Irregular Wear Pattern Sedimentary deposits have caused the inside ring to wear irregularly, creating a wear pattern on the tube which causes the ring head to jam. Dissolve the sediments on the head. Smooth off the tube with sandpaper finishing up with a 320 grit or better. And regrease for a frictionless release upon activation. Cheers

Low pressure can be caused by several things but if all your heads are good and one is low then chances are you have a block somewhere or maybe some debris is clogging your last head. Did you try replacing it?

Yes, these types of heads do require attention from time to time but it's pretty easy to lubricate. Another solution is to buy additional head for a quick swap out when they become sticky. They're not that expensive.

Well James ,where there's a will ,there is a way .Cool quick fix sure it will require greasing maybe two to three times pa because of the climate there .:)

Very nice video, thanks for your production and sharing. If you have calcium deposits that may be at the root of the problem, perhaps some 0000 steel wool and turtle wax would both remove the friction causing deposits, and apply a lubricating finish to the plastic rod. I came here because I have a brand new 4" Rain Bird sprinkler unit that won't pop up. You certainly have a beautiful landscape, kudos on all of your hard work!

They don't need grease. Just clean it or go buy a new one they are cheap. Sprinklers last 3-5 years depending on your use and weather. They should be checked and cleaned every year and keep DIRT and grass from sitting over them. YOURS are too far down below surface. You don't need them to be that low to avoid the lawnmower. I look mine just a but proud. Yes they are subject to being stepped on but I am not talking way above ground level. Trim grass short as well carefully.

I see your using Rachio. I use it as well. Wish there was some features on there.. like a test feature.. because when you are messing with sprinkler heads and go to stop, your fingers get wet and try to stop on your phone is impossible.. This is so true for Drip Systems especially. How did the grease hold up? I am about to go out this very second and replace a few heads. I thought of using Spa and Pool Lube on the head. I think it would last longer than what you did. But very curious to see how well it held up. Please let me know. Great Vid.
@MyPIDream2 жыл бұрын
When I'm testing I set the Quick Run feature to 1 min. This way if my fingers are wet and I'm fumbling with the phone app it doesn't run long. The grease has to be reapplied from time to time on 3 of my pop ups. Those I showed in this video and one in the back yard. I never have issues with the rotary pop up.
@bluev3nom2 жыл бұрын
@@MyPIDream Gotcha. I live in AZ. I just replace the whole unit. Can't take the risk with the yard for a few days or it dies here lol. I do the one minute test too.. but that is still far way too long with drips.. Ever had to replace a drip line while you are diagnosing what is going on? 20 seconds of water causes an hour of wait time. I wish i had seconds. 10 seconds would be perfect.
@MyPIDream2 жыл бұрын
Lucky with the Rachio app you can just hit the pause or stop button after a few seconds of getting wet. As you've probably noticed, I'm always in short, flip-flops and a t-shirt so I don't mind getting a little wet. It's all good!

Could there be an issue with the installation level of your sprinkler valves? Don't they need to be at a certain level? Not sure if it needs to be above or below ground though with sprinklers at so many levels, like your yard) in order for pipes to have enough water pressure to pop up the sprinklers.

Cool trick. Maybe don't do this though if there is not a backflow preventer on the system. Could end up with grease (or whatever lubricant) in your house water.
@MyPIDream3 жыл бұрын
This is not tied to our house but rather our underground cistern. Back flow preventers are highly recommended for safety of your house water. Good comment for those considering attaching an irrigation system to their water supply.

I have noticed you have the lawn growing right up against the walls of your house. Is there a reason for this. In Europe we normally have a 30 cm gap between the house and lawn filled with pebbles, good for drainage, or tiles.
@MyPIDream4 жыл бұрын
No reason. I normally reserve this area for flowers or shrubs. I can transplant the grass to other locations later when I decide to dig it up and plant something different. I've been donating the grass to my neighbors. Since I have French pipes under this area no need for pebbles for drainage.

Thanks for the video! If my sprinklers aren’t popping up with my irrigation system but they are (better but not completely) when i manually open the valve via solenoid, what do you think the issue could be?
@MyPIDream2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like low water pressure to me. Your pump should be pushing around 65psi for multiple heads. Normal irrigation pressure is 40-80psi.

I just grab popups like that and pull them up - then step on it while its squirting and work it up and down a few times with my foot.Yeah, you get wet, wear flip flops, and a divers watch :).

How long did it last? I notice some of my heads retreating into the soil, so I'm going to add 2" risers to those, but the others are sputtering like yours. I've thought of using grease but wondered if it wont get washed away. However, my 4" sprinklers this year have been terrible - a lot of sputtering. I have hard water, and this maybe an annual/biannual thing for me to do now - go around each zone and lubricate the shafts. Please let us know if it lasted a season or a couple months.
@MyPIDream2 жыл бұрын
The grease will get washed away and you'll have to reapply from time to time. Hard water is really bad for your irrigations. You should insert a water softener filter cartridge between your supply and irrigation heads. I have 2 filters, sediment and softener.
@4203 жыл бұрын
Tried this trick with plumbers grease on a bunch of heads and it did nothing. I think my next step is replacing a few of them. It's seems as if I can only get them to pop up if I manually hold one or two up manually and have my wife turn the problem zone on. By me holding one up, it seems to jumpstart and allow the rest in the zone to popup. Idk what the deal is.
@MyPIDream3 жыл бұрын
I think replacement is one of the easiest options after a while. At least these pop ups aren't expensive but for me hard to get as I have to order from the US. Not readily available in hardware stores here.

Very Weird Question: Does WD40 also work? I am asking because that is literally the only thing I have that can lubricate the sprinkler head.
@MyPIDream3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't think so as it will probably allow too much water to leak out around the pop up. Also it doesn't have the adhesion power of thicker lubricants.

I spray my toilet valves with a light silicone lubricant and I get triple the use out of a toilet valve. The companies want you to just buy a new one, so natural they don’t recommend it.
@taxpayerzombie Жыл бұрын
This is a great tip, but be careful about the choice of lubricant. Lubricants based on silicone, perfluorinated PFAE, mineral oils, and synthetic hydrocarbons (SHC or PAO), typically work well with plastics. Lubricants made from esters and polyglycols are not suitable for most plastics. Mixing additives with plastic materials can also lead to an unplanned reaction between the lubricant and plastic.
