This talk should be required listening for every new puppy/dog handler! I’ve been fortunate to have dogs in my family for as long as I can remember but still have learned an incredible amount from this talk. I agree having dogs does not make you an expert. Didn’t even realize some of the mistakes I was making. We recently added 2 border collie puppies to our family and want to give them the best chance to be happy confident well trained dogs, and I’m so grateful for Nate’s videos to help me do that. This talk with Nate and Bethany is amazing, so packed with valuable advice...thank you both 🥰

@ Mic Christi: I'm so happy for you that you started listening to Nate & Bethany's podcasts NOW!! Honestly--I think a lot of the ways they teach is PERFECT for Border Collies & Aussies!! I have an older (almost 3 yrs old) German Shepherd, I've learned a lot. Nate is a "balanced" trainer, with HEAVY emphasis on the positive, reward side. Have you watched everything he's put out so far in June? I think it's PERFECT for young Border Collies (perfect, actually). Excellent "puppy tips" with Bethany published June 1st, and AWESOME Agility stuff with Tom Rose. If you haven't watched it yet, I'm sure you'll get a lot out of it. Border Collies are different than my German Shepherd, but VERY WONDERFUL dogs--I'm happy to hear you're starting your journey off on a good foot!! (Nate has several podcasts with Bethany, they are awesome!)💖

Thank you guys so much for this! Felt like cheering when you said you choose the pup for the family, as the breeder. I wish more breeders did this instead of letting people choose based on coat color when they're 2 days old (and I'm just a buyer, not a breeder). Wonderful advice - will be revisiting this podcast multiple times.

Armando, every successful recall MUST be a "happy party"! Even when calling your dog off a "naughty" behavior. I have a German Shepherd that has very high prey drive and goes after small dogs, cats, rabbits, foxes & deer like a crazy man. We're getting MUCH better with leash reactivity, but yesterday I pushed training near a toy Pomeranian too far, and it got out of control. He literally pulled me to ground, on a prong collar like it was nothing, which has not happened in a year, going after the Pomeranian. Thank God, I have reinforced & made recall HAPPY/FUN & OBLIGATORY, or his teeth would have been on the Pom's neck. Laying on my back after having been pulled down, I hollered "COME" and he turned away from the Pomeranian and ran back to me. If your dog is high prey drive, your recall command HAS to be 100% positive and drilled into muscle memory, no matter what!!❤🐾😘

This lady has good learned experience. I like the fact that she recognizes the different learning stages on different dogs that have learnt behaviors on their specific given drives already ingrained. this is what constitutes training in its true form. A great example is say a husky chasing squirrels 🐿 because it’s strong 💪 pray drive, the owner or food commercial trainer with the audible marker(clicker) at hand and petco poison dog training treats on the hand vs a trio of squirrels 🐿 running in front 🐕 😆 it, well good luck! This would require exactly what she mentioned as one of her examples” do the yard work on the call back” on low distractions environments on at least six different areas and then use the squirrels as the reward for the obedience. If 50% of owners(trainers) out there could accomplish this, there would be less kill shelters and more happy dog owners. Thank you for posting this video hopefully it will help lots of owners that are very confused 🤷‍♀️ 🤷‍♂️ on how to properly select a trainer to help. Food training, pray drive, play engaging and compulsion are all part of a process just like everything in life ☯️there must be a correct balance. Otherwise there will be an imbalance

Do you have any books or resources to learn more about backpacking with a dog?

@@NateSchoemer hi! I just meant, all the dogs I see are pretty trainable types. I’ve been a dogsitter for ages and there are just certain dogs that just aren’t that intelligent especially in ways that “show well.” I’ve found basset hounds quite hard to train unless you dial your expectations waaaaaay down. House breaking 👍🏻 go to your bed 👍🏻. Playing games where you hide all its food all over including the yard and having it sniff it out 👍🏻. Getting a good heal??? Recall???? “Puppy push-ups” can find a way to train that. Again-I just board these dogs (and yes I’ll give the 12 year old basset a ramp for the couch- she’s earned it). I have no idea how to stop their barking whereas my doodles respond to “thank you! I see it” and “quiet.” I’d just want to know what is and isn’t possible with “stubborn” breeds, or one that is just kind of dumb. I only see trainers demo on their own dogs (almost always high intelligent, insanely motivated dogs). I would be nice to hear about some of the limitations you may face and that having a well socialized, kind dog is in the end more important for all breeds.

