Just to be really clear -- I'm not saying that all instances of obesity are triggered by an emotional or traumatic event. Very often it is physiological. Sometimes it's a combination. Sometimes, folks just really love food -- and that's made all the worse by the Standard American Diet. There are lots of reasons. For me, however, there were certain events in my life that -- as I reflect upon them -- led to a pattern of eating behavior that caused me to be overweight and obese. I believed that to transform myself, I had to do more than just the dietary aspect; I had to own my past.

Certainly no one thinks you the "keto anti-Christ" 😂 Everyone made it to their Keto place pretty much the same way by tying on the feedbag. We don't wake as skinny person and start keto...

It's not weird...unless you were pulling an American Pie moment...lol. But food for an adolescent becomes a friend. It's always there. It never lets you down until it makes you fat. You spent hours alone and it was comfort and the thing you could count on. We get it..trust me. And you weren't the only member of the clean plater club. 😕

My mom said I got extremely I'll, would not eat, almost to point of starving, but then woke up and started eating and never stopped. I am only 5'2 tall, since 13 (?), and I was over 200 lb by the time I was 10 years old. I know I was over 280 by age 15. I ended up and a rehab center because back then type 2 diabetes at that age was considered disability. Because I went to a doctor, psychiatrist, he put me on the strongest diet pill that was out there. So back in the 70s (1975/1976) they handled emotional problems connected to weight this way. But I'm not complaining. He saved my life. I learned to eat properly because I was never hungry, no appetite. I got down to 170 lb. And I stayed between 180 and 200 for the most part how's the next 30 Years. Between 2000 and 2009 I gained a hundred lb. I have struggled over the last 10 years to lose that weight. I went off of all insulin for six months to lose 40 pounds in 2016. Today I am 173, a week ago I was down to 169. I really struggle with this because I don't think I eat a lot and I tried to eat very healthy the salads and Keto. I wish I could get to one city, better yet 140 but I have never been that low in weight my entire life.

I don't think your saying anything most of us already know/feel. My mother was not satisfied with me from the minute I was born, she wanted a brown eyed blonde, I have the brown eyes but my hair is dark. She wanted a boy I'm female, I have never been able to figure out why if you said something like my mother did why did she have to tell me ? When I was born she told her mother " oh mama she's so ugly"! My whole life she would tell me she loved me but didn't like me, or that I would never amount to a hill of beans, or your so lazy you stink. Nothing I did was right. When I was married and pregnant for the first time I found that I was pregnant with twins and she told me "you can't even have a baby like everyone else you have to have two" again I couldn't win. At one time I weighed 535 lbs I'm six feet tall. I'm not saying it's all her fault I'm just saying sometimes it's really hard to crawl out of the hole your in. I've had weight loss surgery and got way down but it began to creep up again. And I find myself trying again. I appreciate you doing this KZbin channel for a lot of reasons. Thank you very much.

Watching from Scotland as we have subscribed to various keto recipes, gurus, interested parties etc and came across you. My husband also worked for GE in Scotland for 35 years, taking early retirement 5 years ago and his weight increased during this time , even more so during this pandemic. Lots of what you said resonated with us and we've changed our lifestyle to keto early January and can't see us going back. The difference in health, attitude as well as weight loss has been an eye opener and sharing ideas, recipes video blogs (like yours) has inspired some of my friends who are following us and losing weight too. I don't think I was obese but 14 pounds over my desired weight and hid it because I am tall. Your life story is inspiring to ordinary people and love your honesty. Weve yoyo'd on calories controlled diets for years, giving up because of hunger pangs. I am astonished how I'm enjoying this new life style and feeling good. Im surprised GE let you go as you come across as an excellent orator and easy to listen to. it's their loss. You are an inspiration. By the way, your white shirt is too big for you lol...xx

Oh my! So far I am a female version of you. Add in more versions of ever diet under the sun and minus the HCG. Listening so far is a mix of wanting to laugh or cry. Unfortunately my weight bar was much higher than yours. I lost 75 pounds on Atkins and a very emotional journey set me back. I gained all that back plus another 30. This year has been *rough*. But I got mental health help and went to keto and since September I am down over 30 pounds. I have a *long* way to go. But I won’t quit. I may get setbacks. But I am fighting for me.

