I have this exact model and i've never had an issue with loading the string. I was really impressed overall with the trimmer and the battery lasts way longer than I need it to. In my opinion and with my experience with it I think it's a great value for what you get.

I wonder what kind of Engineer you are? First, the wimpy charger is a good thing. You want to charge a battery as slow as possible. Slow reduces the heat inside a battery causing it to last a lot longer. Also As soon as you use the battery, you put it on the charger so that the next time you use the battery, it is charged. Second, it looks like you can put the handle onto the bar either way so that it is angled up or down. Third, when you trimmed with the Ego, you kept the head far away so that you used the end of the string to trim with. Some of the scenes with the Ryobi you had the head of the trimmer right up against the solid object you were trimming around causing more wear and tear on the head/motor. Fourth, the Ego is $250, the Ryobi is $190, both at Amazon prices. For the $60 difference, I would glue a little guide into the Ryobi so the string would feed right through. That is the Engineer in me.

I’ve had this trimmer for two years now and have had zero issues. I use it weekly around the yard and at the farm. It’s also much less expensive than EGO. It’s also compatible with my old tool heads. I would suggest before you make a video about something that you actually use it for a period of time. Btw- it takes less than a minute to spool new line. It’s working just fine for me and I’m not going broke buying overpriced EGO products.

@@Kitearmy I just got the carbon fiber edition which I believe is a slightly upgraded model to the one you have. All the heads work perfectly fine and internally on the string trimmer feed there is a little tunnel the string passes through when the arrows are lined up. Both heads click on and off fairly easily.

Been using two of the 40v HP trimmers to maintain a 180 acre sports complex with zero issues. Head takes a little getting used to but all my employees like it. We use ECHO 0.95 line with it. Also, the fast chargers make a massive difference.

I just purchased the carbon fiber version and it seems to have a plastic port for the string to flow through easily. I put my own string in and it was pretty quick and easy. Also the charger with the carbon fiber seems to be the larger quick charger and it brought it from 1/4 dots to 3 dots in like 30 mins. I didn't finish charging it because I had another battery and wanted to keep it semi charged until I use it next weekend. I'm already invested in the Ryobi system with a handful of attachments I have and have used with their old version which works well still as a backup. I have spent hours and hours during hot summer heat trying to change string on other trimmers mostly the Stihl trimmers and this one seemed to be easy mode compared to those imo.

even after your review I went ahead and purchased it just because I already have the power head. I was loving it until I had to replace the string and had similar issues as you did. I took the spool off and realized my string had missed the center of the spool mechanism. simple alignment issue and back in business.

Since i already own a Ryobi lawn mower, and the quick charger for this battery, and you can remove the head to install the line, i see no issues and placed an order. Pretty easy obstacles to overcome imo! Its the power im after. I felt the 18V trimmer was too slow. Maybe the fast charger is not released in the US yet? Seems Europe gets access to Ryobi tools earlier than the US.

I got the string stuck inside and I can’t even get to it to fix it. I can’t turn the green spool at all counterclockwise (if that’s what you are supposed to do to access it.). Nor have I figured out another way to access it. Of course, the instructions don’t acknowledge this situation, so I’m stuck till I figure it out.

Just bought this exact model a few weeks ago. Main reason I stuck with the Ryobi was already had their 40V Leaf Blower which I liked and had that extra battery plus a more powerful charger. So far has worked great for me, only have to wind up the spool once and took a moment to get the string through but not too bad, although may have just been in comparison to my older manual wind up model. Hope i'll still feel the same way by the end of the summer. BTW always love your in depth reviews. Keep it up!

I just got mine yesterday and had no issues swapping the heads on it and 3 hours of charge time is fine since I go more than that between cuttings. The one thing I don't like is that the manual fixed line will not work with the .155 line I have that I use with my gas trimmer. The .095 line is just too thin, I have to change that at least twice when doing my property. I can do the entire property with a single .155. I will try to find a way to mod this but I'm happy with mine.

I have the same model, not sure about how you reviewed this. But mine; the tool work perfect, I have been using it for over a year. My only issue is the battery, you should not drain the battery or it will go on a “sleep mode”. Other then that I’m happy with the tool, the price was good.Try to remove the guard and see results ;) just stay safe.

27-year-old wife loves the Ryobi over the DeWalt. Ryobi's battery lasts longer and is able to trim around the house, 2 40 foot containers, 57 trees, and 100 yards of entry fence. Before the battery goes dead. Puts it on the charger and mows and then takes the battery off the charger and puts it on the blower. Plan enough energy to blow off around the house, carports and porches. She got to full trimmings out of 1 head of string from the factory. Today was her 1st day to have to reload it. She didn't have a problem and said it was much easier than the DeWalt tremor. The battery last twice as long and the reloading of the tremor are much easier than the DeWalt

Could you do a review of the HP Ryobi string trimmer? Got it myself recently and interested in seeing how it compares to what ego has to offer. I like the power on the HP plus it comes with a rapid charger so not a bad deal for only $40 more than the brushless. Also they must have fixed the head because now it’s just one straight tunnel to push it through

My dad got this trimmer for the Expand-It system mainly. He did not like the head system at all. Luckily head from his Craftsman gas trimmer works on the Expand-It system on this trimmer. He like the Craftsman head since you can load 0.105 string on the head easily. It lasts for a long time unless you hit concrete. He is only about 1/3 or 1/2 of way done with the spool of line that he bought like 15 years ago, and I believe the spool was around 500 or 700 feet of line, but the label is no long on the spool since it had been in the weather a few times.

