Agreed, that race was total and utter WTF from start to finish. 2003 more than made up for it though. Kept the streak alive too. Consider that for 15 years nobody won Surfers twice, it was always the most intriguing race of the year IMO wondering if anyone was gonna win twice.

For The 500 thing...it's not actually a WTF and more of a legal thing. Marlboro had a huge presence in CART at the time and their signage was everywhere but due to the Master Settlment Agreement, it couldn't be mentioned or shown on TV at all, hence CART went with The 500 instead and dropped the Marlboro name to comply with the law. Same deal with Michigan, Marlboro was the title sponsor for a long while but in the early 90s the TV networks simply called it the Michigan 500 to not promote cigarette firms. Go look at any post 1998 CART race, and note how many times a cigarette firm is mentioned. It's not as many as pre MSA. Also, the same MSA prevented Kyle Busch from running in the 2001 Truck race due to Marlboro's involvement, and once again they were never mentioned by name, but the signage was shown...however the argument there was it was newsworthy...which it was. So, no WTF moment for The 500. Also....actually, Marlboro sponsored the Miami race at Homestead for CART and Toyota was the official title sponsor on TV for The Grand Prix of Miami.Lastly...the Marlboro logos and colors were still on the event logo if nyone looked hard enough. And in 1999, Forsythe actually removed their Players cigarette branding from the cars in that race, and in 2000 too to comply with the laws on cigarette advertising. So there you go.

@DieKolkrabe8 жыл бұрын
Nope, it was down to the fact the title sponsor (Marlboro) couldn't actually be shown on TV due to the laws on cigarette firms after the Master Settlement Agreement took effect, it limited what the cigarette makers could or couldn't do on TV and advertising. Short version: Marlboro could put up their signs and fund Penske. Couldn't be mentioned on TV or have their signage shown on TV except on Penske cars. IIRC there was a rule in place for the TV networks stating they were not legally allowed to mention cigarette firms unless there was no other option. For instance, Marlboro Penske became Penske or Team Penske on broadcasts, or the red and white Penske cars. Same with Forsythe, they...wel....stayed Forsythe. Team KOOL green was Team Green, and so forth. Actually, the Team Green cars always looked awesome and simple, so did the Penskes. NASCAR got into a problem due to there not being any other Cup sponsor at the time so they had to mention Winstion, even thogh technically it was against the laws post MSA.

No, the sponsor was a cigarette company that couldn't sponsor the race due to legal issues (see my comment aboe for more info) so CART had to rename the event to comply with laws on tobacco adverts. Basically in 1998 the cigarette firms were forced to cut back on advertising. Hence The 500. Dumb name, but completely and utterly understandable why when you understand the title sponsor and the law.

AntonyBlalock I remember this one well. They had to run that day because (a) I think the city required them to reopen the roads to regular traffic the following day and (b) CART was scheduled to race at Fontana the very next weekend.

if u watch the replay of '2002 CART Surfers Paradise' you'll witness the broadcasters informing the viewers that this race could not be postponed the following Monday because CART signed a contract saying that they must deconstrct the course back into public road after the race was over... CART was so stupid in scheduling so much street courses that they have minimal control over!

Gaston Mazzacane has to be one of worst drivers in racing. His money took him far in F1 and CART. CART blatantly fixed the Australia race because the drivers and teams that were ahead before Mario Dominguez were leaving for Indycar or NASCAR the following season. They fix it for one of CART "guys" to win the race. More embarrassing that Mario Dominguez first words when he crossed the line was "Does that mean we win?" Mario can thank CART for gifting him the win. He couldn't qualify Indy 500 in several tries after the unification
