To the point where I was barely able to stick with it at first. But he does grow a lot, and the character development is worth it. Same thing for this show.

I think the "boobs dream" thing is brilliant in its simplicity. Because that's what a 16-year-old boy who hasn't had any kind of relationship with a girl (or in general with anyone) would realistically aspire to. Often the protagonists of the anime have idealistic and noble dreams, but Denji is much closer to a real guy than they are.

Exactly, he doesn't know enough of life to say "I want someone in my life who really knows and loves me." He's literally never had that. At any point. His mother died at a young age and ever since then it's been a succession of men using him and him surviving as best as he can.

Denji's royally messed up in the head. He's been basically starved since he was a kid, he had no social life and no one to care for him so him being a teenager and his hormones raging out of control get him to desire the more "baser" things. He's still a kid. When Denji talks about Demons he's always thinking about Pochita, who was a relatively "good" demon. Every other demon we've seen is out and out evil and that's why Power (who is a demon that's controlling a dead person's corpse) is considered 'rational' She's not just out there murdering folks for her own pleasure. She can take instructions and listen, but she still has her own base desires as a Demon.

Denji is an intentionally comedic but highly philosophical character that breaks down Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Denji has lived at the bottom. He only now has been given his physiological needs of food and water. His safety is being supported by Makima protecting him from execution and Aki giving him shelter. What comes next? Belonging and Love, which also includes sexual desire and intimacy. He is slowly working his way up. Things like his own esteem, morals, status, aesthetics, and self-actualization aren’t even thoughts in his head yet. Why would they? He’s never had time to dwell on those things when each meal was a struggle to scrape up. Also he is slowly fulfilling every dream he established in the first episode. Eating toast with jam, getting cleaned up, having a bigger place to live. And then another was getting laid. He acknowledges he doesn’t feel capable of getting into a sexual relationship with someone, but 2nd Base feels attainable. And Denji is determined to live all the dreams he told Pochita about.

Denji is a product of his environment. No family, no friends, shitty home, hounded by debt from the Yakuza and forced to sell his own body parts. He's a good protagonist, and it's pretty clear why he is how he is. Whether you find the sexual jokes funny or not is secondary. They're showing you this stuff because that is Denji. This is how he thinks.

Basically, Denji is a character who had nothing except a genuine bond with his dog. When he loses that, he is given everything he wished for in his miserable earlier life, but if it pleases him, it does not make him happy. A big part of the story is Denji finding new goals and trying to understand what it is that will bring him happiness, what will make his life worth Pochita's sacrifice. So he tries different things, with this slightly alien perspective, this rabid obsession for everything new and this hope that he will understand what drives people and give their life a meaning. Also, no, Denji is not rapey. Yes, his flaws will be studied further later on. No his horniness is not the main focus of the story, but it is an important one in the beginning (so likely a big part of the first season). A big theme of the manga is the general meaningless of lust when there is no genuine relationship to go with it. To cite another internet user: "An underappriciated aspect of Chainsaw Man is how sexually mature it is. Despite it using a lot of erotic appeal early on in the series, nearly all of it is consensual. There is no [main character] accidently slipping into a pair of milkers for a gag or fanservice. in fact, it straits up rejects the idea of a sexual fantasy with no emotional investments or engagement to commit to. That is wild to me because we're talking about a shonen manga. So it's basically telling adolescent teens and young adults that lust is a hollow and meaningless thing to go after." Finally, I'm glad you guys liked the designs, I think it's one of my favourite things about the series. Hope you will watch the whole season, but if not, well, it is what it is. Denji is as weird as an almost savage teenage boy would be in his position. If something, Denji not being more deranged is kinda impressive. He`s not an assaulter, tho. He's all about consent. The thing is that Denji thinks of sex in such a unhealthy way but not really because of the action itself, but intimacy. In the end, you really understand that what he really craves for is to have someone to care over and care for him. But even him haven't realized that yet (not even now in the manga).

