I always wanted to be a bodybuilder. When I was little my uncle competed in competitions and I remember looking at all these men on stage and I thought they looked like supermen. I wanted to be that. Working out became my passion. I spent so many months building my body. I spent so many hours looking at myself in the mirror. Always being hard on myself. This should be bigger or I could push this further. Being better every week gave me a reason to live. I thought I was on top of the world. Then life hit me like a train. I had a serious car accident that nearly cost me my left ear, arm and eye. The nurse told me it was a miracle that I didn't die. Thankfully a team of surgeons were able to save them. 2 years later ive had 4 surgeries and months of rehabilitation. Let me tell you the rehab hurt more than the surgery. Years of laying in a bed left me a holo shell of the man I used to be. All my hard work had left me and so did the desire to do anything. I gained weight. I barely had movement in my arm. My mother had to help me shower and put my clothes on. I felt useless. A waste of space. What kind of man can't even tie his shoes by himself. I was half a man. I thought my life was always going to be this. One day I'm getting into the shower and I pass myself in the mirror so I back track. I pose myself like I used to. It didn't look like me. I wasn't myself. Then I told myself I want to be normal guy again. That's all I wanted, just to feel like a normal person. I started pushing myself harder in rehab. It felt like I wasn't making any progress but I kept at it. Just trying gave me a reason to live. I had a reason to get out of bed so I kept going. Months and months go by and I wasn't noticing anything but the people all around me did. I felt like they were just telling me stuff I wanted to hear. I come home to shower after a long day at the rehab center and I pass by the same mirror. I see progress. After so long there it is in front of my eyes. That's where I made a choice. I don't want to be normal I say to myself. I want to be better than this. I'm not the biggest nor can I life the most in the gym anymore. I don't have anything that I used to. The weights feel heavier and the exercises take my breath so much quicker now. I accept I'm not the same guy I used to be. No I'm stronger now. I been hit by life. I took the punches and I'm going to get back up and try again.

Thank you so much for creating this video. I had two knee surgeries in the last month to fix meniscus and ACL tears. As a life long athlete, I was crushed and depressed initially. I lost 10lb of lean muscle and couldn't see the way out... until I realized I'm no longer injured. I spent 12 months in pain, trying to grind through damaged knees, psychologically, I became "cripple" over those 12 months of daily chronic pain. Now, there's still some lingering pain and left over inflammation, but I'm working out 3-4 times a day and now able to do 15 parallel body weight squats without feeling any pain. its a long road ahead but I couldn't have done it with your help and the help of others who motivated me to bust my ass. Thanks again.

How are you now? I’ve had knee issues for several years, a doctor once told me MPFL surgery for both would be necessary in the future. In May I developed tendonitis, reinjured it from pushing the recovery time, and worsened it still having to walk around for work. My body forced me to stop and I’ve been in bed for a week, awaiting an MRI. They think the meniscus and something else are torn. I’m in a foreign country and losing my shit mentally as I’m a dancer and I miss moving my body. But I’m trying to stay positive that even if this requires surgery, I will come out stronger in the long run.

Two years ago in the gym, I was squatting too much weight and I got a herniated disc in my back, I felt the pains but I kept going in fears of people laughing at me for being 'weak'. I only found out 5 months ago that I had this injury, and thinking my back was fine I continued to workout, suffering both ankles and wrists spraining, my knees becoming extremely weak, and tearing my hamstring. After I went on a 13km hike, I knew something was wrong with my back, I couldn't move. The next day I got physio and heard this news, and found out that it would take the whole year to recover, seeing as it's been left for so long. I am currently on my way to recovery, it's been an emotional hurricane, as my physio tells me i need to be in the gym 4+ days a week, I felt my previous injuries resurface. Today I worsened my knee, and have a shin splint as a result of pushing myself too much. I have horrible tendinitis in both wrists, and my disc is still healing. Finding the motivation is so hard, as I'm only 16 and all I've ever wanted was to be active. I came from a broken home, and working out was my rock. It kept me sane. When I got injured over and over, the things that kept me going was, in fact, finding other passions. Something that could replicate the same euphoria i get when i work out. I found writing. Making art. Cooking. Yoga. All of which I can't do now because of my tendinitis. I'm basically on the verge of giving up. I have no one to support or encourage me to stay positive, because my mum has been chronically injured for 6+ years, and she is getting worse by the day. I really just want to feel normal again, and I really don't know what to do. Positivity seems like a rarity at this moment.

Jasmin Habib it’s tough to be patient when you’re in pain it robs your happiness and positivity but you just have to take it one day at a time and don’t rush it. I’m recovering from a herniated disc as well and for all of last summer I could barely get out of bed and walk around the house. I started eating healthy to lose weight because I could barely walk and eventually started swimming at the gym with a floating bouy between my knees only using my upper body and eventually I was able to kick and months went by and I could walk perfectly and jog again. It’s a slow process but treat your body right and listen to your body and be patient don’t give up

There are so many athletes who've comeback after worse injuries and had amazing careers. Just don't aggravate your injuries and try n replace your time in the gym with something that shapes you as a person - learn an instrument , read a book , meet new people. I've been out for a month now and this's what has kept me going. Hope we all comeback stronger.

