Speaking slower and clearer is something I learned in sales, b/c if you talk over the listener they get confused and stop listening. Making the specific sounds clearly will help build the correct pronunciation habits for better speaking.

Because of your fantastic videos and enthusiasm for the company, I decided to apply to VIPKID. Thanks for the link to the website. I taught English conversation in Japan to children a long time ago, so I'm a little rusty. Your videos have reminded me of how much fun teaching non-English speaking kids a new language can be! I'm a little nervous about switching from in-person to online with young children, but with all of your tips and ideas I'm sure I'll get through it. My interview is in a little less than 48 hours so I'll continue to pour over your videos. Thanks again for this fantastic resource and introducing me to VIPKID!

Thank you for such an awesome video. I’m actually devouring all of your videos as I’m planning to apply to teach from Australia.. You make the lessons fun, interesting and I totally agree, interacting and going slowly with a child is key. The reward system you show is simply stellar as I’ve found that the more enjoyment and positive reenforcement a child receives increases their learning capabilities tenfold. I’m scared about actually taking the next step but have had huge success in teaching 3 to 4 year olds to read before kindergarten and primary school and tutoring ‘special needs’ to catch up with their peers so I’m sure I can really offer these kids something. With the help that your wonderful videos provide, I’m hoping they’ll get me the grade (pardon the pun) I need to be accepted. Thank you so much again lovely lady!❤️

Your response to the interviewing process is dead on. It is hard and I love how you said it "speaks to the good quality of the company." Cindi, the CEO, has always said that she wants the best quality education. I would reapply in 3 months and know that they have training workshops and one-on-one courses to help train applicants in transitioning to the online, ESL format!!! Sounds like you did a great job preparing, and taken the feedback you were given you have the opportunity to practice it and teach another Mock Class. I sure hope you do!!!

Related, about 26 years ago Georgia had a requirement to teach a class, with an out of school evaluator, during their first year. It was a lot of stress and a number of people failed. My school had an in service with someone from the district and they said the most common fail was "Give an enthusiastic introduction." The woman said, work out a good introduction to your class and then during the introduction say, "I will begin with an enthusiastic introduction", and then give your introduction. The lady said that when people did this there were almost no fails. Crazy, huh?

Glad to see that the Memory Game took 2 minutes for half the slide... I've been trying for the life of me to get it down closer to 1 minute. One of the things I did poorly in M1 was spending ~2 min on each slide, when I should've spent ~1. Some slides will take longer than others, some will be short, but I really want to stay within the time w/out rushing it. It's a fine balance to speak slowly and be patient so the student really learns , but also keep within the time constraint. I've got my Mock 2 tomorrow. Anyone want to Skype with me and run through it?
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
I hope that Mock 2 goes well!!! Wahooooo!!! As far as pacing goes, practice, practice and be aware of it as you do, but don't let it take over and keep you from hitting the best quality in your instruction! Some teachers will be so worried about their pacing that they won't use all of the other ESL techniques that are so important (modeling, repetition, full sentences, positive corrections, sentence objectives, TPR, slow speed of speech, and adding extension questions when needed). Good luck!
@Brainbuster7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Nancy. Quick question.. _"How are you?"_ is one of the target sentence patterns for the Mock 1. However it's also listed under *Student's Prior Knowledge Sentence Patterns.* I was under the impression that *Target Vocab* and *Target Sentence Patterns* = Lesson Objective. Is the idea behind the objectives to get the student to _produce_ the new words and the old sentences? Thanks!

Hi Nancy, I am preparing for an express interview, and am stumped. Please see the following: • Q2: Use TPR (total physical response) to teach (30 seconds): • The word bicycle to a 5-year old who does not speak English. • The sentence “I see a bicycle” If I only am given 30 seconds, I assume I do not have to introduce myself right, or say good bye? • Q3: Prepare and teach the following slide using ESL teaching techniques. Imagine the student is a 5-year old. (about 1 min - 1:30min) What does it mean to use ESL (English as a Second Language), is there a technique I have missed? Again, do I introduce myself, and say good bye? I am so nervous, because I really want this job, but I do not want to botch it, I want to nail it. In addition, I hope you can answer this soon, I would like to do this tomorrow if possible. By the way, I enjoy your videos, they have been extremely helpful.

As a speech pathologist, audiologist and classroom teacher, the letter "x" is not pronounced 'ecs', it is pronounced 'by the sound it makes. In the words fox and ox, the 'x' is not said as 'ecs' , other wise the words would be pronounced 'fahecs' and 'ahecs'. See what I'm getting at? The video was an excellent visual example of modes of learning. I like that very much. See, hear, say, show, say again. Repeating several times in different modes is a must with ESL or slow learners too. I use these demonstrative modes in the classroom quite successfully.

Hi Nancy, I`m not a native speaker, but I watch your videos and find them very useful. I`d like to be so energetic as you are on the screen. How do you manage it? It`s amazing!
@NancyTaylor3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I think the energy is much easier to share when it is in a recorded video vs. teaching back to back classes, but the students will give you energy and the joy for what you are doing!