Denji is a kid who grew up without the basic needs that a child needs to function well in society. What we have like food, relationships ( platonic or romantic) a roof over our heads is paradise to him and while desire for such simple things is shallow and humorous to us it's his goal to experience the things that normal shonen protags would have at the start of their story. It's his goal to experience basic needs that a human boy his age should have experienced by now.

I would disagree. Denji is unlike other shonen mcs because he begins his story with being manipulated. He doesn’t have freedom at all and therefore his idea of life is listening to others. He doesn’t know what he wants or what he should want so every goal of his is simple minded and short term, and he makes them all seem big because it gives him a little sense of freedom/purpose.

I didn't read the manga (no spoilers please), but as I understand it Denji is moving up the hierarchy of needs in his life. In the first chapter he was struggling to cover his survival needs, in this chapter he goes up to the next step: pleasure. I guess the next step will be to bond with other people beyond superficial interest. The basics no longer worry him and he can indulge himself. In the end he wonders what guides the others because "they already have everything." And that question was also asked in the first chapter, so I guess it will be the central theme of his character arc. The interesting thing is the perspective of someone who never had anything, so I don't agree with you when you say that instead of the poor boy who is experiencing the small pleasures of life, you would prefer the woman who treats him like a dog as the protagonist.

I think yall legit forgot about his actual storyline and how he grew up with no foundation at all. His mom died from a heart disease when he was a very young or newborn age lol. They said that in ep 1 but u guys prolly forgot. His dad hung himself with huge amount of debt.... He had no one in his life to tell him what is right or what is wrong. No moral compass/standard. He also told Aki (the guy with his balls kicked in) that he never went to school ever...Denji was so poor that he had to sell his actual organs to stay alive. He never had great human interaction because he always smelt bad and had blood on him from getting into devil fights. BTW, he said this in the car when he was with Makima, so all this was said. Im surprised u guys forgot how bad he had it lol. Thats the reason why he looks at women the way that he does now. Man is mad horny because of ALL these issues he had in his life created no woman to ever come close to him. The way he acts clearly makes sense and is kinda justifiable for now. Until someone actual teaches him what's wrong and right in life, how to treat people with respect, and how to not get in trouble with other people, its pointless at this very moment. Don't worry. Denji has an amazing growth as a character. Remember he spent almost all of his life isolated, with no human affection or attention whatsoever, so he DOESN'T have a clear view on what's good and what's bad, what's right or wrong. Throughout the series, we'll be seeing how Denji starts to realize that his ultimate goal wasn't something sexual, but rather love, acceptance and the attention he never received. You'll see that specially reflected in his relationship with Power. It starts with him watching her as an "opportunity", and slowly turns into the absolute most wholesome relationship in the entire show. In summary, don't worry, they do address his horny problem, so no need to be so crystal delicate on your reactions.

It's funny how the girl in this is so naive and thinks Denji is messed up and they try to reason it partly with his age, when in reality that's how most man think (not only teenagers), even your boyfriend. @@Tyhar93 did you forget the whole final arc? The show indeed punishes him for being the way he is and he actually grows, maybe not too much as other MCs but he does grow. He started off as a guy that no cares about anything or anyone aside of himself to actually care about people and his friends and even his 'ultimate goal' of touching boobs changes. His relationship with Power at the end of part 1 is proof enough that Denji got outta his mindset of being horny 24/7 like he was at the beginning of the story

the main thing about Denji's goals are very simple things in life that people who grew up with a normal life wouldn't think about as goals. In first episode his dream was just to be able to eat bread with jam because he can barely afford to buy a piece of bread. Him wanting to touch boobs shows how he's just a hormonal teenager but at the same time shows how much he feels like him wanting big things like "happy stable life" is way too impossible as a goal or is something that he feels he isn't allowed to have

Denji is extremely layered in his simplicity. He's a deprived and fucked up kid that experiences all these things for the first time. He's always relied on his survival instinct so why wouldn't he go with his carnal desires first? Denji is a character that gets under-appreciated the first watch but with the second watch he clearly is the heart of the show.

