I appreciate how kindly you speak of your old self! Your positive focus on how you presented yourself how you wanted to and experimented with different styles, even ones outside social “norms” and ones that (looking back) may not necessarily suit your current taste anymore, is inspiring. It’s refreshing to hear such a positive outlook and was part of why this was such an awesome video. I was also reminded of this quote: “People say “phase” like impermanence means insignificance. Show me a permanent state of the self.” from thegirlwiththeloontattoo. Great video again! :)

I noticed that, too! Most take the "ew, cringey" route with these types of videos. I'm all for having a little laugh over yourself and your past choices. Sometimes, however, it gets depressing to see people look at their past styles with disdain. As if there's something inherently wrong with dressing how you like regardless of what you may like in the future :(

So true! It makes me so sad to see when people make fun of their old selves, especially when they were children/young teens. I mean most of us had an awkward phase and depending on how old you are maybe that was peak fashion back then, no matter how silly it may look now. But it's so nice to see someone being kind to themselves.
@rhonddalesley
@rhonddalesley 3 жыл бұрын
That quote had me thinking, which I like. The way we say ‘oh, it’s JUST a phase’ minimalises whatever it is that we’re referring to and I think that a lot of people say it as a get out when criticised or embarrassed about their behaviour, or taste, or whatever the ‘phase’ is that they’re experiencing at that time

“I’ll probably never be full vintage.” Same though. That’s why I love your videos because I can relate more to the mixing vintage and modern type thing because it’s more attainable and realistic for me. I still love people who commit to full vintage, but I know I never will achieve that.

@@alycats94 I worked in daycare for 3 years, and for the last 6 months or so started wearing leggings and a black midi skirt (with great pockets because I made it myself!) to work and my confidence was so much higher, feeling very cute and feminine every day! Plus when I visited the pre k rooms with kids that could talk the girls were always sure to let me know they loved my skirt! I was the only teacher that wore any skirts to school, so it was something the little girls noticed and loved. Leggings were definitely a must for working with toddlers and infants though 😊

💕 Love 💕 vintage, but I also value modern fashion. Frankly, I love the versatility of being able to dress according to my whims & occasion. 🤗Tend to prefer skirts over pants year round. Like to layer bike shorts under midi & above to protect my modesty😔 (& avoid 👀peek-a-boo moments). Also leggings under maxi lengths when it gets chilly. 😖Personally, I don't like to feel like I'm wearing some sort of a costume unless it's specifically for 🎃 Halloween or a themed event🥳 (toga, Hobbit, Harry Potter, Matrix, West Side Story, Great Gatsby, Jane Austen, etc.). 😉Grew up going regularly to the Disneyland Resort where only young children were permitted to wear actual Disney costumes. However, that didn't mean you were off the hook. It still meant you had to come up with some sort of special outfit in honor of this 💫treasured destination. Today, ↪️DisneyBounding allows enthusiasts to channel that creativity in an entirely new direction. Creating an exact copy of your favorite character is still taboo😱 as well as rather intimidating😬. To do well, it's a feat that requires considerably more cash 🤑 and ✂️serious sewing🪡skills. 😁It takes far more creativity to recreate a look INSPIRED by a Disney character. It forces you to use your imagination to pull elements of their essence to make a fresh authentic take that rings true. It allows you the choice to follow the original in a more updated "traditional" manner or totally put your own twist🪢 on it. IMO, it's a lot easier to either use you own clothes or source thrift store items to come up with something striking in this category. 🎉It's also lots of fun, w/o feeling too fantasy. 🤔 Think of applying this same technique to get inspiration from other sources in the world🌎 around you (say icons, heroes, influencers, films,TV, literary, etc.). It's a smart way to develop your own unique style. It also allows you to exercise your imagination 💪muscles. It can help define what you like as well as what suits you. It's a technique that encourages you to 🛍️ shop your own closet. It helps train you about styling your garments in 🆕 ways. ♻️ This supports a more sustainable lifestyle. 😁True strength & creativity takes more practice than tossing bags of money💰 at a problem. Besides, if you're into more true vintage, you can easily find garments that can be faked for a variety of eras. Don't feel like you have to restrict yourself to authentic period pieces at the start. 🛡️ HistoryBounding is different than historical recreations that often demand a higher pricetag, attention to detailing, & a far more superior sewing skill level to meet authenticity standards. 👩‍⚖️Purists want everything just precisely so. 🤩Honestly respect & admire men & women that basically stick to any single style〰️and totally own it. I simply find that rather limiting. One day, I'm feeling sporty, the next ultra feminine, another moment preppy, etc. l don't like to be restricted. 🍀Best of luck on your style journey. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

