Watching highlights and docs about those Bulls teams is great. But living through it was a different experience entirely bc we didn’t know how the story would end. MJ’s last shot in Utah is a great memory to relive. But watching it live in June ‘98 with an NBA title and history on the line was almost indescribable.

I watched a game of ‘96 CHI the other day. Luc Longley was 7’2”, 270 lbs, and they went to him every possession the first 5-6 possessions. He gave CHI, lay-ups, dunks and wide open 17-footers because of his vision and passing. Dennis Rodman was as unstoppable as a defender/rebounder could be. It wasn’t just that he, - could guard virtually any position at an elite level - out-rebounded virtually everyone, even with peers of Robinson, Shaq, Mutombo, Ewing, Oakley, Daugherty, Olajuwon, Thorpe, Malone, Barkley, Willis, Mourning, and Kemp, - get to every loose ball before anyone else - make instant-offense outlet passes, - blow up his opponent’s focus and concentration, - fire up the crowd, and do all of this simultaneously for 34 minutes per game without getting tired, he also just had high b-ball intelligence, a real swagger, and a real mental toughness that just said, “you guys are not going to win this game.” Toni Kukoč was 6’10” with handles, quickness, passing, post-game, and perimeter shooting. He was too quick and had too good an outside shot for the big/strong guys, and had too much size, footwork and low-post touch for the small/quick guys. He could make plays with the pass on the break, in the half-court, from the perimeter from the post, and he made his FTs A 7’0” 250 lbs outsider shooter in Bill Wennington who seemed to make every 18-footer he ever took. Already there is too much size and versatility when we talk about the combined skills from Kukoč, Longley, Wennington and Rodman, that of outside shooting, passing, FT-shooting, post scoring, rebounding and defense, that of dudes with an average height of 6’11”. Again, too much size and depth. Depth? How about the #1 all-time leader in career 3PT%, Steve Kerr? Between Jud Buechler, Ron Harper, Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan they had outside shooting, passing, low-post scoring, rebounding and defense from 4 guys avg. height of 6’6” They were too smart, too big, too deep, too well-rounded, too unselfish and had too much Jordan to be beaten by anybody.

Dude, I agree that the 96 Bulls are most likely the best team ever, but slow your roll on some of these role players..Jud Buechler played like 7 min per game and shot 36% from 3 but 53% from FT in the playoffs..he basically made less than 1 shot per game ! Kerr could help space the floor and hit a 3 or two..but couldn't defend anyone ! Kukoc was like Hedo Turkoglu ..he could shoot (but actually shot very poorly in the 96 playoffs) but was a poor defender..still, a good scoring option from the bench, but he wasn't dominating anyone..Wellington..less than 10min and made 1 or 2 shots per game and didn't even averaged 2 rebounds and couldn't block shots ! The truth is..besides Kukoc and Kerr, they didn't really have depth..that's why Pippen and Jordan played 40min ...still their starting 5 was so strong and the pieces complemented themselves so well, no team (now or then) could beat them in a 7 games series !

Not like Russell had, Magic/Kareem had, Bird had, Lebron had, Steph had, etc. After watching more games of the ‘96 Bulls, I think their overall chemistry and complimentary parts are better than I thought they were. I always thought MJ/Pippen/Rodman was the best defensive trio ever. Still do. I always thought Kukoč was a very good 6th man, a versatile x-factor. I still do. I guess I always thought their defense drove a lot of their offense, with Pippen and MJ doing all the ball-handling/facilitating and scoring with very marginal contributions from anyone other than Kukoč. I think the way they punished defenses with their team offense is better than I previously thought is all I’m saying

As a die-hard Warriors fan since the early 1990s, the 96 Bulls will literally demolish the Warriors. If the Bulls played in the current NBA, they will be ranked #1 in both defense and offense in the league. Randy Brown as a bench warmer could guard Stephen one on one and then you also have Ron Harper, standing at 6'7", MJ, Pippen, and Rodman. We do not even need to talk about offense.

