Nobody should have had to endure what Nancy Kerrigan did. But these comments about her being “the best ever,” or having, “the cleanest programs,” are ridiculous. Most of her programs were clean because they weren’t difficult- when you’re at that level. It was clean because there were never any risks in her programs. Her choreography was just boring. She was always a weak jumper- little height, combos were always a thorn in her side. Her footwork was average. Her speed was average. Her flexibility was below average. She had one signature move……I could do that same spiral, holding my leg, when I was 10. I can still do it at 49. It may look good, but it’s not hard to execute. She was lovely. Her costumes were beautiful. She often looked like an angel, but she just wasn’t this incredible Olympian figure skater. If not for the whack heard around the world, nobody would be talking about her. Tonya had everything Nancy didn’t…except the elegance. Ironically, if you could have molded Tonya and Nancy together, you would have had one hell of a skater!

I disagree that Kerrigan never took risks. She did triple toe triple toe which doesnt seem exciting now but 30 plus years ago definitely was risky. She also did the lutz late in her program may times, very risky because it wasnt done on fresh legs. She also had interesting jumps like the shoot the duck into her solo double in the short programs, or spread eagle into a jump. Imo she was better technically than artistically alot of the times, it just gets forgotten when you compare her to Yamaguchi, Harding, Ito or Bonaly.

Nancy was slim and attractive with elegant costumes, but a rather boring skater who never seemed to polish her choreography until each move was completely finished. Maybe that was a coaching problem. Perhaps if she had had one of the Russian coaches (Who coached Oksana Baiul, Gordeeva and Grinkov?), her natural skating ability could have been nurtured into memorable performances. In this video, she just looks lazy, half-committed and pretty much indifferent.

She did not want to wear the medal during the parade as her mother was trying to hand it to her. Mickey Mouse took it out of her mother's hand and gave it to Nancy. She took the medal reluctantly and was not bitching at Mickey. This was deliberate and uncalled for. She was not being rude. Of course you have your mind made up. I don't know why Kerrigan was such a fan favorite or received such high marks, she just never seemed exciting or innovative. But she certainly was successful and lucky for having a supportive family and lots of financial backing. Winning 2 Olympic medals! I mean she was clean with her performance, but she's really stiff like a robot. Although she has elegance, she doesn't really captivate me. it's repetitive too. watching her skate is so typical and predictable. she never spices it up. her injury was NOT as bad as the news made it out to be. It was just a bad bruise. she said in an interview once, that if it was any higher or lower, it couldve damaged her severely. we all seem to forget that AT THE OLYMPICS Oksana Baiul had bad injuries too, which were clearly visible in her performance, yet she came FIRST! America women had to be figure skaters with no ballet training, so no one ever figured out what to do with their arms to make them exquisitely beautiful. The Europeans and Russians always knew from an early age that the arms were just as important as the legs. The Americans just left out the top half of the body basically. The top half of American skaters are usually amateurish when compared to a professional ballerina. If she had had serious ballet lessons, she would have won in my opinion.

Skating back in the '90s seemed more pleasing to the eye. Nowadays, programs look too busy with all the difficult elements crammed in. Like music videos today, it's all skin and flesh. There has to be contrast --- a play on both light and shadow. Everything is just too over-exposed --- there's no depth or balance; no highs and lows.

This truly was the best I've ever seen her. The music and movement is dynamic and exciting and the skating is clean. Very good blend. I can see why they thought she was going to win going into the last part of the program. The only thing I'll say is some of her movement is sluggish, especially the spins. But it was graceful. This is a good program. The issue that I have always had with Nancy Kerrigan is that she seems like a very unlikable person. I appreciate her skating and admire her for getting back on the ice after her being hobbled and she was epic for doing just that but is that supposed to mean that she should medal or win? She was pedestrian with her skating and never exceeded herself nor the sport. What I find most problematic with her is the way she lost. By the end of the competition she was cringeworthy and bitchy and I lost all respect for her. I watched the Olympics that year, we all did, and by the end of the event I and many others were glad to see her not win. She did not in any way advance the sport of figure skating.