Bethany's story really resonated with me I have 2 dogs 1 Is our newest member of the family she is a chocolate lab 4 months old she is in the process of being trained my other dog is a Siberian husky he is 4 years old however I made the mistake when I 1st got him and I did not train him I did not give him a life style he deserved or needed he is aggressive towards other dogs and has actually killed a miniature teacup yorkie puppy he grabbed her shook her and She had internal bleeding. him and our new 4 month old chocolate lab cannot be in the house at the same time or around one another at all unless one is in a crate and I have really learned a lot from training watching you and other youtubers online however I am really stuck on how to help kyro( the husky)I am trying the same commands and lifestyle changes for him that I do with the female lab however he is not taking to it he is still always growling when she's near if hes not in a kennel he would definitely attack her I just really need help with him I'm not sure where I'm going wrong ..the lab female is really great with her recall and her basic commands she is in the process of learning to heel and go between the legs and walk and kyro the Siberian husky I can barely even get him to sit when being commanded, he pulls a leash harder than any dog I've seen in person and online..hes actually pulled me down hill on an embankment by water. Please lend me any knowledge you have to help. I could use it more than you know.

She has an informative KZbin channel that covers a wide range of canine nutrition topics. Thanks for the recommendation I’ll look into it I’ve decided I really want to get a dog preferably GSD in the spring, I’ve never had my own dog I still live at home with my parents, we had two smaller dogs while I was growing up a jack russel who died of running into the road (very poorly trained and aggressive) and a chihuahua-min-pincher mix that we put down a couple years ago after a raccoon attacked her, she was very also poorly trained but fairly well behaved all things considered. I’m starting now doing my research because I am not going to go into this unprepared and I know a GSD is a big commitment for someone new to training a dog, I’m looking out for your next live Q&A stream I really hope I can make it, and as winter comes and I get most of my research done I might reach out and see if you know anyone in my area (Northern lower peninsula Michigan) that you can lead me towards for some hands on training

I get so much out of listening to Bethany. I am convinced my German Shepherd is not particularly dominant. Today, Bethany's description of a "dominant" dog proves my opinion. He's reactive to dogs, esp small dogs--my fault for doing dog parks the first two years 😵. He's "fine" with friend dogs, and reactivity is improving a great deal now with corrections & training. But he LOVES occasional hand feeding, has ZERO food or toy aggression. People & trainers have said he's a "dominant alpha", but he's not. By Bethany's explanation, he's not.💖

Dogs definitely remember when they've ripped up garbage. They will have tail between their legs and be looking guilty, long before you even know what they did. So theres no way they could be reading your facial expressions.

If you say so. I think your dog watches you more closely than you realize and looks "guilty" based on how you approach him. Bethany is not the only trainer who says this---other TOP trainers, like Michael Ellis, also say that if you don't catch the dog within 2 seconds of the act, correcting or punishing is ineffective. Anyway--not criticizing, just sharing what I've observed & learned. Good luck with your dog!🌞

Wow.. awesome handler. Enjoyed the show very much. I wish you could get in touch with Anders Hallgren in Sweden and bring him to one of your shows (Zoom , skype. etc ) . He was the first dog psyciatrist in the world but he is also a human psyciatrist as well . He lived in USA for many years trained dogs for the fire department etc.. he has written over 30 books and many of them in over 5 languages. He is the reason we canged the way we train dogs in Scandnavia ..Anders is very empathic , super smart and extremely funny - a very likable guy. here is his website .. and contact info :) I bet you guys would like each other a lot!! andershallgren.se/en/

Sometimes the person surrendering their pet isn't honest out of fear that their dog might be euthanized for a fight or bad habits.

If you can't govern yourself, you probably won't govern your dog. Someone who gets emotional and angry is likely to make a disastrous trainer.