Steve I’m the child of two narcissists. I learned to be codependent (wanting to please my parents hoping for their unconditional love in return) at an early age. I couldn’t understand why I did everything for them in my power and still they didn’t really care. I finally went to a therapist in my 30s. It was one of the best decisions I ever made. I encourage you to look into that. It changed my thinking, was empowering and it stopped the little girl inside me looking for parental love....it helped realize she was fine and could move forward. When I was 12 my dad used to tell me I was fat. When I was 13, my weight shifted and I developed quickly. So quickly that he told me I’d be pregnant by the time I was 15. And no I didn’t get pregnant, until my 20s. Hell, I didn’t even know how to get pregnant until I was taught in school at age 15! Eating / dieting has been an emotional journey for me also. I think it has been for anyone suffering childhood trauma associated with it. You are so encouraging. Blessings and much love to you!

Steve, I know I'm kind of spilling my guts here, but your post has inspired me to open up in ways I normally would not do in a forum like this. I am 57 years old now and weigh over 300 pounds, at 5 foot 8 inches tall (technically obese). As a child, I was told to eat everything on my plate. My mother gave me the "there are children starving in China" speech. My thought was, "Well, send what I don't eat to them.", but I never said that out loud. I'm not an emotional eater, when I'm emotional I tend NOT to eat. My parents were polar opposites emotionally. Dad was kind of aloof, "don't say anything" kind of guy. Mom was doting and wore "rose-colored glasses" (my brothers and I could do no wrong). As far as "cleaning the plate" goes, I always got a "good boy" or "good job", whenever I ate everything on my plate. Even though they (my parents) stayed together for 43 years and are both gone now, I often feel guilty if I don't eat everything presented to me. After leaving my parents I had several relationships with women who were great cooks. Needless to say, I packed on a lot of pounds over the years. Currently, I am trying a keto diet with alternate fasting days. So far so good. I am in the early days, so I don't have any weight loss figures for you. However, I am hopeful for the future thanks to your inspiration! May God bless you, Steve!

Thank you again for your integrity of openness. One of your comments was about "owning your past". That is SUCH an effective doorway to healing for people with all sorts of substance/food/risky activity abuse propensities. You see, what you've done is put into plain language what we lecture, seminar and workshop frantically in progressive early care and education (and other disciplines that touch families). Early childhood experiences are a KEY indicator of how a person may turn to food and other substances as a result of traumas and early challenges. These things ARE connected. It is SO common that when we pair those experiences with what we now KNOW about brain development we can see a very clear, familiar, and frighteningly common composite of how we may end up as adults consistently fighting the trauma of past experiences with over indulgences. You are making a clarion call to us to take courage and face our memories. By doing that we can put them in their proper places in our lives and get back control! For a deeper look into this folks can check out the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (or ACE Study) easily Googled. Thanks again Steve, I'm sharing, and waiting with anticipation for next week!

@johnrain70355 жыл бұрын
The “non-scientific” association with Keto (simply real food) is a spin propagated by a very nefarious group to keep you on the poison of the processed food diet - the dietary guidelines DO NOT have any scientific foundation what so ever, and contravened known medical evidence of the 1950’s. Unfortunately we are all being conned in so many ways that effectively nothing is what it appears to be, and certainly nothing that main stream says. All the best.