Right now I'm dealing with severe lower back pain, and I might have a herniated disc, I can't enjoy working out without lower back pain, however I still squat and deadlift heavy, because powerlifting is my passion. That's what bring me happiness in my life, being a powerlifter takes away my loneliness my depression. However this video tear me up because at this point I don't know what to do now, I seen multiple chiropractor and massage therapy, taking medication as well but pain it's still there feel like giving up in life but this video motivate me to keep going. I hope everyone recover and go back to lifting

lost a lot of time from a very bad injury. got fat again. gained all the weight i cut & got weak as shit. initially lifting as more depressing than not lifting at all. gains come back pretty quickly and you can come back better than before. am cutting & am almost back where i was. if you do get injured. unlike me, do track your intake. dont just give up and eat your feels because you are depressed. you will regret it. if anything you should pay more attention to diet not less. and also a serious injury will humble you real fucking quick. i guarantee you will change the way you train and train smarter, you will focus on form, you will do stretches & mobility. because the thought of being in that much pain again will never leave you. ever.

I didn't quite expect this video to be so bloody helpful.. I'm sitting trawling my way through videos trying to find positivity and I came across this great wee speech. I tore my ACL, fractured tib and fib with cartridge damage in my right knee after an out of control skier crashed into the back of my early this season. I was angry and frustrated because there was nothing I could have done and was no way my fault.. So I got angry and did the "why me". I take my skiing pretty seriously and my heart was recently broken again when my physio told me I would have to miss next season as well.. All because some jackass didn't wanna pay for a lesson and tried to show off on an advanced run. I take what you say to heart because not only has motivation for my recovery diminished.. But so has my work, general mood and attitude because of anger. I'm gonna try my best to hold on to your powerful message and focus on something productive! Cheers Bro, nice pins!

Great message, Matty. I've ruptured my L4 L5 and had surgery, have a scarred bicep tendon, some impingement in my shoulder, and 3 fused vertebrae in my T spine. I took a 10 year break from lifting. I got back in the gym 7 months ago and it's the best thing I've ever done. Lower back pain is down 90% and I've gained 20 lbs since starting back. The mind can heal the body. You can overcome injury and set backs. Get a picture in your mind of what you want to look like or accomplish, and you're half way there. Keep the videos coming.

I just had a fall, hit the rd at 45 km coming out of a blind bend on a hill descent to find a car on the wrong side of the road.i was run of the road, thankful i found a gape and miss the car,but the bike washed out under my front wheel.the impact at 45km was harsh to say the least.lucky i was coming out of a bend and was traveling at less speed than the 75km coming into the corner.i was then very fortunate to only had got very minor injures, sprained shoulder, grazed cuts a concussion. But now i having to start a recovery process two month before a major competition.i did my first ten km run 5 day after the accident. It was slow painful 51mins of agony, but head my words of encouragement.set back are a part of any endeavor to achieve.it all about getting back up.today proved resolve and determination .keep motivated and have a positive mind set.if we can focus and program our minds to be becoming positive and not being thinking negative thought, but thinking positive constructive thoughts.anything is possible.believe we can and it will manifest into success.

Buddy no matter what people su about me, I’m in tears after watching this. 15 days ago I turned off my Achilles’ tendon... I’ve been suffering injuries ever since I was a young guy, 3 knees surgeries and now this one which is been really painful not only fiscally but mentally as well. Thank you for the inspiration I really want to face this with a different perspective cause right now I’m down the whole

Dealing with an injury right now. I Ruptured my Achilles 5 months ago to the date, and I don't see why people lose motivation. You learn a lot about yourself and your body, as well as your mental approach to life, and if that doesn't motivate you there is an issue. I never had a down day in these past 5 months and I really do put my recovery down to that positive attitude and my desire to want to come back. I deadlift and squat not too far off my PR's one year after doing it previously and with the injury, and dunked again for the first time today. If you can't find SOMETHING to motivate you while you're injured, stop feeling so sorry for yourself and go find something to motivate you! Great video Matty, I did that with my Achilles recovery, it is all documented on my channel! This post may seem a bit harsh to those who have injuries, but I really have no time for people who lose faith just because of a set back. F that! Sure it's difficult and you have to adjust, but sick it up and get on with it. There are millions worse off than us, just because we have an injury doesn't mean life stops. Great work, real inspiring dude

I was injured November 28 at work , a 350ton hydraulic press that bends metal cane down on my hand and broke 3 finger clean and the 4th finger was torn tendon, being out of the gym sucks I moped for over a month all through the holidays never touched the wieghts toll mid January still was difficuilt cause I couldnt grip anything barely and had no strength anyways but I worked around it all my lifts were way down and it motivated me to drive and push myself to where I know I can be now to this day I'm stronger then I ever was not 100 percent healed yet bit pretty damn close. Injurys can happen fast and the result sucks but once you tell yourself that nothing can stop you..nothing ever will you want something bad enough you will get it just have to be safe about how you will get back in that gym and kill the wights again:) love your videos Matt!!

