I absolutely love your videos. Coltrane was my introduction to jazz as well and I was obsessed too. Just something about him pushed all the right buttons for me. Not his best but one I continually go back to over and over is Coltrane with Johnny Hartman. It is so soothing and relaxing I couldn't imagine a world without it. I love it so much the first dance song at my wedding was "My One and Only Love" off of it.

John Coltrane actually renewed my friendship with one guy that I had not talked to for a few years. Shortly before his birthday, we started talking again and I decided to give him A Love Supreme as a gift. He was shocked, because he definitely did not expect a present of any kind and he received this. I don't think he enjoyed it very much though, because he borrowed me his copy a few weeks later without me even asking. Anyway, we still talk to this very day and I think that Coltrane had a reasonable part in glueing our friendship back together. Congratulations on the 1000 subs! Love that there are more and more new jazz oriented channels popping up on KZbin. Greetings from Lithuania!

As an older long time music nut, I used to work in the music biz, the best times were talking about great music to all different kinds of people, old and young! Your enthusiasm is contagious! It's great to see. I used buy up every Coltrane cd release from Japan, every scrap I could find. Music is the only religion I ascribe to and Coltrane is a high priest! Congratulations on hitting 1K subs so quickly! I am impressed, it took me a looooong time to reach 1K. I'm a huge Coltrane fan as well, but your Coltrane collection is probably larger than my entire jazz collection! I agree that Live at the Village Gate is a poor recording (I think the pressing is OK, it's the recording itself that fails). I posted a humble video as part of my Jazz Monday series focused on the Coltrane in my collection. There are three of you young men whose excitement and passion regarding jazz was a primary inspiration to launch my Jazz Monday series. My knowledge, when compared with the three of you, of jazz is infinitesimal and quite superficial. But I love the music and like most of us who make these channels I love talking about it. Throw my name in the hat for the CD and again, congrats! Carry on! BTW, Soul Trane is my favorite.

I was number 999! It caught my eye when I subscribed. I’ve enjoyed my lifetime of music, but only recently have dived into jazz music. A Coltrane tune I’m absolutely loving is “I Never Knew” played by Coltrane and Kenny Burrell. My son is a huge jazz aficionado and hadn’t heard it before. It would be cool if it is a new one for you too, but I kinda doubt it. :) Thanks for sharing your passion for jazz music!

Appreciate the support! I always tell people it’s never to late to get into jazz, such a honeyhole of great recordings and stories, it’s a genre and hobby I’ve been so grateful to discover in my late teens. I Never Knew is awesome! Probably my second favorite off the album but my first would have to be Why Was I Born? A perfect ballad, one that blends Coltranes sax and Kenny’s Guitar beautifully. That’s awesome that your sons into jazz as well! I’m on the complete opposite end, my father isn’t into jazz music as much as I try to get him into it, ironically he does listen to it a lot though when I play my records, maybe that’s why he doesn’t like it, because he hears it all the time😂

Thank you so much! You were one of the ones I watched in the beginning and gave me courage to start my own channel! Glad to finally find someone who likes interstellar space! Everyone I’ve played it for or recommended it hates it but I’ve always been into it, at least enough to double up copies😂 I play it so often it’s almost interchangeable with Stellar Regions, I think Coltrane and Ali do a phenomenal job as a duo, truly a unique release, hoping they release some of the unissued tracks for that group I know they’d be killer!

Congrats on 1k subscribers!🎉 One thing I love about Coltrane is that he is a musician who was also in Recovery. Early in his career like so many of the other greats he struggled with substance abuse. Coltrane got clean and continued to release amazing music for the rest of his life. Inspirational ❤ favorite song depends on the mood :-) keep up the great content. Ps hate those overprices on eBay/discogs.

Thanks Chris! One thing I’ll never get over is how great those his works were pre 58’, some of his greatest recordings were during his addiction to heroin, almost makes you think if it was holding him back from reaching his peak. Glad he kicked it though, not many of his idols could.

Thanks! Om is so overlooked, I think most people don’t get it and I didn’t necessarily at first either but man the backing group for that session was so diverse and weird, Joe Brazil one of Coltranes friends from the late 50s that used to host basement jams was on flute. Coltrane never intended to release Om but rather try something new on his own accord just for experimentation but damn did it work although I’m sure it’s definitely not for everybody😂

Ryan , you’re a true fan. Here in New Zealand it’s a bit difficult to get vinyl Coltrane recordings so all my purchases to date have been cds. Just this last week I’ve bought 2 four classic album sets on the AMD label which gives me 8 cds which I’ve yet to play! I also bought John Coltrane The Story on deja vu which has lots of live stuff including Love Supreme recorded in Europe in 1965 which I think is the fabled Antibe version. I have the Village Gate record you mentioned plus the Seattle live Supreme (among others) but I’ve still got a long way to go. keep the videos comin🤓

Plenty of new Coltrane reissues on vinyl in NZ. Southbound have 31 titles, Real Groovy lists 120. 😂

As always, nice to listen to a passionate guy talking about his connections and the stories behind the whys and wherefores! And secondly, I totally agree with your Number 1! The only exception is the favorite song: Mine is Alabama! Other favorite songs would be Spiral, Naima, So what, I’m Old Fashioned, Traneing In, SlowDance (the last two also because of the nice bass solos)... I also love Giant Steps. To be honest, it's hard to decide whether this or that... I just like his style of playing without any musical knowledge, from the perspective of a listener...