Found out in September that I’m type 2 after going to the hospital with a blood sugar level of 688. I’m 59 years old and I’ve never had and will never have a kitchen table. Worst part of every day growing up was when all focus was on me at the dinner table. I also had to finish every bite and often sat there till bed time, especially on cow tongue or fish stick night, which was fine after the folks went away to watch tv and were done verbally abusing me for the evening. My blood level is now 70 to 120 like it should be and I’ve lost 35 pounds in the 3 months since. Glad I found your channel, it helps

Many adult children of alcoholics have used food as a way to cope with feelings that were not safe to share and survival mode kicks in...food use for all kinds of emotions happy, sad, lonely, angry....para-alcoholic behaviour which is not unusual at all. Dang, a cliff hanger. Thank you for your openness, I do appreciate it. I didn't have any one thing cause my overeating. I gained weight every time I was pregnant and then had to lose that weight, but never got back down to my regular size because of being busy taking care of the family. Then when the kids got older I discovered I loved to make bread and bake. Weight increased and I just didn't care to try to lose it because I would fill deprived of good tasting food. Then My daughter told me she was going to try Keto. I didn't know what that was and we started watching all the Keto Doctors etc. and my husband and I started our journey. We love this way of life, we never crave anything, and fill better than we have in a very long time. Can't Wait for your next episode. /Kathy

Hi Steve, Over the course of my life I have been a yoyo dieter. Did them all WW, J. Craig etc and at one point tried Atkins but got what is now called the Keto Flu really bad and had to stop (didn't know at the time what caused it, now I do). I gained and lost a significant amount of weight much the same way you did, by setting the bar. I don't reflect. What is in the past is in the past. Reflection doesn't get me anywhere. My biggest problem when I dieted was I WAS HUNGRY! When I wasn't dieting and knew that I needed to lose weight, I couldn't get my head in the game, so to speak. The one thing I did determine is; I am addicted to carbs and mostly sugar! Sugar is my trigger to eat. And, I love to eat! Finally, I got my head in the game and decided to give Keto a try. I'm so glad I did. I love the Keto way of life. I love the food I am eating and I AM NOT HUNGRY! This is it! I have finally found an eating lifestyle that I absolutely love and plan on eating Keto til death do us part. So far I have lost 23 lbs in 5 months. And the Keto lifestyle has brought me to you. I really enjoy watching your podcasts. Keep up the great work!

I chuckle now thinking of the Atkins days I endured back in 2001, trying to get ready for my wedding day. Sweet treats were only cream cheese with some heavy cream and a splenda packet or SF Jello. We had no clue about electrolytes, so keto-flu was usually the end all. So thankful doctors and others didn't give up on pushing through to learn about low-carb and the benefits. Now we have so many options and knowledge of how to be creative with our foods. Thank YOU!

Thank you so much for opening up. I know the trauma that has caused my anxiety, and as a result, obesity. It's kinda funny....my mom is always saying "you used to could just lose weight whenever you wanted". Yeah, because nicotine, caffeine, and alcohol were my main food groups. I have given up everything (except caffeine and you'll have to pry that one from my cold, dead hand") so that leaves eating to sooth my anxiety. I also boredom eat. So, I am realizing all I have been doing for years is trade one soother for another...and you can't totally give up eating. So thanks for the recipes and your story. I'm a long way from where I want to be, but Keto is going to be the lifestyle that works. for me.

I have been on so many different diets too and regained after they were over. I am 63 and decided to sit down and have a talk with God. I lost my late husband a while back and all my children are grown and gone. I asked God for a good reason to even lose weight. I was tired of just sitting around. I had no energy still feeling sorry for myself. I had been watching KZbin an d saw this keto diet and I had been watching tutorials and reading recipes. To make a long story shorter I am on my third month and have lost 29 pounds. I am at a stand still but I am loving this new way of eating. I am not even calling it a diet. I cleaned out my cupboards of food I won't use. I no longer just sit still. I already have lots more energy and feel better about myself and yet I still have lots more weight to take off. Thank you for sharing your story and recipes. You are doing so good and I bet your family is so proud of you. We all have things we go through but I have Jesus to talk to and help me get through this.

I'm just getting into this one but needed to comment. First I'm so glad you came to the conclusion that being heavy does steam from a root cause. I will say for me I have found many who have been abused become very heavy after. My thought on this one is sexual abuse. A friend of mine was always thin until at 7 years old she was abused and that started the chain reaction. But the most comment to me is emotional abuse or the lacking of something. For me I felt very very unloved as a child and would find myself going in the middle of the night to eat yet I wasn't even hungry. It became a comfort to me.

