My exact thought while listening to this was, oh brother, like there aren't at least a few of those? I hate cancel culture. The white man sure doesn't seem to have any protections, though. They're portrayed as all kinds of evil in many dramas, and I don't take offense, as some white men ARE evil, just like every other race.

Dramas are just that, a story, fairy-tale. It's not a documentary which tells a true story. I lived in NY during 911, the drama didn't affect me as being in bad taste as it wasn't a documentary about 911, it was a drama about 2 people in love that are separated. These dramas are fictitious,, people need to know the difference and not get upset, if they can't, than maybe don't watch them. Find other entertainment that won't upset them.

Joseon Exorcist was so good with an amazing cast. I was heartbroken that it was cancelled. As an American I couldn't understand the blowback. I knew there was cultural tension between China and Korea, but I had no idea it was sensitive enough to scrap the entire drama and not even given the chance of editing or writing out the sensitive topics. They even erased it forever. You can't find the 2 episodes that were aired.

People need to grow up! If you are offended by something in a show, don't watch it. But stop trying to prevent everyone from watching it. I am so sick of people trying to force their views on everyone else.

In the case of King the Land, the authors simply used the stereotype of an extremely rich Arab. I understand that the Arabs don't like this character, but their rich people keep getting away with crazy parties and spending money. Now Lee Junho is also becoming a victim of stereotypes. Many new foreign "Fans" immediately accuse him of plastic surgery just because he is a South Korean artist. (He has not undergone plastic surgery, all changes are only due to age and weight).

"but their rich people keep getting away with crazy parties and spending money." What is that supposed to mean? and its right for foreign fans to be angry. i am angry too. kdrama's are Korean dramas so why are they portraying arabs? why? who gave them the right?

@@Overdosed_On_Tea As a European, most of what I hear about rich Arabs is about lavish parties, prostitution and crazy spending money on all kinds of whims. This is a stereotype that those people continue to create about themselves. After all such stories, I see Prince Samir as a very sweet person and I don't like that someone hates him. I understand that Arabs don't like such a stereotype, but I don't like their hypocrisy, as if they don't have such people at all. Are Arabs the navel of the world that someone should ask permission to play them?

@@vilmamy I don't understand your and others' problem with Arabs. I would have been okay but Arabs already have so much bad representation in media. can't they have 1 good representation? Okay so to start off with.... What I'm about to say is not meant to be rude, offensive or dismiss anything anyone might be feeling on certain topics addressed in this video (to be fair it is just my general opinion as someone who reads books of many cultures and genres "even FICTION" and even shows). The thing that a lot of people seem to forget all the time when it comes to movies and books outside the world of stories, shows/movies based on real life events or even documentaries is that not EVERYTHING put on television is made from real life events and cultures. Things that have happened to people and what not. Cultures, events and aspects in the world of FICTION get thrown around all the time, it's why it's FICTION, it's not real, it's not meant to be real... So why do people always make it that way? It can be offensive but only if you're so insensitive that you see it that way.. It's a frictional piece of material written to not follow a real life story cause it's not REAL. My opinion stands that in the world of people who look at everything logically or one sided should just not watch TV unless it's the news. When watching something you have to draw a very clear line on the borders of reality and fiction.. It's why all shows and even television channels are labeled with these amazing things called genres. Most shows even tell you at the beginning "this is a frictional show where all religions, characters, cultures and events are not based on real facts. VIEWERS DISCRETION ADVISED" it might use real names and events but it's not following the real events for a reason.. A good example of this (The King: Eternal Monarch) it uses both real life historical events and even names but tells them two VERY different ways (haven't seen the show, highly recommend it. It was very good). My point here is this... A show gets cancelled cause someone finds something to be offended about knowing very well there are watching a show that is meant to be 100% fake, not real FICTIONAL and then everyone else who might enjoy the story than has to suffer cause someone couldn't leave reality out of fictional content. Even more so someone who was hired to act the role out and the production has to apologize.. For what? Someone who does not know fact from fiction... I fail to see how that is fair..

Something is going to offend someone somehow. If you worry that something is going to offend, it restricts creativity. In America, we have such a huge issue with a small minority of people being offended by so many things or being offended for other people that it's become annoying. It's impacting what is coming out in movies and TV, and it's really showing in how little money movies are making. Personally, I watch very little American movies or TV because of this. For a good few years now, Kdramas probably are 90-95% of what I watch. I just don't like having shows remade with characters changed to be politically correct or updated instead of bringing in an original story or a character that already existed that could be brought into the story. With the hours I work, 12 hour nights, my time off, I want to relax and get out of reality. I don't want to watch something that forces me to deal with everyday politics.

Not necessarily true… but for K Dramas, most complaints are done during the show being filmed or earlier… usually by the time international audiences get the show, it’s been out for a while. @@albo3323 I believe that you are being disingenuous with your comment. Show me where EVERY person of a Culture, Country, Group are ALWAYS shown in one way. The thing is, many stereotypes are based on some truths… granted not everyone is going to fit into any of all stereotypes… As an example, I have mostly Italian heritage, what pops into your mind when you think of Italians… give me your top five. For the vast majority of people around the world, most of their top five are some kind of stereotype. If someone says that they live in Texas… Alaska… Japan… southern part of the USA. We all have our own images that pop into our head. Now I do agree that being hateful or disrespectful towards anyone or any group is wrong, but most people are not that way. At least in my experience. Sure there’s hateful and bad people in any group, but much of the faux outrage and racism is directed by people who have an agenda and ulterior motives. We all should respect each other, but we all should be able to recognize what is truly hateful and what is just life.

Cancel culture may be extremist but inaccurately portraying another culture is offensive, and more so when the actor is NOT of that culture. Not everyone is offended with that trope tho. Americans are usually portrayed in kdramas as awkward and not intelligent. They are given v menial roles and are treated condescendingly or talked about behind their backs. I get that that's how foreigners are treated irl yet americans don't take offense prolly bc we love kdramas, but we do take serious note. Some of us are transitioning to c, j, tdramas, not only bc of this, but mainly bc of boredom. I hope things get better and production companies go back to meaningful and beautifully written scripts. I would hate to leave kdramaworld which has been and still is part of my life for the last 16 yrs.