Wow! Amazing selection of favorites especially Slow Dance, definitely an underrated pick! Thanks for the kind words as well, they’re greatly appreciated! Also I totally understand what you mean about listening without musical knowledge, I grew up playing a few instruments like trumpet and drums but never really got a grasp on theory and reading and writing. I had a good talk with a great friend of my whose a huge Coltrane historian and an accomplished tenor saxophonist and he mentioned to me how sometimes he misses what Coltrane use to feel like to him without the musical knowledge and after I heard that I figured I didn’t wanna change wear I stand😂 I enjoy listening without analyzation and dissecting different parts of the music.

I like Coltrane with Miles and some of his early work on albums under his own name, but not so much the later stuff. The only jazz guy who went into the free realm and stayed coherent, to my mind, is Eric Dolphy-but we all have opinions and it’s all about enjoying something other than what the “entertainment” conglomerates are pushing. Happy collecting!

Coltrane and Dolphy definitely soared during 61-63, something tells me that if it weren’t for either of their untimely swathes that jazz would be in a totally different place right now. Coltrane was certainly experimenting with many of the free jazz ideas especially the ones originating from Albert Ayler, I once heard in an interview that Eric and John told him to keep on doing what he was doing even if the crowds didn’t like it and then he ended up going overseas like Dolphy did. What are your thoughts on musicians like Ayler or Cecil Taylor?

Ill go further and mention my favorite trane records I've been really digging into, Coltrane(prestige) Ole (Atlantic, has dolphy so it explains itself) Coltrane quartet plays been the one for me lately (impulse) Cannonball quartet live in Chicago (doesn't really count as a Coltrane album but he is playing here like a mf!) You’re in it I don’t mind at all! 7105 definitely deserves more love, I think most people get sidetracked with Coltranes other great albums during the impulse era and lose sight of just how great he was has a leader and writer in the early days. Coltrane was a late bloomer in terms of joining the pack but man did he come in with a bang with those prestige titles, when he reached Atlantic I’m sure people were foaming at the mouth for more especially after My Favorite Things went crazy on the radio. Super glad to have met you, besides Donovan I’d say I probably talk to you and Brian the most but I think it’d be cool to get some content out with all of us. Me and Donovan have been trying to record more podcasts with guests but our schedules aren’t meshing since college and work plus the different time zones which is probably the worst part😂

You're one of the few jazz-centric guys I'm always excited to watch and get insights from each time. (I probably am the only one here in the Philippines keeping close watch of your videos. Lol!) I love Coltrane and my top two are his Live in Birdland album and his 1962 "Coltrane" album. Coltrane's work is all purposeful noise and he was always at his best during live performances (you can definitely sense that he was always in a state of flow each time). Thank you so so much! I remember seeing your comments on my first few videos, crazy to think it’s been almost two years ago now since my first upload! Glad Birdland is your number #1😂 and I have to say the classic quartet “Coltrane” almost made the list if I had some more thought but for some reason I overlook it in my collection maybe because I have a reissue of it rather than an early pressing but I love all those tracks on there especially Mal Waldrons composition Soul Eyes he wrote for Coltrane during the prestige days! The deluxe CD has some missing alternate takes not included on any of the impulse boxsets but there’s still a few left out such as a take of Up Gainst the wall from the same session, fingers crossed we get it and many other unissued takes for the Coltrane centennial🤞

My favourite Coltrane is Live in Japan, a.k.a. Concert in Japan. It's a pity tracks had to be split on vinyl but the 4 x CD release is also really nice.

I wish they just replicated the Japan boxset release for the US pressings instead of leaving out Leo, I totally get why but come on give us the entire set😂 I had to grab the 4CD set to complete everything though since I had the US press, wishing I would’ve just grabbed the CD or boxset from the beginning though!

It’s a shame, I think I’ve only found a few in my area as well but they’re usually beat to crap sadly. Also that Walmart reissue is killer! Awesome and underrated choice! Have you heard Ascension live with Archie Shepp? That recording really got me into Ascension, there was so much going on during that date that Coltrane couldn’t even recall who was in the lineup during an interview I once heard but I think all the noise let’s you hear it differently each time, let’s you focus on different players and how they respond to each other. Such an exciting experience, wish I could experience it for the first time again.