I was so impressed as a kid by how my father cleaned his plate and mopped up all the excess sauce with a few slices of bread, I swear he could have put the plate back in the cupboard, it was spotless. Fast forward many years, he died of a heart attack at 48, I followed in his footsteps and hit 240ish in Oct '19. Started healthy keto and IF and am down to 203. It's on! I'm never going back to fatboy town. Thanks for your candor and heartfelt sharing of you experience with us viewers. I get crazy motivation from watching your vids, especially this series. Big ups to you and your channel!

I'm stunned at how much we have in common, from our Dad's (mine used to stuff my plate full, 1st helping) to the yo-yo. I remember when "high protein diets" and "Atkins" came out and when people talked about Keto, I didn't even want to hear it. As I started going through the internet, I was surprised at how many choices are given now! I asked God for an answer and where to start and He gave it too me!

Even though I am about twice as overweight as you, our reasoning and mindset is so close. A couple of times I was like, "Those are the exact thoughts and words I have!" I am on my journey and sometimes it is lonely. It is a good motivation and inspiration to follow in the footsteps of those ahead of me.

I struggled and still do struggle with YES it is about the trauma once experienced in my own childhood- Food some of which was forbidden from the children it was only for the adults, even though it was there in sight. Smelling the stake cooking while laying in bed after having a bowl of cereal for dinner. Having a violent father who hated having a second daughter (ME) i should have been a boy. So many emotions to EAT away as an adult eating what i couldn't have as a child. The struggle is real every day.
@SeriousKeto5 жыл бұрын
Recognizing those triggers/traumas is the first step, in my opinion. That, coupled with meditation helped. Through meditation, I became more aware of my thoughts and emotions and could look at them objectively, rather than be controlled by them. It takes a while to unlearn the behaviors that were instilled in us at a young and impressionable age.

This is hitting home with me! My dad was an alcoholic and he was either at the bar or passed out. My mom didn’t drive so the only activity she could do was feed us. It was her way of showing us love. My dad was proud that he had a good job where he could afford to keep the frig and cupboards full of good foods (junk food) because he had been raised during the depression. Eating = Love. Now I’m in a marriage with someone who is very emotionally unavailable so I turn to food as my comfort. I did pretty well at keto in the 10 months. Now it’s been almost 2 years and I’ve put 10 lbs back on. Trying to get back on track but the holidays are tough.

Watching this video had me in tears. I weigh 360 pounds at 45 and sometimes I feel like I am just waiting for the end to come. I recalled a memory from when I wa s young. I was eating dinner with my family and I hated creamed corn, when I did not eat it my dad hit me on the back of the head with a wooden spoon so hard I felt like I might pass out. I was forced to eat the corn to the point that it made me sick and I was in the bathroom vomiting. Afterwards I had to stand in the corner until I agreed to finish the corn with out getting sick. I never really thought about how my early food triggers could have effected my overall issues with food. Today is my first day of Keto. I feel like this is my last chance to gain control of my life again. I am so thankful I found this channel and I hope I can look back in a few years and have the same transformation story that you have.

I used to be a member of the clean plate club. Mom said she was raised that way because her parents lived through the depression and learned not to waste precious food. Nearly everyone in our extended family is overweight or obese. Fortunately I was never physically abused like you were. I am sorry to hear your suffering, but thank you for sharing your story. I started keto in May 2019 and moved to carnivore in July. I do intermittent fasting and some longer fasts. Currently on day 4 of a fast, this is the longest one so far. I have rediscovered satiation signals from my body. Now if there are a few bites left on my plate but I am full I STOP EATING. I have found that I get a stomach ache from overeating even just 2 bites. So now any extra meat goes to the dog. I have resolved 5 health conditions including prediabetes and am seeing improvements in 7 other conditions! I have lost 42 lbs, many more to go. One of the things I really enjoy about keto carnivore is the amazing mental clarity and improved mental/emotional health. No more brain fog! Merry Christmas, Happy holidays!