I’m also a true phase person in lots of aspects of my life not just in clothing. I’m only 21 but have gone through preppy, 2012-indie, grunge, punk, boho, dirty hippie, goth, vintage academic, all vintage 80s (this was a fun one haha), minimalist, etc. I always used to think this was a “bad” character trait because people tend to see it that way, but as I’m growing up I’ve realized it’s just how I have fun with my appearance (something I really don’t take too seriously) & express myself. Loved this video!

I also go through phases and now I’m in my early 30s and I’m trying to figure out what my style is. You start to hear more and more about being “age appropriate” which I don’t typically adhere to but I don’t really want to feel like I’m trying to look young. This was such a relatable video. ❤️

I remember those early days of elfia video's and goth make-up looks! I think I started watching those when I was 13 or so. I have been through most of these phases myself, from Omnia and Lord of the Rings, the lace and frilly skirts, to not caring at all in university. For a few years I have been making historical costumes, and am slowly getting into vintage fashion. I am 22 now, and by watching this video I just realised that I have come a long way. Thank you Lucy for being there when I grew up ❤

I was hoping you'd do a video like this! I can relate as I also always dressed really eccentric. I wore skull t-shirts in my early teens. In my mid to late teens I basically switched back and forth from Victorian to Georgian to 50s looking dresses. I even made my own Recency costume from scratch and wore it out and about haha but like you said I didn't care either! Now that I'm in my early 20s I wear very feminine clothes but less 'costume-like', basically what I would describe as an academic Oxford look, but a bit girlier! Also oh my goodness, can't believe you also wore a dirndl! Me too, I used to absolutely love them after watching The Sound of Music. Still do but I don't wear them anymore!

I've been watching your videos since I was about 14/15 (2009) and I'm 25 now. I think your fashion sense has determined some of the clothing I've worn, as I've always found I've had similar interests like LOTR, dnd, history etc. I definitely relate to going through clothing phases, even now! Even though my standard for the last few years has been leggings and a t-shirt/jumper, some days I still want to be full 'fairy princess' and other days I go for a more vintage look! Really enjoyed this video! ☕️💕

Lol I remember wearing jeans like that in high school-it was the late 90s, so we wore mostly flared jeans & big jeans like JNCOs & Kikwear. And the bottoms would get so worn, like not only chewed up looking, but eventually, there'd be a hole from where your heels hit the hem. Sometimes a strip would start to detach & get steppes on in the hallway-you'd see the occasional rotted off denim strips on the floor in the school hallways😂😂😂

wow, we have more in common then I thought. I had all those phases except that my mom didn't let me buy clothes until I was like 16 years old. At that time I had already done 3 phases and didn't know where I was going. I experimented with clothing, makeup and watched a lot of tv series about fashion. I tried a rocky look and more feminine clothing, that still inspires my day to day look. I tried to wear more colors and patterns and doing my hair. And now I'm gravitating towards vintage fashion.

It's really interesting to see people who are into vintage/retro fashion and alternative fashion in general go through their style evolutions and see how they got there. I myself was always interested in vintage trinkets and a more old fashioned and feminine way of dressing since I was very young. I didn't start experimenting with fashion on myself until around my early teens. That's around the time I got into manga and saw a lot of fashion I actually wanted to wear and tried mimicking it. My parents are very traditional so they were very confused by some or a lot of my choices and that did hold me back some besides me being extremely shy and suffering from intense social anxiety. I went through a lot of styles including mori kei, natural kei, otome kei, and lolita, retro, k-fashion but more recently merged what I liked from the different styles into something very personal. I'm sure me being a lindy hopper has helped retro become more prominent in my style though. xP Overall I'm just walking around with pastel colours in alternative fashion so I'm sure I stand out like a sore thumb in this more rural area, but no one approaches me so I'm able to go about my day normally.

