Again, great video. Many thanks. Although born in China, I have never been in Hainan. My longest one day bike trip (old Chinese styled one speed bike) was from Shanghai to Jiaxing (嘉兴 where CPC was founded), a little more than 100 km one way. My longest multi day bike trip was from Shanghai to Suzhou (苏州) to Wuxi (无锡) and back to Shanghai . That was in early 1980s before you were born I think.

Katherine, I am happy to see that you successfully took a lone bike trip to off-beaten places in China. I am curious to know whether you really did take that bike trip all by yourself? If you did, throughout that trip, did any of the local guys/men try to hit on you? I know for a fact that a foreign woman biking alone in other Asian countries like the Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc will attract a lot of unwanted attentions from local guys/men. I would highly appreciate your honest experience. Thank you and keep on trucking!

@@kats_journey_east Honestly, it's so refreshing to know that you can confirm that you took that entire trip alone and was not harassed which, as I have mentioned, would have been the case in many Asian (and other) countries. Thank you very much for your quick reply and I will pass your videos to some people (female) who have concerns about their safety in China if they travel alone. Keep up with your great work and videos. P/S: "Journey to the East". Very good & innovative title coz it reminds people of that epic "Journey to the West" saga.

Nice one, as always. The other vlogger was right about Hainan children and bikes but I think it goes deeper than that. We have noticed that children in Hainan seem to be under far less pressure than children up north, there is also a lot less mobile phone usage, at least until they are teenagers. I heard all the hellos today and the excuse a me! My response to the latter would be "why, what have you done?" but that is usually not understood. I did respond to a hello yesterday, heard a few metres after I passed them of course. I went back and asked why they waited until I had gone by. One of the three answered, in perfect English, "my English is not very good"! PS Are the other bike vloggers riding expensive bikes?

Hainan's tropical climate & country side is nice, very similar to those in Malaysia where I live. And yes, the Chinese here too, like to burn paper houses, cars, TVs etc. to their beloved departed ones. A friend told me that once, he even burnt a paper iPhone for his late father and when the friend's phone ranged that very midnight, he dared not answer the call. Hahaha.

Those abandoned houses in countryside have owners. They usually moved to cities. They will come back to claim compensation if relocation happens. In China, farmers don't pay anything for their residence land lot. They only need to file some application forms if they want to build a house. Of course, one farmer family can only get one lot. there are limits on size of lots, but not strict. Farmers usually take larger size of land than allowed.

@Johnson Li Oh... not really... it is actually very well developed already. As Katherine said, she is in the countryside and she is just showing the rural part of the island only. For a sub tropical island it is good to retain some of the original charm and beauty, not only of the place but the people and even the animals as Katherine has shown! China develops so super fast. You can't recognize the place just in one short year, not to mention five years later, so yes, even here it will change like mad. In the video, even in villages, you can also see that new big houses being built and upgraded. Those parts that are untouched are probably left so deliberately.

Thank you for sharing another bike tour of yours. Through your videos, one can also see there is plenty of places in China which are "very" rural looking. Yes, indeed, that's a bit overwhelming of Hellos. In addition to your different appearance from those locals, I think many probably see your attractive appearance too. Some Chinese are funny or even can appear a bit strange, and I guess that's not peculiar to the Chinese, so they may say something to someone who looks different from what they are more familiar which they normally would not have expressed in their daily life.
