I think you'll get a better opinion of Denji from the next episode onwards. Imo, it's quite normal to find Denji pathetic at this stage.. Without spoiling, i just wanna say that it's fair to consider the possibility that his attitude about the things that bother you most may change. After all, as you said, he is still emerging from a dingy and pathetic life. It's fair enough for him to need some time to adjust to life in society and to know how to differentiate his real needs from the more irrelevant ones. However, I understand your criticism of the way Denji referred Power only as " tits " at the end of the episode. But it is because Denji will not always have the same vision and the same goal regarding women, that we can say that this anime does not denigrate them.

It also helps debunk the whole idea that CSM in general is belittling to women given how incredibly written the women in this story are, though given how this is only episode 3 I can understand the concern. It may show that immature outlook from the perspective of a single character right now but the difference lies in who they actually are outside of Denji's own limited perspective bubble and how deeply they are explored as characters as the story progresses.

So about the cucumber devil last episode, if you remember correctly, someone called for help in a phone booth. Guessing that because of the ‘call’, the person on the side of phone called dibs on the devil. Edit: the guy that calling on the phone booth is civilian devil hunter. He call for back up and power just jump and kill the devil on her own. He called dibs.

The chapter deals with how two people completely alien to the human world and who do not know how to relate to others, in the end if they manage to understand each other thanks to the love for their pets and begin to create a bond of friendship. Well denji isn't seen as a human in the show he's seen as a dog. So why would power be seen as a "human girl" and not as boobs just to make you relate to her (even tho she is treated as a character, don't forget that we are talking about the third episode we are not talking about a full season of character development yet)

About appealing to a female audience, it should be noted Chainsaw Man is a Shonen Manga from Shonen Jump, Shonen means something like few years which stands for something like young boy. So aimed usually at guys at some age from 9-18. The one targeting girls are called Shojo.

The fact still is that the leading Shonen Manga has this part of Chainsaw Man, and it has always officially been listed as Shonen despite some people who may want it otherwise. CSM I think clearly falls into this category maybe even more so due to the sexual female connotations it has (which appeals to a male audience), but Shonen has always had fighting series like Chainsaw Man even in the 90's and onwards which falls in line with them, so we agree to disagree there.

Last episode, right before Power killed the sea cucumber devil, we saw a civilian devil hunter right next to it in a phone booth "claiming" it and calling for reinforcements; Denji couldn't have seen him and Power probably didn't either (and wouldn't have cared if she had), but Makima seems to be implying that they should've assessed the situation before going in guns blazing (or hammer crashing, as it were), which is not totally unreasonable given that the sea cucumber devil (who _is_ afraid of sea cucumbers anyway?) didn't seem to be particularly threatening any bystanders at the time... (And yeah, she could have told them earlier, but this way we got to learn about Power last episode and got this exposition anyway in this one, and them not having been told is a passable excuse for them not getting in trouble this once, so I think it does work quite well this way from a narrative standpoint...)

I agree on what you were saying about the Sea Cucumber devil though, the show never really clarified what devils they could and couldn't go after. My assumption is that they were sent out to patrol but not actually instructed to *fight* devils. If they saw one, I'm guessing they had to report back as opposed to fighting it on the spot. That said, the show doesn't outright state that, so who knows. Great reaction though guys, definitely my favourite channel for CSM reactions!

Devil Hunting really is *that* common in this world that Public Safety doesn't always have the right to do what they please against Devils. Little late to the video but I nevertheless enjoy your reactions. I love the way you feel about Denji and the others in the main cast. I also enjoyed the breakdown and discussion after the video. I prefer when people have complicated opinions about characters because watching it only creates better reactions. PSI: I always hate how people say Denji is one of the best main characters (in manga/anime) and if you don’t like him you don’t understand him. I always find that so hard to agree with. I love to see what y’all think of Denji at the end of the season.

It’s kinda frustrating to see so many manga readers, who already know the plot and character development, immediately jump to the comment section to not only aggressively defend their favorite character but also push their opinions and tell ppl that their different impressions regarding the character are wrong and should be fixed. Flaws can make a character interesting, but not liking certain flaws about interesting characters is entirely understandable and natural. And to be honest, I totally see why some first-time viewers may find Denji’s fixation about boobies a bit worrisome. In a lot of Japanese anime, there are these “funny pervert” characters whose questionable actions are presented as comic relief. Some anime even paint it to be a “ridiculous but lovable trait”. There are people who think that’s icky or simply do not find it funny. There’s this weird trend online that dismiss them as sensitive snowflakes, but their criticism is valid. At the same time, I’m not trying to criticize people that enjoy those contents. At this point in Chainsaw Man, anime-only viewers can’t be sure if this anime is going to be that kind of anime or if it’ll try to approach the subject differently. Nerdy Nightly’s discussion is great, and I can’t wait to experience the rest of this anime with them.

there's plenty of devils coming soon for S1. Unfortunately, S1 will only be 12 or 13 eps, so they won't show certain devils. S2 will have groundbreaking devils that just make ur jaw drop. Honestly, I have felt like the boobs thing is being emphasized a bit more in the anime. Most of the boob stuff goes away tbh. It’s kinda sad because the sexual frankness kinda kept me away at first. I find the manga is strikingly good about not over-sexualizing the female characters outside of the context of Denji’s perceptions or actual erotic situations. I find some other manga I’ve have an ambient sexualization that can feel voyeuristic rather than characterizing.

The female characters in the story are much more psychologically dangerous than the male characters 😅 16 year old Denji is very simple. Denji’s “boob” goal wraps up and is finished if you can make it through episode 5.