I had a cringy goth phase with lots of crushed stretch velvet, then back to t-shirts and jeans, and then half a year of being a massive ita and then when I got the basics down made the mistake of trying to wear all the main styles.

Lucy, have you ever done a video on Kibbe types, or learned about them? This retrospective was so cool and makes it easy to see all kinds of silhouettes on you! That modern tan and navy outfit at 17:21 is SO stunning on you, and it makes me think you are some kind of Gamine, maybe a Soft Gamine! Same with the 60's beehive at shift dress at 15:50. The brown sweater and soft hair look at 16:27 is also beautiful on you, giving me a Brigitte Bardot vibe, and guess what... She's a Soft Gamine too!! I have to say, I think a lot of the longer, tailored, more vintage or more Dramatic elements you've been wearing most recently aren't as flattering on you as those past looks. I'd be really interested to see you do a series diving into Kibbe types and trying to find your own, maybe even a collab with Aly Art or Merriam Style to help consult on your style! I totally relate to your style journey and going through phases, and finding my Kibbe type has been so helpful to finding the things that are truly the most flattering on me. Check it out!

I loved this! ❤ here in Canada high school girls all dressed the same as well. There were 3 different popular styles (girly, athletic, and casual) but they all looked like uniforms because the cut, colours, and brands were all the same. I've always let my interests define my fashion, even before I really became aware of it 😂 I'm so happy I went through it all though, it helped me define my current style. Fantasy, history, and nature are my biggest inspirations, along with pagan and goth elements✨

I never really got to experiment much in high school. Since I'm a larger girl I couldn't find cute stuff in my size where I lived in the 90s. So I usually ended up wearing men's jeans (that I tailored) and oversized tops. Lots of plaid. Very grunge and tomboyish most of the time. Though I admit that I had a LARGE collection of butterfly clips and scrunchies. Then I went to college in a bigger city where I had more choice in fashion. I went from basically dressing like a man to straight up goth with romantic elements (kinda similar to your looks). After a couple years of that, I toned it down quite a lot. Just dark clothing with more feminine, flattering cuts. My style now leans towards unisex for everyday with nicer, more feminine things when I feel like putting in effort.

The preppy, the rocker, the goth, and very neon pop haha. Its all so great. I think you should definitely keep up dressing the way you want and not paying attention to society. You being happy is more important. I just wish vintage fashion was easier to find. 😂 ( and also, its really fun to see that you went through a gothy stage as well! In 2003-05 I was 8-10yo wearing tube tops and mini skirts (in my room cause my mom wouldn't let me go in public like that lmfao. 2006-2007 I wore Jeans, tshirts, and my blue sparkly DC Shoes every day! 2008-2010 I was rocking that "emo" style everyone was trying. 2011-2013 I was in full swing trying to find my style wearing skirts and any cardigan I could get my hands on. then in 2014 I went into a fashion shell during college and having my kid in 2016. But now I am opening back up and discovering what shapes look flattering on me. I was always overweight and didnt realize I had an hourglass shape! I still love my floral and animal prints. I rock my crew necks and skinnies but now I am transitioning into high waists and blouses, finding a business casual vibe! Ive got 2020 Vision for this coming year! Thank you for inspiring me to keep growing!

Love this. My style changed so much over the years as well. All dresses as a kid, then basketball t-shirts and boy clothes around age 12 (brother influence), then gothic, then skater style, then surfer girl style, then outdoorsy hiker style (lol), then in my mid 20’s I went to basic generic The Gap style, late 20’s I entered the 60’s until my early 30’s thanks to Mad Men. I love the 60’s so much. Now in my mid-late 30’s I go for “Parisian chic”. 😄