Nah they wouldn’t. How can you be ranked #1 in O when they wouldn’t have enough firepower. The 72 win season in the finals they used 7 players at least 18 minutes. Kerr at about 18 & Harp at about 18 or 19 then you have Mj, Pip, Rodman, Longley (no foot speed or quickness that in no way could defend in space) and Kukoc a good offensive weapon who has no D, no foot speed, no lateral quickness and also can’t guard in space. The only other guy with D that can guard in space would be Randy Brown was playing 8 minutes a game in the finals. Even if he got more minutes that’s less offense. They have 4 total players that could defend in space and Rodman could guard certain players in space but him guarding away from the basket hurts them. Even though the bulls at times picked up full they were not built to defend 3 line in regularly with more athletes on the floor than ever, more players on the floor that would shoot, that would handle and dealing with more spacing than they could imagine. The size of perimeter players increases tremendously as today’s players are best equipped to defend today’s game. When this bulls squad played there was probably 15 big guards which is why at times smaller guards had to guard Mj. Most small forwards back then could not guard in space. Pull up some old games and see how much weaker the D was. It wasn’t as sophisticated and the bulls were an athletic team but they only had a few athletes. Now every team has 7, 8, 9, 10 athletes. The bulls never faced anything like any of these teams. Kerr wouldn’t even be playing 20 minutes cause he would get cooked and he himself admits he couldn’t play today. If Harp is only playing 19 min a game in the finals (23 min a game regular season) he’s not equipped to guard these dudes in space. No matter how good anyone’s defense is from the past or any team in general, if you have to deal with more athletes than ever, more skilled players than ever, more players on the floor that will shoot and handle than ever, more spacing than ever than your defense is going to take a hit. The league then had a few 3 pt shooters if that on the floor at the same time. Guys are doing unheard of things today. GHill was killin’ Pip & Mj cause they weren’t used to 6’8 dudes going right to left like a guard and he wasn’t a shooter. It’s like when they say how past players would ball today, yeah I’m offense but they’d be getting cooooked playing defense. Mchale was a great defender, today he gets cooked trying to guard dudes 3 line in. Past games show dudes getting 5 feet of air space INSIDE the 3 line. Pull up “Michael Jordan shows full repertoire vs Suns”, the defense is horrible. It doesn’t even look like the finals. They try to dog today’s defense but good O beats good D and this is by far way more overall talent than any time in the past. Everybody has a stepback, cross you up, more guys with size doing it. They’d be facing players doing things they never imagined. How do you kill dudes doing things you’ve never seen. 1 dude I’m the past shot a step back. Way more dudes shoot 3’s and at a better rate. Those that make excuses, nah, the 3 line was there a long time ago and true shooters shoot with range 3 line or not so I’m talking players as is not “if this…if that”. Mark Jackson retired in 04’, the most 3’s he made in a game was 5 in 89’….

The bulls would be hoopin’ but people putting too much on it. Undrafted dudes would be 1st & 2nd rd picks any time in the past. There’s 3rd, 4th options that would be 1st options in the past. Credit to Mugsey Bogues who started most of his 14 yrs and averaged 10 a game 3 separate years with no J but with no J and without extreme bounce ain’t no 5’3 dude playing today. People like Carmelo, Kemba, Younger Isaiah, John Wall would still be starters any time in the past. The bulls never saw a lot of this but these dudes have seen Kobe (Mj clone), Giannis a bigger Pippen with less shooting or a PG who’s bigger with more shooting. Every team has multiple 6’6, 6’8 & up guys to throw at Mj & Pip, not stop them but the bulls just have 3 dudes to throw bodies but again Rodman on the perimeter playing D on certain guys hurts them. While it’s a hypothetical these things laid out are facts. If a player can’t guard in space then no matter what era they’re in they can’t guard in space. The bulls would score more than they did but some of that is due to more scoring they would give up….

That 90s era Bulls team made me into a believer. I was a laker fan and hated the bulls. But after that 92’ Barcelona dream team, the magnitude of that team also changed. It was like watching the Beatles or Elvis on a weekly basis. No team has done that in the modern NBA. They were at the top so many years, never lost a series or an NBA title during their reign (with MJ of course)

And then if you had a quick small guard, they had Randy Brown who came off the bench. Or the early years they’d have BJ Armstrong. He did a heck of a job on Kevin Johnson in the 93 finals

Modern fans need to realize a few things. MJ was not a bad 3pt shooter, he just never practiced it and didn’t do it a lot because he didn’t want to. The fact is that as his career moved along, he got better and better from downtown. The player with the best 3pt shooting percentage in the NBA coaches the Warriors but he played for the 96 Bulls. And last but by no means least - imagine that you have the greatest scorers in NBA history playing in an era where there is hand checking, where the 7 footer is camped out under the basket waiting for you to drive the hoop, where the game is much more physical and then you take all that away while still letting him and Pippen shut down passing lanes and play the ambush defence they were so great at….. Sorry, but playing under the way the 96 rules were called - Bulls in 4. Playing under the current rules - Bulls in 3 with the league putting in a mercy rule and cancelling game 4.

