Katie, I am in Swaledale right now with my husband, we came down from Scotland a few days ago. Basically we are here because of you! You inspired me to come here bring the bikes get out and it’s been absolutely fantastic, just like you, I love the hills, climbing, rock, sheep et cetera! Not only have you inspired me to come here over the last couple of months since I discovered you I have acquired some bags for my frame and also on Vinted I managed to get the Patagonia lightweight puffer jacket (I got a good deal on a bright yellow one, which I love for high visibility). I absolutely love that jacket. It’s everything that you said it is! Your inspiration has been a big deal for me because I’m in my 50s and I’m coming out of a very long bad patch with health, and haven’t cycled regularly for many years. Thank you so much Katie!!! 😃🤗

the satisfaction of bike commuting to work even in snow/ice. your studded winter tires doing their job. your clothes/thermal layers doing their job. a somewhat warm shower when you arrive at work. it is something. anyone can ride when it is sunny and warm. but it is a special feeling when you take your Lady (bike) out when it is freezing cold, snow/ice. and you take that ride together in the darkness. yassss
@KatieKookaburra2 ай бұрын
But I think too many people go out in ice/snow without the right kit and come off :( I def wouldn't recommend unless you have those tyres or are mega expert at handling in all conditions.
@JK-dv3qe2 ай бұрын
@@KatieKookaburra very very true, you should def respect the conditions and the potentials! but when you arrive safe and sound (after being careful/sensible) -> the satisfaction is something else. you maybe were slow. but you got there. it is kinda cool

Yes definitely. There’s nothing satisfying about a smashed up hip or worse because of snow and ice and you’re sitting in A&E for hours waiting on an X-ray. I’m on my Wahoo Kickr Shift bike. I’ve suffered enough trying to make winter work in Ireland. ❄️🇮🇪

The dressing up in extra layers, the first cold damp miles, the drizzle & headwind, the road spray from the rider with no mudguards, the filthy bike at the end, the pile of dirty clothes to wash, the hot aches as body parts thaw….. With all these reasons against, why is winter riding so satisfying? There is something wonderful about a winter club run with a cafe stop once the weather gets harsh. A seriously British bit of cycling stoicism. Love it……especially those special dry, icy days with low sunshine. Great advice Katie👍

I live very near 2 country parks, which are regular cycling routes for me, but in winter are also good for hiking as the paths are in the trees and also the wind doesn't feel as strong at walking speeds. Plus a lot of hiking routes are (IMO) better done in Autumn or Winter as you can see more when the trees are bare. My biggest revelation this year has been toe covers, struggled really badly with cold feet last year.

Hi Katie, living in Northern Ireland as I do my favourite place to go to is the Mourne Mountains as it reminds me of the route you were on in this video even though I've never been in the Yorkshire Dales. The Mournes are about 25 miles from where I live but I love going there and like you I do say hi to the animals I encounter on my way past. I know what you mean about putting sun glasses on and then realising it's not as dark when you take them off, I've a slightly cheaper way of doing it in so far as I have a clear set of decathlon glasses and sunglasses and I just carry both with me on winter rides. One thing I do want to get is warmer cycling trousers for the winter as the pairs I have are definitely not so good when the temperatures drop. I also am guilty of not drinking enough when it's cold outside and tho' I don't have a Garmin computer on my bike its just something I'll have to remember to do.

I keep a Sea to Summit Ultra Sil travel compressed daypack with me in my front bag. That way, if I have to start removing layers on a ride that starts cold and ends warm, I just open that up, put it on my back and put any of my discarded clothing in it. It compresses into something the size of a baseball, weighing about 2.5 oz. Best part of winter riding is the hot cup of coffee afterwards. Definitely make a hot beverage to look forward to part of your winter routine. :)

Katie, I grew up in Essex, north of London and have lived in Montreal & now Toronto most of my life. I suggest you fly to Clermont, Florida for the winter and enjoy rolling hills as I do post retirement. I drive down and rent for Jan, Feb and Mar. Central Florida is hilly, warm and green. Yes, hilly. I have 100 km rides with 800+ m of climbing. I love my bike as much as you and I ain't stopping what I love and can still do at age 80. I will be in Mallorca next Sept 25 with a group of 50 cycling friends. BTW I met two chaps from Manchester last year that spend cycling time each winter in this area of Florida. You can, also. hook up with the Florida Freewheelers, a local bike club.

The climb up the mountain is 32km and just under 1100m altitude average 5% climb. The road is tarmac and goes up through a jungle around 17km marker the jungle thins out a lot. I am not fast and the ride from my room to the top usually takes me 3 hours...1.5 hours to get back...about 10km on the main road before the national park. It is still the rainy season here but bright blue skies...for now...and a cool 26C at 7.30am