I'm sad to have to sit on the sidelines for potentially another 3 months more. But I will come back harder, stronger and definitely hungrier. Cheers my brother.

I’ve been lifting for 2 years and 2 months. I’m so close to a 315 bench, and I injured my shoulder today because I had a bad spotter who wasn’t strong enough and pulled the bar back then up. That caused the bar to come up close to my upper chest. It fucked up my shoulder. I don’t know how bad the injury is but I can’t even bench the bar without it hurting. It demoralized me so this video helped a lot. I worked so hard for this, and now I don’t know how this will effect my progression considering your shoulders is so involved with so many upper body exercise. This video helped boost my spirit a little

I broke my wrist back in December and when it eventually healed and i got back into lifting and throwing i pushed it too hard and tore my shoulder blade. I didn't get it checked out until end of june so i went 5 months with a tore shoulder blade. When i finally got it checked out they said that it wasnt bad enough that i needed surgery but it was still a torn shoulder blade. Since then I've been in physical therapy and I've been working really hard but the other day i was told i was going to miss my entire football season and im just a freshman. I was really depressed at the time but i decided to do cross country instead( which the doc said would be ok) but ive decided to not give up and come back stronger than ever next year. Thx so much for inspiring me with this video I'll watch it like every morning to stay motivated

Hey Matty, one reason I watch your videos is because you're positive. I hate negativity! I used to lift when I was young but Thoracic Outlet Syndrome(TOS) got the best of me. I've been on disability for over 20 years now. However, in the last several years I've discovered some things like joint mobility exercises, self-myofascial release, and vacuum cupping, that have really helped me reduce my pain levels. I've made a lot of videos about this stuff, if anyone is interested.

Pain or possibly your lower back or core is weak? I'm no trainer but I had lower back problems for the longest time a year into lifting and once I started deadlifting and working my core more it went away. Foam rolling also helps crack your back and alleviate a lot of pain

I don’t lift weights, I’m a dancer but recently I got injured. I have a concussion at first I was told it was extremely minor so I carried on with my normal life just with a few small changes. It’s been two months and I’m much worse, and having to go see a neurologist because it’s too out of hand. I’m a sophomore in high school taking honours classes, it’s just crazy to me how much 10 seconds can change your life. I was fine before I got hit and now I can barely type this. My favourite quote is “My body could stand the crutches, but my mind couldn’t stand the sideline.” It’s too true it’s miserable sitting at dance watching people do what you love and you can’t do anything about it. Hope everyone is getting better!

My leg is stuck in flexion I can't straighten it so that's what we're working on atm but it swells and gets aggravated easily as my kneecap is not in the best shape. Once I can straighten it, there is hope. This injury on top of my back/pelvic stuff....totally wiped me out man. just gotta keep on fighting tho.

I’m currently injured with a simpile quad strain. I keep letting it feel better and reaggravating it like an idiot: For almost 8 months now all I’ve known is hard work, sports, and lifting. The injury took that away from me for almost 2 months now and I’ve been feeling just lost mentally. I’m losing hope that I will be able to get to point of being able to work my ass off without causing pain. I’ve been in PT and took weeks off my sport to watch on the sidelines. How did you get past that stage in your life?

Recently my hands stopped working. They became stale, stiff and hurt like hell. I couldnt bend my wrists or my fingers. Other joints in my body are also affected, but not as severe. I used to compete in armwrestling (I actually won my first gold medal just right before my hands stopped working). I also have a really fun and physically demanding job that I probably cant do anymore. At the moment I am home with 2 kids that I can barely look after. I will see a specialist in a week and see if we can fix my god damn body. But I fear that it will never be the same again. I am just 32 years old and I went from feeling like 25 to feeling like 70 in a matter of months. I try to keep my motivation up... but it is so hard. I keep going to the gym because it relives some of the pain and keeps my body in shape, but it can be so painful at times. I am thankful for this video and others like it. I try to absorb as much motivation I can... And for everyone else out there who are struggling: keep grinding!

After a month plus of rehab from tendonitis, I'm finally back i did my first arm workout today without feeling pain at all (hell it feels awesome). I've felt frustrated but kept consistent by resting, icing, stretching, apply helichrysum while not aggravating the tendon until it finally feels better. Today is a life changing moment for me and it's time to work hard again (and smarter too) to prevent future injury.

Some injuries are difficult to comeback from.. I had a knee injury 18 months ago from Judo, was out of the gym about 9 months, was told by doctors it's probably OA and won't get better, and I should not squat, or lunge, the physio thought I could but should take it easy, don't set any records. I've made bench and deadlift gains, but know when I squat I'm going light, checking my position and my ego. I could miss it out altogether, but stronger muscle helps with mobility. No pain no gain.