The Bulls would physically wear down GS on offense, which would impact GSs offense. Imagine Curry having to guard MJ on the block over and over again. Kukoc would even have more of an impact in todays game. His impact would be much greater, like Kerr said.

Harper was woefully underrated in my view; he was an excellent defender. I think if the rules were 90’s rules where you could beat people up then no question the Bulls would be favored. Kerr knows more than me and he thinks that Bulls team would do well with current no-touch defending.

Seeing MJ dominate with pure athleticism from 91-93 was incredible, but to see Jordan with the 96 Bulls become a cerebral assassin, just dominate and debilitate the other teams' willpower was something else. What I don't think is talked about enough about that 72 win season: The way the Bulls would pace the game, toy with opponents like a cat with a mouse, make them think they stood a fighting chance at halftime-- and the Bulls would explode out of the gates in the 3rd quarter, scoring at will and shut them down defensively, and rack up such a lead, that it became customary that Jordan, Pippen and Harper would sit out most of the 4th quarter icing their knees and joking around on the bench. The 73 win GSW team was amazing... but they didn't have that level, that aura.

People also don't realize the psychology of the '96 Bulls. After MJ's humiliation by the Orlando Magic in the '95 playoffs, MJ came into the 95-96 season with a chip on his shoulders which paved the way for their 2nd three-peat.

And yet he was chosen 1st Team All-Defense during each of his three post-baseball years and finished 6th, 5th, and 4th (at age 35!) in the voting for Defensive Player of the Year, respectively, over those three seasons. That was the tactic that Phil and his staff taught him which is why they started winning championships. Everyone knew MJ could dominate from the opening tip to the final buzzer but the problem was that when he did that it meant his teammates never got a few good looks throughout the game so they could hit some shots and be confident/in the groove when "winnin' time" (as Magic would say) rolled around in the fourth quarter. What Money learned how to do was to get his points more _in the flow of the game_ while still keeping his teammates involved too. THEN they were ready when the time came to hit a big shot as, say, Kerr did in the '97 Finals. "... he had been back just as long if not longer than hed been back from the foot injury in 86 b4 scoring 63pts against Boston." A man's body bounces back _way_ faster from injury/inactivity at age 23 than it does at 33. "He never regained those handles which orlando exploited the deterioration of in 1995..." The only thing deteriorating is your memory. All Orlando "exploited" was the fact that they were lucky enough to be facing a 60% MJ rather than a 100% MJ. By the 1996 season he was back to 100% and we all know how that went.

As a Pacers fan, I was looking forward to finally getting past the ECF; we ("we") had taken the Knicks & Magic both to 7 games, and as far as I was concerned, it was now OUR turn. And the Pacers were the only team to beat the Bulls twice that season, including a win at Chicago on I think the final day of the regular season, so I was thinking that the Pacers represented the only chance against that juggernaut. And then we choked in the first round to Atlanta.

Indiana beat Chicago on the Bulls' 2nd to last regular season game that year... By then, the Bulls had locked up the best record in the NBA, and probably didn't give their full effort in that game.. The Bulls would've still beat Indiana if they played in the 1996 playoffs. No one was going to beat the Bulls in a best of 5 or best of 7 series that year.

86 Celtics 50 and 1 at home. That team could play any style they wanted. Small ball with small or big guys. Big team passing running. Golden State forget it. Inside game KD gets eaten up. Great video! Indeed...I grew up in Chicago during that time. The Bull's Deerfield Multiplex where they practice was 15 min from where I lived making autographs easy. Today's culture with social media and iPhones will never understand a world without all of that where the Bulls not only became the "culture" of Chicago but they were the hottest show on the planet from here to China! They were a cool basketball team like Golden State. They were the Beatles, the Stones, etc. Lots of sports fans know that Golden State team but the WHOLE WORLD knew the Chicago Bulls with Jordan, Pippen and Rodman. The games were so much more intense than those today where they step over half court and send up a bomb. ...and the fans at a Bulls game, a standing room only ROCK CONCERT! They weren't a great game to watch, the Bulls were an "experience" to be had! It is not just that Golden State didn't compare, no sports team in history has ever compared to the cultural experience of the 96 Chicago Bulls.