I came across your channel 2 days ago when I received the recommendation on you video trying different chaffles. From there, I decided to subscribe to your channel. I thought that this was just another Keto guide channel. I've been watching your transformation videos this morning (now one #3). Watching the first 2 videos of your journey got me to thinking about my own weight gains, weight losses, health, insecurities about my appearance and how I rarely took pictures, loss of my little brother in 2016 and questioning life itself and my Heavenly Father God. There's so much more, but I said all that to say that I was given this life as a gift and it's my responsibility to honor it. I've abused my body so much with eating carelessly that I began to suffer with my health. At 48, I have finally made the decision to get my mind and body on the right path to better health. I am blessed to have Keto and I want to thank you for opening your heart to us.

I lost 120lbs on HCG and kept it off for 7 years.. I was as slim as I was in junior high school.. but then I got married to someone who is very abusive and stressful.. over the past 7 years I’ve gained back 75lbs. I am a stress and boredom eater. I’m trying to stay on Keto, but the weight doesn’t budge.. I’m in ketosis, but I’ve only lost two lbs. in 2 weeks of being very strict. I am 58 years old, so maybe it’s my age? Thanks for your videos. They are very inspirational. And like someone else mentioned you have a great voice. You could make the big bucks if you went into radio or TV commercials.

I have my masters in health coaching from a very holistic school. I don’t agree with most dieticians except for the emotional component of obesity. It wasn’t until I truly got into my past and accepted the reasons why I eat that I was able to start losing weight. It’s very important to come to terms with emotions in order to be able to keep the weight off.

Watching your transformation videos: how you describe you is describing me. As I start 2023, I am again making a big attempt to go keto, because I have basically run out of options. You see, I am type 2 diabetic. I take 3 meds to keep blood glucose down, 3 meds for my blood pressure, a med for gout, a med for cholesterol and I have now more back issues due to my weight, which currently is 351.8. Like you, I have struggled all my life with my weight, and I eat out of boredom and also I eat because I want to please my parents. And now with just my mom alive ( my dad died in 2001 of congestive heart failure at age 60), I don’t want to go like him. I have a very high stress job and am tired, both mentally and emotionally, at end of every work day. I am trying to set myself a goal of going walking around a local school campus a minimum of 2 loops, with each loop being 1 mile. But I get so easily distracted that the new “habit” barely has a chance to stick and grow. Last January, I had an issue with cellulitis in both of my lower legs, both caused by a blood clot. My doctor told me then to get off low carb and go Mediterranean, and also added the third blood sugar med, the cholesterol med and the 2nd blood pressure med. also, my lower legs have approx 2/3 no feeling due to mismanagement of my blood glucose at the hospital I was at, where the docs refused to allow me to take my medicine and even attempted several times, but didn’t succeed, in removing the cgm I wear. So they basically let my blood glucose (bg) go up to 300, then give me an insulin shot, which knocked bg down to 45, then fed me a meal of 150 g carbs, which shot my bg back up to 300. This happened for 3 days after which I revolted and got discharged from hospital, where the doc in charge actually wanted to keep me there and do experimental surgery on my lower legs to find out why they weren’t healing. So since then, that incident is one of the emotional scars I have been dealing with in my attempts to lose weight. The other being that, I live alone and have no support for staying on keto and that everyone in my family says keto is bad and I should eat meals with 80-120 g carbs 3 times a day. Now following your posts and listening to you explain your transformation, I hope, will give me the kick I need to get going on keto once and for all and get healthier. It’s you and Nick Martinez (simple fun keto) that are giving me support for this journey I am on and I need all the help i can get. Please continue what you are doing and thanks for listening and caring. Sincerely, Dirk Baeuerle

I will say it again this week: Thank you for being so raw and real. Your experience and journey*is* different than any other person because it *is* your very own. You definitely inspire others to take their own journey. I would like to help you inspire others by saying it's ok if you don't feel like you can do or even want to do keto. Truth be told, getting of the SAD train and looking at a functional medicine diet approach will land you somewhere between Paleo and Carnivore... All of which will have you reduce starch carbs to your very own healthy level and get you off GMO harmful grains, processed food, and sugar overload! Thank you, Steve!
