Worth adding..the glow plug relay can be at fault, it's generally located under the fuse-board in the engine bay. Access by removing the fuse-board, or much more easily by taking out the battery, and retrieving it sideways from underneath the fuse-board.

I had a ceramic glowplug come out without a tip, what a pain that turned out to be. Head had to come off, chipped piston and a valve, so I can only assume it happened when running. Fortunately it was only superficial damage and engine continued to run fine after reassembly (and still does).

I'm going to be replacing my harness, maybe today. You mention weather proofing the harness. What do you mean? And is using some dielectric grease on the electrical connector a good idea? (To keep moisture and sure out of the connection.) And if you put some anti-seize on the threads doesn't that affect the torque used ... aka you need to slightly reduce the torque to avoid over torquing it? :-)

Well, we're waiting....... ???
@scottphillips59013 жыл бұрын
@@RollYourRock (MK4 TDI ) It's been a while but I think I just replaced all four plugs. Pretty sure I still had an issue and narrowed it down to the harness. The biggest problem that I had with the install was installing the new harness. They ones available need to be spliced into the existing wiring. There isn't a lot of existing wire to work with so you won't have a lot of chances to get it right. I soldered and shrink wrapped my splice...wasn't as pretty as I would have liked....but it's been working 100% since then. I also put some dielectric grease on the connections for the glowplus where they connect to the harness. We can get over 30C in summer, and below -30C here in winter....and so far, no issues. :) I also didn't use any anti-seize on the treads. Just torqued to whatever the recommended value is. As I recall I'm pretty sure that I also put some dielectric grease on the bare wires in the splice before I shrink wrapped them. Just some extra peace of mind to keep corrosion away.

15 nm ( newton metres ) for UK views. I used torque wrench to also undo them, also set to 15 nm. I sprayed plus gas on the threads when re-installing. I then used torque wrench to tighten, but found it "snug" below 15 nm ( newton metres ) so did not go tighter. Mine were the originals ( 11 volt version ) on 17 year old VW tdi with 126,000 miles. I dont think they will need changing again. I used genuine VW "Bosch" glow plugs and not a different brand so I know the replacement were made identically & should last as long as the factory original. I also replaced the harness too as it was cracked in a number of places and again used genuine VW so I know it should last another 17 years at least.
@PaulGuiry2 жыл бұрын
Tell me more about the harness replacement, please. Did you have to splice it in as he suggests in this video, or how far back along does it go until there's a connector? Are the genuine harnesses expensive? Thanks.
@ferenczsinko67702 жыл бұрын
@@PaulGuiry @Paul Guiry I just simply cut the original wire back as far as I could reach without having to remove anything. I then just measured the distance after fitting the new harness and cut the wire to match the piece cut out. I then got a chockablock and connected the wires and wrapped in electrical tape

Well done and very informative video. Excellent points with the 5 and 7V plug voltage and anti-seize. If that same glow cylinder's plug fails again and has erosion like that, you probably have a bad injector. Glow plugs are cheap, injectors are not. Hoping you just had a bad glow plug.

And you newer clean that hole before instal new glow plug?
@pr0xZen4 жыл бұрын
This has to be a common sense judgement call on a case by case basis. Here, we have pretty much a like-new sparkly clean engine bay. Cleaning the plug hole threads here, would carry a bigger risk of _introducing_ debree (from the tools and means used to clean), than if not cleaning them.

I had 3 of the damned things snap off on a BMW X5 3.0D. Wasted 2 days trying to get the remaining ones out. Tried heat, cold, left hand drills and taps, e-z outs you name it. Still starts and runs ok though. Always warm the engine first and spray some penetrating fluid down there.. On the manufacturers website they'll give a value for shear torque. Set your torque wrench a bit below this and try to unscrew them. If they don't unscrew at that torque setting they'll probably snap
@TheBlaert3 жыл бұрын
@n325aej yeah norbar make one. I'm sure there are other makes too. They're just like an ordinary reversible ratchet. Just look for reversible torque wrenches. Handy thing to have. And edit, it seems not all of them torque in reverse even though they're reversible.

Brandon Maciel if you just bought the car then you should replace them all anyway so you won't get a failure anytime soon, but when you do get a failure with only 1 glow plug then replace the only one if you had a failure when you only replaced them not to long ago, but if you get a failure after a long time of not replacing them then just replace them all because then the rest of them could fail shortly after.

My mechanic told me my captiva diesel diesn't have spark plug. Is that what this glow plugs are for
@G1yndyfrdwy6 жыл бұрын
No. diesels do not have a spark plug, only petrol engines. A diesel works on the basis that the fuel/air mixture explodes when compressed. The glow plugs heat the mixture up at the initial fireup, to get the engine moving. With damaged glow plugs, the starting may be a problem, not the general running (although you may not get it going) Some vehicles will start from cold without the plugs, eg older landrovers. The plugs do not take a part in the ongoing engine firing like a spark plug, just at the start......
