of dandruff, shampoo with regular shampoo first to loosen and get rid of as many flakes as possible. THEN do the medicated application on your second round. NOTE: Don't leave medicated shampoo in more than 10 mins!! I tried different amounts of time with medicated. Anything over 10 mins dried the heck out of my scalp and was harsh on my hair when it was permed. I'm natural now and no ill effects. I hope these tips help someone. Oh I forgot: During severe psoriasis outbreak the itching can DRIVE YOU MAD!! 'Scalpicin' is excellent to stop itching! It's not cheap but trust me, I'd pay double the price because that stuff is worth every cent!! Good luck everyone!

I wish a lot of black women (idk why I said black lol we all black here... it's our issue tho) who wear protective styles would watch this. Literally almost everyone I know takes it down and combs it completely dry and then they have thinning ends. But they want their hair to grow. Smh but no one listens to me. It's frustrating because I'm like I KNOW your hair can grow but you won't let it! But you want mine tho! 😂 But I always braid my sons hair and I take it down and finger detangle with my hands only (I keep my shears handy for any single strand knots) and I use my own products to lubricate and moisturize. His hair is mbl and perfectly even. He's 4.

I'm trying very hard to keep my hair in protective base as long as possible. I start itching around a week or two because the concept of not washing my hair gets on my mental too bad. My hair is very short, but growing out. I used yarn to braid it down, then crocheted on short human afro kinky hair. Tje yarn actually holds my castor oil and Cantu Deny Dry moisturizers in and doesn't break off my hair like braiding hair. I never thought to redo my protective styles without rebranding my hair. After watching your videos years ago I believed my relaxed hair could achieve tail length. I'm on 14 inches now and so happy, except that my hair shedded alot when I wash, that it made me hate and dread wash days.

Please show how you wrap your hair in a video. You're my favourite hair person on KZbin. I've really been on a plateau but I just realized I'm losing length cos of impatience and washing before detangling properly. Sometimes the time spent detangling feels sinful 😩

Wow, your hair is so long and healthy. 😊 You do a great job with it. You do such a good job that you could be a hair stylist. 🤗 And I didn't know you started doing KZbin videos back in 2016. That's the year I found your video about the Jannie wig. I like that wig. Your video on it is the main reason I got it. I still have it too, and it still looks good. 😁

The difference here between my hair and yours, is you have a perm. My hair is totally natural! So, it takes a lot more patience to comb through my hair when I'm shampooing and conditioning it. I just wanted to differentiate that you have a perm, so for someone with 100% natural/no chemical hair, it takes even more work.
