First rule of international travel: The rights you enjoy in the US do not apply outside the US. If Canadian Border Patrol takes something, you don't necessarily get it back when leaving.

If you come into Canada on a land crossing and use the same land crossing on your return trip you would have to go talk to CBA before crossing back into USA. But for God's sake don't declare a pocket knife as a weapon in Canada, even if a Canadian cop wants to see your knife call it a tool not a weapon.

There are many Americans who pass though Canada on their way to Alaska and think that they can bring their guns because they are just passing through. Then they think their concealed weapons permit is valid in Canada. They are surprised when their guns are confiscated and they are refused entry at the border.

A friend of mine had a 15 year old (THC) possession case that had been dismissed and expunged years before. Canadian customs stopped him and harassed him to no end, and he almost wasn’t permitted entry. The real gem? The drug is legal in Canada. He was being harassed about a dismissed charge from decades before for an act that wasn’t even illegal in the country. 🤦‍♂️

Interesting, my experience as a Canadian is the opposite. Going into the states is always a bit of a scene, coming back seems to always result in 'Welcome Home Eh'. Though last time I went they approached with extreme caution due to my window tint.. I just roll down all windows on the approach now.

Ya, the CBSA are interesting to deal with. Twice a week I import a one ton van full of classic car parts through my company and they sometimes give me the detailed inspection….. Country of origin, what do the parts fit, where do I get the parts from… It’s a process… Being calm and having all the proper paperwork is key.

As a Canadian, all of my experiences with CBSA chalk up to "Welcome Home Eh!" dealing with US CBP on the other hand, excluding maybe one time, I have never not felt like a criminal crossing the boarder, especially a land boarder, air is more lax, presumably because you have already cleared TSA at that point.

Fun fact: CBSA ( Canada Border Services Agency ) is a stand alone organization with no governing body. No government department who oversees them. They don't have to report to anyone. They can just make stuff up on the spot if they want. For example: It is legal to bring in 50 cigars if you have been out of the country for at least 48 hours. I know someone who had them confiscated even though the traveller pulled up the CBSA website on their phone and read the rules out loud to the agent. Still did no good. I imagine that the guards kept them and smoked them.

been back and forth from the US into Canada many times, all with powerboats and powerboat related items and never an issue. Its all about letting them do their job, and as many times as ive crossed its actually fascinating to me how and how well they do it to. Not sure how you handled them but i can tell you playing dumb (not saying this was your case) is never something you want to lean on. Its a professional situation and requires you to act accordingly. Have ALL your stuff in order, simply answer any questions they ask and you'll be on your way. I've taken engines, parts, boats all kinds of high value things and never had anything beyond standard customs walk throughs and verifications. This was all done for personal use, piece of cake either way. Nice boat btw, ive heard Adrenalines run well. Top Gun and Scarab guy myself, but had had many others (its a sickness far worse then cars and you have to do two of everything lol)

Yes, this! Sounds like they went through thousand islands, I typically try to go in via. Johnstown/Prescott, both are small, but Johnstown/Prescott always feels a bit abandoned, so far experiences have been mostly positive.

In my limited experience it was the US Customs that caused me problems. And then there was the time I showed up in Canada with my dog along. Well I didn't have any paperwork for the dog to enter Canada but they allowed us on my way thru anyway. Guess what happened at the US Customs on my way back in? (yup, problems)

3:35 CBA does not give a rat's ass about your schedule or cargo. You are asking permission to enter another country, not the state fairgrounds. If they know you at this one particular border they will know you at all the borders, you have been flagged, expect to answer lots of questions going forward.

Crossing over to the USA is far easier than coming back. I buy stuff all the time in the states, and most of the Canadian guards are powering tripping asshats. I always always cross over late at night, far fewer issues and I usually bring my friendly pup with me. Usually conversation is much easier going as they want to pet the dog while asking questions. Only had an issue once crossing over into the states at Detroit on the Ambassador Bridge, but it was Woodward Dream Cruise weekend and I was told there was a drug smuggling op going on with the heavy amount of traffic for that weekend. Getting through that office was as backed up as driving on Woodward in the middle of the day.