I passed my mock class the 1st time and used some of your tips!!! Wooohoooo!! I am a little overwhelmed and trying to navigate the website and have yet to find the information I need. How far in advance will I know what lesson I will be teaching? I read somewhere (and now I cannot get back to that page) where it stated I would be able to view the lesson 6-12 hours in advance. This will be my 1st time "officially" teaching with VIPKID and am nervous I won't have the information on time. HELP!!!

Hi Nancy! I have my Mock #1 class soon and I am wondering if you have any fabulous tips on teaching the Sit and Stand slide without too much incidental language? Your videos are so great! Thank you!!!!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
To teach the "Sit or Stand." I will say, "Pig" then take my hand to my ear to have my student repeat. I will then say, "We sit" with a big thumbs up and showing with hands pushing down for sit. I have the student repeat "We sit" by taking my hand to my ear and having them repeat. I then erase the board and circle the pig and say, "Panda?" Hand to ear for the student to repeat. I say, "No" if the student doesn't first with a big X with my arms. The student repeats, "No" by signaling with my hand to my ear. I then say, "We stand" having the student repeat and motioning a thumbs down and standing up. This takes a lot of encouragement with your arms to get the student standing. You'll notice that I didn't say a lot of words, but used a lot of TPR and modeled while having the student speaking 50% during my explanation. Then when I circle the next word and say a word for it I will use a lot of TPR to help the student know to sit or stand. You can ask, "What is it?" if you say the wrong word. Good luck!

I am beyond shocked that I was not chosen after Mock 2. The interviewer couldn't even find many negatives. She said I did very well and it was evident that I work with children and I can alter my lesson based on student needs and understanding. I obsessively watched videos and was over prepared. The ONLY negative was she said I was lagging. I teach kindergarten and I have 16 ESL kids in my class so this is very normal teaching for me. I can't even come up with a reason for not passing.

Susan! Did you get your feedback. The mentor will send you feedback that has your score and shows where it is marked down. It also has typed out feedback with specifics for your teaching. If you haven't received it send them an email and ask for it. Use the feedback and then reapply! I'm happy to help you through the process! Don't give up! nancytaylor6262@gmail.com

I love your videos! I have my Mock 1 tomorrow night and have been practicing. I have a question on how you transition between slides?! That's been a difficult thing for me to figure out! Thank you so much for taking the time to help others in this way!!!! Getting a position with VIPKID would be a HUGE blessing for my family and I and I feel confident and prepared because of your videos!!
@NancyTaylor7 жыл бұрын
Jamie! Good luck tomorrow night!! I hope that everything goes well! With the level one student I avoid transitional phrases such as "Now it is time to review." or "Lets do our Warm-up." I change the slide and immediately start modeling how to do the activity by stating a simple word or sentence while the student repeats and I circle on the screen or my whiteboard. It is so simple and basic that your transitions are simply changing the page:) Keep me posted!

Thank you so much!!!! I had great feedback and was offered a position at the end of the interview and had the offer email within 5 minutes of exiting the classroom portal!! Wow!! I'm so excited! My Mock 1 is Wednesday afternoon!!

I was confused here as I called my first interview/demo lesson "mock 1" in this comment. That's what I really had last night. Wednesday afternoon is my Mock 1. Thank you again!! Your tips and encouragement are super helpful!!

Hi again, Nancy! My Mock 1 went so great (as far as I could tell - great feedback and such). It was so much fun!! It was yesterday at 4p.m. EST. About how long does it usually take to hear back? I haven't heard anything yet and I'm beginning to feel antsy! 😉

I was worried about booking my interview until I watched this video. My boyfriend is a native Spanish speaker who knows minimal English, and I am the opposite! I realize that I am already using TPR with him!!! Just on a smaller scale :P

Nancy, I did get hired with VIPKID thanks in large part to your amazing videos. Now I have questions. What program are you using for editing and adding catchy tunes to your videos. I'm thinking of changing my welcome video but want to do something to catch the parents' eye. Thanks so much!

Stacy! Congratulations!!! I use Imovie to edit my videos and KZbin has music that you can download for free and use on your videos! I would recommend searching youtube for a simple tutorial on creating your video! Best of luck!

I just started my application using your link above. I was wondering how long my initial video should be and about how many minutes I should spend per slide. Thanks!
@NancyTaylor6 жыл бұрын
Molly! Spend about 1-2 minutes per slide. If it is the initial interview/demo it is 10 minutes and if it is the Express Interview then it is less than 6 minutes in total with intro and instruction. Shoot me an email for my resources! nancytaylor6262@gmail.com

Hi Nancy! I have my mock interview tomorrow at 9.30pm. I have been watching your videos non stop since yesterday and absorbing all of the material VIPKIDS gives you in their web page. Do you have any suggestions regarding props or materials for tomorrow? I have a 2 year old and she has a bunch of toys and learning materials I could use. I do not have a white board, arrrghhh !!! Any suggestions? By the way, thanks for posting all of the videos, they are a BIG HELP!! I have already subscribed to your channel. Thanks! Daniela
