As a veterinarian, I am so glad you are mentioning pets. It is absolutely heart breaking when pet owners bring their pets to the clinic for a serious condition and cannot afford the appropriate treatment, therefore ending up forcing our hand to euthanase the pet as there is no other humane alternative. Pets do bring a lot of joy in our lives, but they are a massive financial commitment and people should therefore make absolutely sure they can afford them before buying/adopting a dog or cat.

Even excluding dogs, cats, and other "free walking pets", I think most people would be surprised how much "tank pets" cost. I grew up with a lot of fish in my house, but it wasn't until I set up my own tank in college that I realized how much this really cost. Tank, substrate, filter, heater (depends), live plants (optional but highly recommended), cleaning supplies, etc. all add up before you even get the fish themselves, and I just kept low maintenance shrimp/nano fish! I would not be surprised if reptiles, exotic bugs, or birds also have a deceptive price tag to maintain.

As an animal lover and someone working in the pets industry, I’m so glad about your speech concerning owning a pet. I believe that someone should get a pet only when ready to actually invest time and money into them. So many just go for the cheapest food and cheapest everything and it drives me crazy! And so many don’t research the type of animal their are getting and end up overwhelmed and give the animal up and it’s just terrible. I have to pets of my own and I make sure they have the best quality for everything and I will cut on other things in my budget to make sure they have everything to by healthy and happy.

@@chillinwithluis that would depend on the dog, a border collie would need at the very least one hour of walk and hours of exercise and mental stimulation, a smaller dog could be just fine with two half hours a day, even a tiny chihuahua needs its walks, enrichment exercises like training, puzzles, etc. It also depends on the age and condition and obviously the weather(extreme hot or cold are not good) ideally searching the breed and knowing your dog will help you figure out what type of exercise it needs, but every single dogs needs to get out of the house and the yard for mental enrichment and moving their bodies!!

Urban gardening... At least you know what you eat, if you grow it (gardening is one of most important things everyone should learn in schools, unfortunately they don't teach us). On other hand for example you should avoid buying tomatoes, cucumbers etc. over winter, it's simply fake, not healthy and it can go 4x of normal price... I guess Italians in first place made tomato pasta in order to preserve it for days when they can't grow some. This way you can save more than 1k per year, not to speak about health...

Or move in with a roommate who has pets (but make sure she/he takes good care of them first). I was dreaming of getting a pet but wasn't ready to take responsibility, but happened to moved in with a girl who has cat and doggo who are now my best buddies too. She takes all the responsibilities and I only help taking care of them once she's out of town. But get to play with the cat or take doggo on a walk almost every day. Win/win for both me and her.

Your point about pets is so true. I took over my family dog in my early 20's and put so much money towards her over those years. I was lucky not to have a massive vet bill at that point in my life, but was still always amazed by how much it cost to keep her well. She was her own line in my budget, so worth it, but it took commitment and sacrifice.

This is actually really good advice. I love dogs, but you do really have a good point. Pets are great and if you’re in a good place to spend a little extra money on pet food and medical expenses. Christmas decorations can also get really expensive. It’s nice to have a couple classic pieces to put up each year and put you in the mood for the holiday season but too many lights and blow ups can also increase your electricity bill too which isn’t fun. I bought a 2009 Honda Civic a couple years ago and it’s served me well ever since for my transportation needs (I don’t live in a big city so just makes more sense). Food delivery is another big expense people spend a lot of money on. I do think there is an argument to be made about grocery delivery to reduce compulsive purchases and time spent in a busy and somewhat stressful environment like Walmart. I’d love to see a video on your travel journey! I’d also like to see a video that goes through the transformations and changes you make on your vehicle before and how those changes work out in practice. Nice video!

Agree on all of these, and I'll add one. Similar to growing your own vegetables, herbs are a great thing to grow on your own. Fresh herbs are very expensive to buy at the the grocery store, and even dried herbs are not cheap. If you can grow a few of your own, you can save quite a bit of money. A small thing of dried basil can cost about $5. But I have bought potted basil plants that cost about $6 and grew for a year and a half. They give me delicious fresh basil while they're alive, and all through that time, I also clip some off periodically to either dry or freeze for later. One plant gave me probably two years' worth of basil. Similarly, my rosemary plant that I bought for about $3 when it was a tiny sprig is now a thriving bush about three feet tall, and it could live for about 20 years if it stays healthy. Herbs are great and often not that hard to grow. It's a house plant that you can eat, and it will save you lots of money.

I perked up when you mentioned long road trips and possibly living in your car. You’re so good at budgeting and planning, I think you’ll have lots of useful information to give. I’m thinking of doing my first road trip and I literally have zero experience because I live in Hawaii and road trips are a joke here. 😂 I’m very excited for you. I really hope you film videos for your trips. I will definitely watch.

I used to pay $350 per month for a storage unit on Long Island, NY. The funny thing is we own our home which has a two car garage, full attic and decent size shed. We wasted money storing the junk we wasted money on. We were also spending $1000 per month on a car payment. When I look back on it, I shake my head on the money I could’ve invested. Lessons learned.

It blows my mind when people complain about not having money and I hear they have 2 dogs, 3 cats, 1 reptile, 5 fish, etc. When did one pet not become enough, especially for those on a tight budget?

I have a coworker like that. Always complaining that she doesn't make enough money to cover her expenses and should have a raise and whatnot. Meanwhile she has a horse (had 2 until very recently), a dog, three chickens, and a few cats. And she won't work extra hours when they're available.

A person should set his goals as early as he can and devote all his energy and talent to getting there. With enough effort, he may achieve it. Or he may find something that is even more rewarding. But in the end, no matter what the outcome, he will know he has been alive.