It was a mistake for the IOC to change the winter games year bc this is what it produced. But then again look at all the mistakes the IOC have been doing ever since. i agree with you completely,,,,,,it wasn;t until the video aired of the soviet and european judges communicating with each other by tapping on the boards,,,,and then i believe it was the french judge who admitted to the scandal of fixing the scores....these young atletes work so hard,and sacrifice so much..its a damn shame not to be judged on there performance,and not politics....nancy was the better skater,oksana the better dancer,,,but the sport is FIGURE SKATING,,NOT FIGURE DANCING

Still, it’s usually next to impossible to judge figure skating and hand out medals. Everyone screams that this person or that person should have won. It isn’t speed skating with a clock. Maybe if someone gets far enough to represent their country at the Olympics, and there are 36 women skaters, they should just give 3 gold, 6 silver, 9 bronze, and 18 no medal. I’m so tired of hearing people scream that Oksana shouldn’t have won or that G&G shouldn’t have won. At the top three level, the skaters are so insanely good that judging them and tearing them down is just nitpicking.

I find everything in this performance pretty boring: the music, the coreography, the interpretation. The execution is smooth but also uninteresting. I admire her for being able to recover after the attack, step up and go out there and deliver the excellent way she did, but there is nothing in this or her other performance from that competition that makes me want to go back and watch the videos again (except the dresses).

Nancy is a beautiful and elegent skater, always one of the best dressed skaters. Having said that, I felt a coldness from her that made me not care for her. Also she was a skater who skated better in practice rather than putting it all together in the competitions. Been to many skating events and always noticed she really skated better in practice. The 94 Olympics she almost puts it all together, for me it was her best skate in a competition.

5.6 by the British judge may seem low, but Nancys spins were weak, the sit spin particularly, but 5.6 for the artistic mark from the GB judge was harsh, that should have been a 5.8

Can someone who knows a little about skating tell me what it means that when Nancy jumps it looks “weighted”? I know that seems like an odd thing to say. It’s almost like it’s really slow and heavy. Is that because the precision and control are perfect, I mean is that ideal in competition or is supposed to look more “light and fast” like Oksana’s jumps?

Nancy’s jumps are stronger and technically superior to Oksana’s. In this program, every jump she does is textbook. Perfection. She doesn’t have a lot of natural spring to her jumps, but she has speed and excellent technique, which is why she is able to get the jumps done. Someone like Tara Lipinski had a very fast spin to her jumps but lacked the height and speed of skaters like Nancy and Tonya. Kristi was a skater that had natural spring and a quick rotation as well as good flow. It’s all down to body mechanics and the technique you’re taught. Nancy is taller for a skater, so you’ll see that her elements look different from someone who is smaller which might result in a “heavier” looking jump. However, if the jump is properly executed with height, speed, clean edges, and completed rotations, that jump *should* be marked well regardless of style. Tonya, Liz, and Midori all had very compact, strong bodies and you’ll see their jumps are fast, high, and explosive. But all three struggled with looking graceful. It’s all very interesting. I don’t know if that helps at all lol

Just listen to all of the skating experts that judge her skating on only one thing, they don't like her. It's not that they are dumb. it's just that they know so much that just ain't so. They don't have an honest bone in their body. Nancy Kerrigan's performance in these Olympics completely outskated everybody that participated. Her triple triple combination, her triple luz ,double toe loop combination that Oksana Baiul just didn't do. The only combination jump Oksana did was a weak double double at the end, and that triple at the end was also another missed landing as her skate scraped the ice. She had five Commie pals on the judging panel that gave her ridiculous high marks on technical merit that gave the gold to cheat the American out of the gold medal. It had nothing to do with the skating and everything to do with them still fighting the cold war . Oksana was Ukraine and Nancy was American. Nancy got six 5.9s in the artistic column as did Oksana so artistic impression had nothing to do with it Nancy's spin at the end was so beautiful, where Oksana's spin looked like she was just a beginner.

I always knew this was an excellent performance, but watching it now (not the 10-year-old fan I was in 1994) I truly appreciate how masterful this performance was. Watch the command she had over that difficult, sophisticated footwork. Her delay double flip, one of her unique elements that rarely got attention--the double jump usually a throwaway move for the women, but she made the element into something beautiful and difficult. I just love how she came through a career marked by some disastrous performances (amid some really good ones!) and delivered two top-notch performances where it counted most!