I remember crossing into Canada with my dad to go hunting in the lake of the woods, they asked him if he had and firearms and he said yeah our shotgun and bolt-action. We also had a spring powered pellet gun that my dad didn’t mention cause it isn’t a firearm, then the rookie Canadian border guard found it and brought it out like it was a belt fed machine gun, wasn’t until the other veteran guard calmed him down that they let us through. Gotta say this story reminds me of my own experience with Canadian border crossing.

Spring assitded knives are legal to buy own and carry in Canada by federal law - CBSA has been overstepping their authority by creating CBSA POLICY (not law) declaring spring assisted knives not allowed and siezing them when possible at the border-- large retailers seem to have no difficulty importing spring assisted knives into Canada and they are easily purchased in Canada - I personally own spring assisted knives purchased here in Canada and there is no issue carrying them -- switch blades and out the front or balisong knives are prohibited here as are gravity knives

A few years ago the CBSA changed how they interpret the rules around pocket knives and more designs fell under the description of 'assisted opening'. If the consulate says "you have to go and try" that's because you're not officially banned, but any given border officer has access to your record and could arbitrarily refuse entry at their own discretion, depending on what you tell them and the mood they're in. It's no different going from Canada to the USA, I've heard stories of people having their cars physically dismantled when crossing into Maine to search for drugs, and then just being left with the pieces. They don't put it back together for you, it's your problem even if you're not guilty of any crime. Be nothing but sunshine and rainbows, and stick to the necessary facts when talking to border patrol, tell them only the information they're asking for and patiently wait for them to wave you through.

Never joke with border agents, no mather what country you're in. But assisted opening knives aren't actually illegal. It's kind of a gray zone. To be considered a switchblade (which is illegal) it has to have a button to operate it. But it's border agents, your mileage may vary.

I deliver trucks, buses, and motor homes-'drive out fly home. Another driver and I are going through customs in Canada. The other driver was being pressured by another person behind him. Words were exchanged he is taken through a thorough examination. Customs makes him take his CB radio back to the airli e and ship it. Me I sail through customs CB radio antenna in my Carry on---my smile and cheerful attitude got me through.

And I can say unequivocally that Canada has the rudest, worst attitude, most humourless, biggest chip on the shoulder Customs and Immigration staff I have experienced anywhere. They asked if you had weapons, you told them your knife. This indicated to them that you consider your knife a weapon. If they had just found or saw it and you framed it as being a tool you'd probably have been fine. Intent matters a lot the way our laws are here. A knife is never for protection, its for whittling and cutting apples. You can buy those spring open knives at stores here too. Its stupid. Whether its illegal or not depends on if the person in posession of it considers it a weapon or not.

The Border Agents have a terribly difficult job, and deal with people giving them attitudes all the time. It doesn't matter if you're tired, or if you have an attitude, you treat them with the utmost respect. They are protecting both countries from so many illegal things... he's lucky they didn't dismantle the boat, then advise him he had 1 hour to get it out before they fine him. Vinny is a goof and deserved the trouble he received.

The knife border confiscation must be a thing. I was in Mexico rebording a cruise ship several years ago and the federal police officer at the dock there tried unsuccessfully to confiscate my 3.7" long pocket knife, when I knew 4" was the legal length limit. I had to have the ship security come down and get the knife and they handed it back to me in front of the cop, the cop that argued with me for over ten minutes that first there was no 4" law, then after he admitted there was he claimed it was over 4". I knew he just wanted the damn knife, and due to sentimental reasons that wasn't going to happen.

If a knife can be opened using only the force of gravity (such as being held upside down) or if the knife can be opened by “flicking” it (without applying any force on the blade) it is illegal. If the blade can also cut you while opening it is also illegal. When the blade is opening if the leading edge of the blade is sharpened and can cut you then it is illegal (and also a terrible design). They are yes commonly confused so maybe then knifes your thinking of are different then what i'm thinking.

Don't joke EVER with customs of any country you're not a citizen of. Do so with the ones from wherever you are at your own risk but they won't be able to bar you from entering the country. Also whatever is legal where you're from is no where near a proper argument in any other country. Yeah, we're neighbors and that's all nice but we are not the same because we share a border.

As a Canadian, that knife he had in his pocket is in the same category of "weapons" as a full auto machine gun (yes our laws are really that stupid) so I fully believe he had this much trouble over that knife alone.
