Just got Mushrooms & Toadstools by Edmund Garnweidner Collins nature guides- why are there mushrooms that are listed as poisonous?!! Like chicken of the woods is clearly edible, but has the skull symbol in this book What the hell

I agree with your choices but would obviously include my book, The Pocket Foraging Guide! Thanks for the honourable mention, Eric, Wild Food UK.

Excellent! Thank you Paul for this as I love mushroom identification if I find one. I have a Collins book and RC book but I love the bible one and also the Fungarium looked a great one to get.

Do you rate the 'picture mushroom' app. We have fun with that on family walks, but not sure how much to trust its AI skills!

Great books good advice Ray Mears advice is just learn 5 edibles ...learn one at a time ... Know all the mimics ... But aside from edible it's also great to ID then. It's a big thing in Russia to collect n.ID fungi ..

I have the Wild Food UK pocket book and it's a solid foraging book with lots of edible plants too. Needs cross-referencing though - I've nearly been caught out a couple of times where it listed some toxic lookalikes but not all of them, but the way it's worded sounds like it is all of them. Or when it has entries for edibles but doesn't have some very common inedible (non-toxic) lookalikes (they are on the website but not in the book). It does a great job of explaining how to get into foraging and be able to ID some of the low-risk groups that are suitable for beginners though.

Top notch youth. Got Roger Philips' book (and me Aclima pulse heaters - read: perfect pickin mits, as noted by yersel) for Crimbo and while I'm by no means an expert, the photos in Roger's book are by far the most useful thing to help an amateur along that I've seen so far. It can mean going out and collecting single specimens to come back look up, take spore prints etc. but it's a much more informative way to begin your foray into fungi than pickin' and hopin' if something isn't screamingly obvious ☠️

I know you gave a big shout out to "Wild Food UK" but I got their foraging pocket guide for chrimbo and it's a perfect size to have on you but importantly, the photos of the shrooms are of all the growth states so it gives you a better chance to identify something! Happy New Year and keep 'em coming 😎