It was an event for families to sit around the tv and watch MJ and the Bulls play for championships. Even people that didnt watch the NBA. Showed up to watch the Bulls. That was my experience back then. And no team is beating the 96 bulls in a series. Not even close. That's just my humble opinion watch the teams back then. And all the way to now. I just recently tried to watch a full game and was shocked. Of how the game is played now. Very little teams play any defense. And everyone just hangs out around the 3pt line. Waiting to get the rock. To just launch up trash. Rebound and kick it right back out. That was most of the whole game. Crazy

I remember, starting to watch NBA when I was around 10/12 ( 1986/1988). I lived in Spain and there was no Internet. I could only watch the highlights on sunday morning on a B channel. I didn't get to watch The Bulls enough to judge for myself, so, knowing some of that team's talents, I will take people's word enough to not argue with anybody. I will state that I would like be able to see them play against the 86 Celtics. I think it would be a great game. With a healthy Walton, and Bird, playing together, they were a passing game nightmare against all teams, plus great shooters, with a talented bench, rim protection and defense. It would be a barn burner, I believe. Conjecture only, I know, but interesting to imagine. Regardless of the teams, I miss that type of basketball, greatly.

It is VERY important to understand which rules are being used. If we're talking '90s rules with hand checking and physicality, the Bulls win without question. With today's rules, it is closer, but the Bulls probably still pull it out. I agree with Kerr. Everyone overlooks Kukoc, he'd be a killer in today's game; however, everyone also overlooks Kerr. In today's game, Kerr is the starting point guard and he fires volume threes.

Everyone under plays how great of a player Harper was at both ends of the court. He never got to play on a great team till 96. And Rodman's defense and rebounding are amazing, but he was a true garbage man. No one throws their body around diving for the ball like Rodman. Not to mention 10ft and in he had sweet jump shot. Kukoc was probably the 3rd best player on the team behind Jordan and Pippen easily. He was completely under rated. And Luc Longley was a solid and very smart center and could hold his own. Though Goldstate didn't play a true center it would through off the Golden state Defense with how quickly Chicago could move the ball around. Not to mention the bench talent on Chicago was far superior to who Golden State had coming off the bench. They would run Golden State ragged by the 3rd game.

'96 Bulls had probably one of the best if not the best defences in NBA history. They also had to play personal defence due to illegal defence rule. They were good individually and as a team. GS on the other hand has only Green who would deal with a tough guy Rodman, this is something that Draymond has never experienced even remotely. GS is also highly dependent on the jumpshot percentage wich will sink like never before. Scoring efficiency of GS will arguably degrade, while Warriors cannot offer anythng against Bulls in defence.

The 1995-96 Chicago Bulls had three one-point losses in March and April (two at home to the Charlotte Hornets and Indiana Pacers and one on the road to the Toronto Raptors). Had the Bulls won those three games, they would've been 75-7 during the regular season including being undefeated at home at 41-0. They also could've been 90-10 with a 51-0 home record in both the regular season and postseason. Curry would only score an average of 15 MAYBE 18-20 against this Bulls team. Switching between Jordan and Harper guarding him would cause him all sorts of headaches and difficulties. Randy Brown off the bench would also be a huge headache for Curry, since Brown was one of the best defensive guard specialist role players in the league. Pippen and Kucoc on the wings would disrupt him as well, and both of them were great at playing the passing lanes as well… Kerr was a competent defender as well, though not amazing. Curry and Durant would be productive, but it would be a rough day at work. Really the only one who might struggle a bit would be Longley, but if he got any rhythm within 15 feet, he’d also be dangerous. With 90s rules? Total sweep. With 2020 rules? That Bulls team still shines because of the mastery of the triangle and the movement associated with it. Jordan, Pippen, and Harper were all very competent 3 point shooters, but neither focused on it, and the game back then kind of discouraged it. Kerr was a total sniper at 3 point and Kucoc was a GREAT 3 point shooter. With the 2020 rules, that made Jordan, Pippen, Harper, Kucoc, and Kerr even more dangerous offensively. At best, Warriors are winning 1 game with 2020 rules.

Steve Kerr was a bench player with the 96 Bulls. He wasn’t really even the 6th man. In today’s NBA, he’s a starter with the smaller lineups and his ability to shoot the 3 ball. MJ would be even more unstoppable without the hand checking. Scottie would be Scottie, Kukoc, with his size and ability to shoot from anywhere would be unstoppable. Harper would be more dangerous offensively and just as good defensively. Denis Rodman is the one that would have trouble in this era because of who he is more than what he was. His antics could get him in even more trouble than it did in the 90’s and he’d get T’d out of games so often he’d become a shell of himself.