I can definitely relate to wardrobe phases. I had a very brief style phase that I outright regret when I was 12...I had a fascination with 70's fashion. It lasted for about half a year. Ages 13-15 I went through a phase when I wasn't comfortable with myself and wore very baggy clothes. I think it was a side-effect of bullying that happened during the 70's phase. I just shut out current fashion after that. I've never really been one to follow trends, unless it was something that happened to coincide with my own interests. Lately, I've been simplifying my style to more classic pieces with cleaner lines and more basic and neutral colors. But, I definitely have fantasy-inspired leanings from when I was younger that I still revisit every once in a while. Tomorrow, I have plans to pull out a long khaki-colored linen skirt that I've had for 10+ years. My mother lent it to be a few times, and one day she never got it back. I love it so much! Sometimes I'll do hybrid outfits where I'll combine a couple of different styles together.

I thought I was the only one who went through phases 😂 and still does. All of my friends just wore normal stuff or whatever that was trendy, but for some reason I was never interested in those things. It's funny when we go through old photos and all my friends dress and look pretty much the same through the years, but in my case you never know what is coming next 😬 I think the funniest phase I had was when I was obsessed dressing like Bella Swan from Twilight 😂 And I wasn't even a huge fan but for some reason I just liked her style 😌

I LOVE that you are a nerd! Finally a fashion KZbinr I look up to that also wanted to look like an elf and was into Anime as a teen❤ I never knew we had so much in common and this is the first style evolution Video I can actually relate to. I always wanted to wear lolita (sweet or gothic lolita so also complete opposite styles 😂) but I was too shy to wear it out and was still trying really hard to fit in (which didn't work at all so why even try) so I would only wear stuff like that to anime Conventions and tried to make it look casual at school. In my town in Germany everyone only wears Jean's and tshirts and all the girls in my school were only shopping at h&m so they literally had the same clothes

I think it's so interesting to see how similar your style evolution is to mine. I went through the lacy goth phase, lolita and japanese inspired phase, even the giving up and wearing basic fast fashion phase too. Now I'm most inspired by vintage (especally 60s to 70s) and historic fashion aswell. Maybe that will change again soon 😅

Maybe something racist. Because a dirndl is a traditional clothing in Austria and Germany. I think that some people found it unsuitable.

I googled out of curiosity and it seems like there's no inherent negative association (other than for a couple decades post WWII due to all things German becoming rather taboo for obvious reasons). It seems likely it was something like--wearing any over the top fashion might garner some unpleasant encounters. Possibly there's more specific stuff for her in particular but since she didn't elaborate, this is my best guess. =)

@@Chiisana100 I don't think it was that, people in the Netherlands (and Austria or Germany) do wear them on costume parties or to celebrate oktoberfest :) I think it was just because people thought it was funny.

I mentally went through those phases (lot's of fantasy stuff, gothic, a bit metal, I really wanted to go to Elf Fantasy Fair and Keltfest and all the other festivals)... but I didn't really know how to express that, nor did I had the money, so I just dove into my books, and mostly wore tomboyish clothes, nothing really of a shape or form. Now I'm a bit older (almost 29) I'm finally getting a bit of a grip of what I like and try out, and this year I FINALLY went to Keltfest for the first time, and I'm getting more and more into the medieval and fantasy type of clothes. Also I start to like more old fashioned clothes, but that's also for a part a reaction that I just dislike the flimsy and thin material of clothes today, and I love just really good clothes for a few decades ago that are still good, and are made to wear for half a lifetime. Also got a lot more into costumes. I love your style, and how you find things that suit you.

I had similar phases in high school too! I think it's pretty cool that we had the chance to wear what we wanted in school, as opposed to a uniform. 2006 and 2007 were really weird years for fashion it seemed. I had a emo/raver phase and was inspired by J-Fashion, gothic lolita like FRUiTS as well.

I'm 30 now and still love LOTR, but when I first got into it in my teens, my mom was very religious and intolerant of pretty much everything. My fantasy clothing phase was "hidden" in Galadriel/Arwen inspired braids and cheap rings that reminded me of LOTR rings. I was also big into Evanescence and Avril Lavigne. My goth stage was also very failed because I couldn't create much with old granny style hand me down floral and denim skirts. I do not miss my child/teenagerhood. HAHA!
