@@anjaananjaan5107 yeah...its not as black and white as that im afraid... when you are gripped by automatic anxiety (amygdala originating one), you cant pep talk yourself out of the horrid feelings and lack of control... we have to train ourselves to notice when we start feeling tight chest or heart pounding, then take deep breaths and tell our mind we are safe and that there is no real threat and its only a symptom... and then best to take ourselves away from the situation and do one or all of the techniques mentioned here or what works for individual. Ive recently discovered TAPPING and seems to have some effect.

I've had two major depressive episodes the longest lasting nine months following the ending of my marriage just over 10 years ago. These last 4 days I fell into a depressive bout. Yesterday my anxiety and ruminating and overall depression led me to suicidal thoughts that I hadn't had in years. Slowly climbing out but will take time. Your videos are very helpful. Great advice Douglas, thank you! I also find that owning a pet really helps (most likely a cat or dog, so that you can get a reassuring hug any time you are at home alone). I own a cat and she makes me feel like I am never alone, and she follows me wherever I am. A cat's purr has got to be the most soothing sound in the world to help you calm down and fall asleep at night (especially when they curl up to you). Owning a cat doesn't take away all of my anxiety and depression, but I would say that it helps me by at least 50%. It's like having a little buddy that you can throw birthday parties for and celebrate holidays with! I highly recommend it for anyone who is willing to take care of an animal. 🙂

A small part of a much larger story but it always activated in situations that might’ve served to make me happy: interviews, dates, meeting new people etc. As my happiness was considered a no-no by Simon it always activated thus sabotaging me. Breathing exercises can't get me out of panic attacks. Only a hard run and medication. Yes benzos are habit forming but I'd rather be dependent on benzos and still alive. Going cold through a panic attack is not pretty. Also make sure you are eating properly. Anxiety can strip you of your appetite and sometimes you will need to force yourself to eat. Anxiety loves an empty stomach. Don't stay home alone. Your mind will only amplify your anxiety. I couldn't do massage because closing my eyes on the massage table just got me stuck inside my own head for an hour and I would get very unsettled. Thanks Doug for your channel.

I have heard that rapid shallow breathing causes TOO MUCH oxygen in the bloodstream. That is perhaps why one is advised to breathe into a paper bag, to get the CO2 level in the blood higher (not oxygen), to combat anxiety attacks. Slow exhalation and then pausing is the equivalent. That too raises CO2 in the blood. Love your videos.

I've been suffering on and off with various degrees for years - I'm going through a particularly bad bout, which is very very hard. I'm on beta blockers, mirtazapine and diazepam (UK names) Some of them have ceased to have an effect. I've recently started exercise with long walks outside but somehow the anxiety has crept into that which has really upset me. I'm trying my best and CDB oil is the next thing for me to try. To anyone else suffering, I'd highly recommend watching sitcoms and/or anything else that makes you feel nice. It works. Also, to reiterate what Douglas and others have said across these videos is that the panic/anxiety is always temporary and is not a permanent state. On many occasions I've slingshotted from a 'spike' straight into a period of high productivity and renewed determination. I'm hoping for my next one soon.

Thank you Douglas. I wish there was a magic elixir but the best thing I've found (alongside really helpful videos like yours and many others) is that far more people suffer than don't suffer, and while that isn't good that anybody is struggling, sharing and helping each other through hard times helps. And currently I'm binge watching Friends and that's helping me too, Frasier, Cheers, MASH, and the British comedy Are You Being Served? It helps me. I hope I can help at least one other person with my recommendation.

Victoria, I am sorry that you are struggling. Here is a video I did on reducing anxiety that I think will be helpful. kzbin.info?o=U&video_id=ESL2xeH5Ol4 In addition, if you go to my home page, you will see that the fourth playlist down is dedicated to videos on worry and anxiety. Good luck! kzbin.info

You didn't talk about facing your fears?! That has been my biggest source of overcoming my anxiety.
@DouglasBloch5 жыл бұрын
You are correct. That is an important part of overcoming anxiety, especially in social anxiety when people need to go into social situations even when they feel uncomfortable

Driving, especially in new places, or if I haven't got much sleep, (I have insomnia) is a huge source of anxiety for me. I can worry so much about it that I dont sleep. Smh, it's a vicious cycle.

Love you Doug, I'm starting school in January 14th in a field i have never done, ac and refrigeration but i am ruminating about the daily trip there 38 mins each way. and I will be in a night class 4-10pm when my family is home. then they are gone during the day kids at school and wife is a teacher. How can i mentally get ready for going? plus I'm missing my right hand, seems I love stacking the deck against myself huh? " Until we meet again my Friend big hug and God grant you deep rooted peace and joy in the wonderful mosaic you have become from the broken pieces.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a friend who became trained in AC and refrigeration, and it has gone well. Tell yourself you can handle it

Do you/can you have a video on sleep performance anxiety? Meaning, bedtime anxiety that includes obsessive thinking, intrusive fearful thoughts that cause insomnia?
@DouglasBloch5 жыл бұрын
I do have videos on those subjects. One is called how to get free of OCD any other is called how to respond to obsessive and intrusive thoughts.

thanks for this video, very helpful tips. do you have any videos or recommendations on how to heal toxic shame? Before starting to go to psychotherapist I even haven't realized how huge the toxic shame in my life, and I think this is one of the biggest source of my depression (
@DouglasBloch7 жыл бұрын
John Bradshaw wrote a great book on the subject called "Healing the Shame that Binds You." See if you can get it from the library or Amazon. Search KZbin to see if he made any videos on the subject. Otherwise put "toxic shame" in the KZbin search. According to Bradshaw, guilt says, "I made a mistake," while toxic shames says, "I am a mistake." I like that comparison.

I've tried the square breathing , I learned it when I was 18 when I had a massive panic attack. when I get them, my hands will either curl in or out and I get numb in my mouth and lips. it got so bad that I couldn't do anything but breath.. the technique helps.