Denji's development is slow in the manga idk how they would show it on the anime but it's so worth it 💕 he grows up a lot and learns so many things. Yes, it's a weird journey but that's CSM, nothing is normal there. But the manga is so loved for a reason not bc were horny perverts 😅 but bc we understand denji's mental state and how the hayakawa family helped him a lot through everything. It's gonna get weirder so be prepared bc the moment you think yk what's happening that you're just watching a weird show, they will hit you with the saddest scenes ever and break your heart.

Great reaction guys! I can totally get it if Chainsaw Man isn't your thing, it's a great and very nuanced series but it's absolutely not everyone's cup of tea. One small thing I will say about the series is... don't go in expecting much morality from the characters. The reader/viewer is arguably the most moral person involved in the experience, everyone else is various levels of messed up emotionally and mentally.

So unlike other, like all other, shonen protagonist, Denji has had the worst life you can imagine. I never went to school, his dad was abusive, he hasn't had a parent since he was like 7, he had to sell organs(those numbers were in yen. So 100,000 yen is like a few hundred dollars). He has never had any of the basic life necessities and he is young and going through puberty. If you catch all the way up in the manga, he is just now getting to the point at which all other protagonist start their adventure or journey on. It's really sad. And this is an absolutely brutal manga. He isn't skeevy. His goal is also still changing, but in the first ep he states his goal while being stabbed to death. He wants a normal life and also had no idea what normal even is. He is the one you will be rooting for. I mean, this anime wouldn't have been this sought out so hard for a creepy main character and a kid and skeevy anime. Honestly, if this is too much right now, idk how y'all will handle the brutality of this show. Like, it's hopeful but depressing. The dog stuff isn't a kink. He has been treated like a beaten dog his whole life and has never been shown any kindness except for Ponchita.

Denji is not a kind of protagonist with a noble spirit but purely a teenager with miserable childhood who only wants a "normal life" while he doesn's even know what it is. Makima is a person who treated him with some piece of affection for the first time in his life, so yea, his inclination to her is understandable. I mean he is super special as a chainsaw man, but as a human what he is like at this point is so average, purely honest and even naive, and this contrast makes him more loveable and interesting.

So here’s why I didn’t mind denji’s boob and sex obsession at this point in the show. The surrounding context for it made perfect sense to me. Especially in retrospect when you learn other details. One, he has been on his own since before puberty, so literally no positive role model in his life to guide him. Two, he had no one else human in his life, so he’s not even familiar with social norms since the only company he really had was Pochita. He doesn’t understand that his dreams come off as creepy or taboo. Three, he’s only scraped by up until this point and so his goals make sense that they are small and ridiculous. I liked that he started sorta at the bottom in terms of character, because it means the story has a lot of potential for how it can grow. Plus it’s kinda hilarious😂. Edit: there’s also lots of parallels to denji being like a dog so there’s that too, he’s not going be as sophisticated right off the bat.

Yeah, things like that are a trope in anime. The depiction here is actually pretty tame compared to some others. People who are familiar with anime might get a chuckle out of it, but most regular anime watchers won't be phased by stuff like this. It's definitely weird and probably shouldn't be played up for laughs, but it's kind of been normalized already. In this show at least, it's not meant to be seen as non-consensual.

You guys gotta give denji credit, he is basicly a teenager that had his entire childhood reversed, Like he had to work and kill before he got into puberty, and now after all that, loosing his best friend he gets a "home" where he is being cared for, getting fed, getting affaction and all that. + you have to remember what he said in the first episode, like there is some truth to it, that people always want more. This episode gave a lot of contrast to the last one, We got Denji´s backstory to kind of make up for how he is now, desperate for love and stuff without pochita. We have Aki, who is totally contrasting to denji, he is distant and "seeks revenge", hiding his inside feelings. Makima, we only get the boob "jokes" (btw, if you are thinking about it it really isn´t a joke) from denjis vision, why are we focusing on it so much?
