In China and other Asian countries, they are very community oriented and would not do that, as opposed to many Americans who are more individually motivated. Not saying one is better or worse, they just have a different way of viewing the world. That said, traditional small American neighborhoods used to also behave this way as well but somewhere along the way that has become lost. I dont know why.

"Let the sun do its work..." LoL, every person lived in Nanjing knows how that's going to work out during the rainy season at the beginning of the summer. I used to hate lingering odor from drying clothes indoors during the season. Now that moldy and wet smell becomes a profound part of my memory of Nanjing.

Cool video, drying the clothes in the air is a very good nature way to save energy, reduce carbon foot print. And also it is the better way to prevent the clothes from damage during spinning inside tumble dryer. The clothes can last longer.

We do that in India too. But, it has a problem. You have to look for if outside is too hot then cloth's colour can fade away. I am just too lazy to do that and leave them there unless the clothes are my favorite and expensive. 😂😂

The parks in China are really good for the elderly. It really promotes healthy lifestyle when old you need the physical activities and exercise to keep healthy. BTW the apartment courtyard is really beautiful. It looks so natural and peaceful

In the US, the ice cream freezers would probably be emptied and the cash box would vanish. That would have been the end of the ice cream store. We used to live in an apartment in Maryland and a neighbor often stole our newspapers from our front door.

Whenever my parents would visit me in Shenzhen, the reoccurring questions were..."Where's the shower curtain? "Do you want to go out and buy one?" So it became a long-standing joke. Pet birds is an older generation hobby. My parents used to have a pair of beautiful parrots. I ended up freeing them "by accident" . Now they live in the trees outside of my parents apartment and came back to feed from time to time.

That’s so interesting that they still live nearby and didn’t fly off elsewhere. 😝 My family has the reverse of your story. Someone else’s pet lovebird escaped or was set free and showed up at our bird feeders and kept clinging to our window screen as though he wanted to be brought inside . We let him in and got him a cage in our kitchen. he never ever left the cage , even with the door open , he was a house bird for life , hahaha.

it's a good sign in Chinese tradition if birds nesting in your house :) the little forest outside of my parents apartment has a few big pine trees that provide nuts and I saw other exotic birds besides the two I freed. Together, they never failed to wake me up early in the morning when I went home, lol

Referring to the California's spate of large scale robberies in those crowded stores, where there were also tons of cctv surveillant cameras in them, couldn't even deter or stop the criminals in their tracks of "daylight" robberies! Now I am the more convinced that the "camera surveillance system" of PRC and her "facial recognition" technology ARE SECONDARY to the Honour System, and the dignity and pride of the CHINESE citizens have in themselves living in an affluence society today!

Hhahah the dryer thing. I'm in canada and my family hangs their clothes too. But in the basement near the furnace. We used to hang them outside. We have a dryer but only use it for emergencies.

The outdoor fitness equipments actually do exist in the US, just not as common. They are along a fitness trail in a little village I live in, population 2,500. The heating lights in the ceiling also exist in the US. In some very old homes, 100 years or so. The heating system consists of the boiler (albeit a natural gas fueled newer one) and radiators. So the bathrooms are not warm enough. Hence the heating lights in the ceiling. I do enjoy living in the sticks in the US as an immigrant. I'm not a fan of a suburban life.

In the states the shower is usually built by applying concrete mortar over the subfloor, with a shower pan liner embedded for additional water proof. We are remodeling our home in New Jersey because if the shower pan expired, you can get water damage on the downstairs ceiling, and wooden subfloor becomes rotten and you can get mold. Black mold can be dangerous for children.

For your shower, there's a barrier you can get, maybe a few inches tall, that you can stick on the floor around the shower area to keep the water from getting out. I remember my grandparent's apartment in Beijing had one.

Okay: let´s share. Some houses have a tube in which they throw the dirty clothes. It lands in the washing machine room in the bottom. People here use dryers. Or they hang clothes outside if they have a garden. In cold countries, we have "air room" as to save energy. Sometimes rats enter them. How? a mystery. Many people plant in high plantations in their garden and thry to be a bit autonomous. This is close to or inside cities. In the mountains everywhere. You ll find high plantations made of metall, or wood.

Explanation: the light in bathroom is necessary because in Nanking area, winter is cold but no heat system installed as in USA or northern China. 2 the separate bath area is common in apt built in recent years. 3 hanging clothes is actually more eco friendly. When I was in states, I also not happy with the dryer which damage the clothes.

Actually, Chinese people's eyes could be actually less sensitive. I did my material science class final project on the chemical that determines the color of the eye. It turns out it's the same as the chemical that changes skin color, which basically protects the eye from UV light called melanin. I have been in the US for two years and I don't understand why everyone, wears sunglasses, all the time! I used to think it was because in the US people are less willing to show their eyes and show vulnerabilities (which I think I have my point). But I guess also eye colors can be at play too. Just my thought.

still, gotta say: dryers and dishwashers are the greatest appliances i found in the US. i keep screaming to my mom to get (at least the dryer) them back at home in Nanjing. especially during summer when the climate gets too humid for clothes to dry naturally. plus the heat from a dryer can kill most bacteria

I'd love to live in a complex like that. Are Chinese people very social?. I mean here (France) you don't have that kind common space, so people usually go to Cafés and bars. Stray cats are very common here, when I came here I got surprised how kindly cats are treated. It's very common that my cat goes to eat to my neighbors homes. That's the way my second cat adopted me, she began to eat my first cat food and decided to sleep here. Every two or three years the government catches them (stray cats), sterilize them, checks their health and releases them again (if they're healthy)

I was thinking that maybe it is not such a good idea to have a fish pond running through the different buildings in the complex. It would attract mosquitoes unless the water is not static but actually moving like a small river.

The water seems to be pretty mosquito free since there are several different types of fish in there not just the koi , so mosquito larvae would probably get eaten before they would hatch 🦟

Interesting, the apartment complex is really similiar to what we have in Sweden in that there is a central park and everything. Not too often you see that in certain towns here. China is a lot bigger though, probably cause it's a lot more dense

Katherine, there are two other key differences indoors: (1) the stove in a US kitchen is mostly electrical but is mostly using gas in China (2) almost all US homes have a big oven but that is extremely rare in China.

my first stove in china was like a first love of mine, they are so much more powerful and superior to gas stoves in US! it was in my first apartment which was massive bargain for rent (so certainly not as nice as the one in this video haha) and overall pretty shoddy, when we went to see the unit the last tenants had completely DESTROYED the stove like beyond recognition so it was replaced by the management there before moving in… best surprise ever, it blew my mind when i first moved in (after cooking on hotplate in dorm for some time ha) the flame is huge and boiled anything so quickly, all the sudden i could whip up vegetable soup in what seemed like no time，that stove was SO MUCH more efficient to use than any stoves in the US… when i came back to US to visit my parents eventually, i tried to boil something on their american gas stove it seemed to take so long i genuinely thought i was losing my mind, could not believe it had always just been like that!
