I’m in SoCal 10a. You used to share about being sad the garden is going to sleep, but it gives you a rest. Be ready…you’re not gonna get as much rest!! Although it’s slower, less bugs, less sun issues, less attention needed, but you need to keep planting, feeding, harvesting, and preserving. With building the new stuff, you’re gonna get tired! 🥰

@@dianaanderson6448 We get about 2.5-3 inches per month for the whole growing season in my area of the Great Lakes, so we only water newly sown beds and recent transplants. The main struggle for me this fall has been keeping cabbage moths out of my brassica seedlings in August till now (just picked 3 of them out this morning). So I'll have to get some covers probably if I want to keep doing this. Otherwise, parsnips look great, fall cucumbers look promising, salsify is coming along, and kohlrabi and broccoli look decent too. The other tricky thing is animals seem to favour a lot of the fall crops. Brassicas, lettuce, umbellifers, beets, peas... all popular with them. With the tomatoes and cucurbits grown in summer, it's mostly just bugs and mildew. And with eggplant, okra, peppers and malabar spinach, I've had basically no hassles whatsoever. I'm hoping to keep some things going in winter. The selection is more limited for those, but I'm planning on claytonia, corn salad, winter rye and fava beans (last two just as cover crops), as well as indoor microgreens. I can see the hardier fall crops like komatsuna and cabbage being killed off in Dec-Jan, but then I can start some tubers in the greenhouse in February, and nightshades in March.

This is my 1st garden, I didn't want to invest in an indoor set up, I have a cat and a Britney spaniel also a grandson under 2. LOL. I watched so many winter sowing videos, it was my solution. Im doing this every year and going to plant even more varieties. I'm 100% addicted to seeds now too. I've made me own wire cloches, I have hula hoops and even the wire lawn sign holders used in elections. I will be using those items with row covers. From ontario Canada but lived in the Yukon and cold growing (-30+*c in winter) . A lot of things like kales will overwinter winter and be harvestable even with cold temperatures, I find what kills them is the freeze-thaw- freeze cycle of early winter. If the winter is heavy snow and cold fast they will last clean through if your lucky. A lot of what you can grow is more overwintering than active growing, a lot of brassicas, herbs, carrots and other root vegetables will "over winter" ( die back but re-grow in the spring) rather than be harvestable through the winter. I will say that there is many a story of someone's grandpa pulling frozen carrots from the ground for soup in the winter (covered in hay or fall leaves).

If you are worried about frost in Nov./Dec., you can use a double layer of frost blankets. Frost blankets will probably be more necessary in Jan-March for our growing zone. I have just stocked my supplies via Amazon. I used to drape them over 1-1/2 in. PVC over my beds. This year I will try the metal hoops instead. In my experience, weather dependent; for Zone 7-8, you can grow all brassicas and cold tolerant lettuces, etc. and most root crops Fall through April/May. By May, the weather starts back into the 80's and sometimes the 90's! Brassicas I can keep seeding throughout the winter. I start seeds (indoor) for Spring in December-Feb. for outdoor planting under cover. I no longer follow the 'planting after Easter rule' here because it it already a missed window for many plants by then. Good luck with your gardens!

in the Netherlands we grow Brussels sprouts and kale and leave them until the first frost. We only harvest it when it has frozen. It makes sugars in the kale and Brussels sprouts that you would never get without this frost. And they taste so much sweeter. Brussels sprouts and kale can handle freezing temperatures and snow just fine. Here in the Netherlands we leave this vegetable until after the frost for the sweeter taste. If you have the opportunity, try that with 1 or 2 plants. Worth trying! winter temperatures here vary from -5 to -15 degrees Celsius

Right now cornfield beans are still being canned. They are long and delicious. We grow lots of potatoes, as they keep all winter in the basement. We never had okra or all the varieties of peas that are grown in the Deep South. Many people here are now canning late apples for pies, apple butter, etc.. Sadly, in my experience, a lot of stores don't really even have Fall garden stuff. Big box stores definitely don't and their seeds are usually already gone as they switch their stock to more Fall themed decor. I'm usually disappointed with the selection even at nurseries or specific garden stores.

The past 2 fall/ winters I used your inverted storage bin idea and was able to harvest salads the entire time. It grew slower during the really low temps but still survived. That was such a great video and tip. I was amazed at how well it worked. Now that we are relocating and I’ll no longer have a garden , I might have to look into something like those green stall towers. 😁

HEY NEIGHBOR!! My heart almost jumped out of my chest when you mentioned wingards "your local nursery". I live 5 miles from there! I will be trimming down my elderberry (Bob, American & Adams) if you would like free cuttings. For compost, check into Resoil. They are right outside of Elgin. The owner is super aweaome!

We used a couple hog panels and placed clear plastic over it for this fall in our salad greens area to cover it. Simple and inexpensive.. We are in Central Oregon and our growing season is very short. We pretty darn cold in the winter with snow so we're doing this as an experiment not only for us but I'd love to supplement our feed for our quail, chickens, pheasants and rabbits thru the winter with fresh lettuce and greens.

Maybe I should clarify mister to keep the top moist for germination, sometimes I use plastic wrap to hold moisture just till germination. After that mostly bottom water then poor off any extra

Southern Mulch has some wonderful garden soil that we used to fill our beds. We're in Upstate South Carolina. You will love what you can grow year round here. We harvested every month this past year with the help of a high hoop house.

When you mentioned starting the pea seeds it made me think of second grade when our class started peas as our science lesson. My mom volunteered to take the seedings off our teacher's hands once the seedlings had served their lesson purpose😄 She volunteered the following year for my little brother's tomato seedlings. Pretty resourceful of her😄

If you have bermuda grass at all, you might want to add like 4 more inches of mulch before you fill your beds. Just speaking from personal experience. Bermuda is the devil incarnate. X-D Thank you for teaching and inspiring me so much these past few years!!

WINTER HARDY GREENS!! Baker Creek Seeds sells a wonderful green that does not require even a frost cover in Winter in our area. Check out Tatsoi on their website. It is so sweet, tender, and can even be used to make salads replacing the lettuce. Of course Landis Winter Letter is extremely hardy and we grow on the Cumberland Plateau in TN without even a frost cover. They do great in snow and ice which we have from time to time in our area. You should give these 2 a try for late Fall and Winter!

Hi Jess. Seed starting trays, have clear plastic domes and they work like a mini greenhouse! If you don't have one, your bud in NYS also just covers with plastic wrap for convenience. This will protect your soil blocks from separation, melting with rainfall. There are inexpensive mini greenhouses, they look like shelves but also have a clear plastic zippered jacket ( I have one of those) and it was about $40, maybe you can find it on clearance. I like your set up but my budget does not allow me to buy too many fancy things. I make do. I hope your kitchen garden works out for you. Don't forget to just use a 18 gallon tub, line the bottom with 2 litre bottle types discards to filling in volume. I drill holes an inch or so from bottom for drainage., Cover the bottles with something stiff like heavy cardboard and that should suffice to putting in garden mix( lightweight mixed with peat) I bless you!.

I bought that same Drunken Frizzy Heady Woman lettuce for just the same reason Jess! :D Up here in Canada (Ontario) its frozen right through for us small gardeners. You can't work the ground and the frost hits everything really hard. Right now I'm growing my autumn sowing things that I started up in August to enjoy up until *usually* October. It gets gloomier then too, so it can affect our daylight hours that most plant need. Having crops you can grow in low light conditions are great for the last few growing months. :)