I discovered dutch bump heads and get standard light heads that use heavier line and decreases rotational mass. Surprisingly, one load of pro line with a standard head the pros usually use will last about as long as a full bump feed full of that crap line they have to use. The ones with 3 pieces of large line doubled over gives 6 cutting tips instead of two and bigger tougher line. It increases the power and battery life of the trimmer as well due to that rotational mass decrease. I didn't like the bump feed head either but I don't like any of the bump feeds anymore.

I've got the same trimmer and it takes about 1-2 minutes to load string. It has tons of power and run time especially with a 6 ah battery. I also have the fast charger so I can charge my batteries quicker. I have plenty to trim around on my 3 1/2 acre yard. I use mine with other attachments like a pole saw, small tiller for flower beds and long reach hedge trimmer. There's nothing wrong with it. I've had mine for 2 years. I had an earlier version of this trimmer that I had for about 4 years. I gave it to my son when he bought his first house 2 years ago. I'm not claiming it to be the absolute greatest, but it is a very good trimmer.

I change the line head for a 4 lines fixed line head. Being so light the battery last way longer than if I use the bump head. I have been using it for bussiness daily this is the second season. No problems at all. I use the edger atch, pole saw atch, string trimmer atch also a 3 theeth blade brush cutter. I had tried the kobalt 80v 16inch and I didnt like that.

Bought this with a hedge trimmer. Haven't tried the hedge yet trimmer yet. Sadly, the buffers are in 18v. I would like something to buff my vinyl flooring, and my wood cabinets. But, may not handle a wet-dry scenario.

I own the predecessor model of your Ryobi 40v trimmer and it uses the same line feed design. I have installed string 5-6 times over the past couple of years and it literally takes seconds. I too am an engineer and was surprised by your lack of problem solving skills. All you had to do was straighten the string end before inserting it! Instead, you tried to jam the crooked line in and probably bent the line further. When you tossed the trimmer in a moment of childish frustration, you also tossed out any credibility as a competent reviewer.

I have the 1st and 2nd Gen of these. I skipped the string and bought the brush head due to my yard being a jungle. I always had plenty of power, and multiple batteries, so the charge time wasn't an issue. Looking at your video I can see the issues you are having, but it is an Expand-It.

Although I'm a Ryobi fan, they don't hit the mark on all their tools. I have a 2019 version of the 40v brushless attachment capable trimmer. I bought it for the battery and power head. I mainly use the power head for the tiller, brush cutter, and power sweeper attachments. I have other trimmers I use all the time, so I've only used this trimmer attachment a couple of times and have not even had to respool the string. I bought this kit on sale which at the time was cheaper than buying the battery alone. Go figure. Anyway, decent power head and now I have an extra battery for my Ryobi chainsaw. Appreciate you reviewing the shortcomings of these products.

Thanks for the video. I think 3 hours to charge a battery with that VA isn't bad. Back in the day, batteries of all sorts took 12-14 hours to charge. Rapid charging makes batteries hotter and heat kills batteries. That's how the companies make you have to buy more batteries. I'd actually prefer a slower charger.

The battery charge is 3 hours with the charger included in the kit. Ryobi sells rapid chargers that are up to 4x faster. So, if a regular charger takes 3 hours to charge 4amp battery, then the rapid charger would charge it for about 45min. Needless to say, that regular (standard) charger is better for the overall battery life. This guy is a joke.

Aren't the white arrows on the sides supposed to be aligned (and not in the locked position) when you want to feed the line through? Yours was in the locked position.

Will you test this with the edger attachment. My Greenworks has the edger attachment and it sucks. Constantly stops as it does not have enough torque to cut through thick and over grown grass. I'm wonder if the Ryobi suffers in the same manner.

Seriously disagree with some points made here. I own this model and The heads are not that hard to put on. Secondly just get the blades and will not have to worry about loading string. I can understand though pointing out that the string channel should have been engineered better, but this model is not a fail.

Kite army would have better reviews if he would just stop bashing Ego's competitors. I like ego but I also like other brands too and I've seen kite army do reviews on all of the blowers out there and they were the best reviews I've ever seen kite army do. He should do more reviews like that. If he is an engineer then I would love to see him take that knowledge and put it towards all of his reviews he seems like a really good guy and has a lot of talent for this channel.

Funny but IMHO the ryobi trimmer head is the best in the market. Some people like fixed line, some the plastic blades and some the spool line. Ryobi present the three options in one trimmer head. Super easy to change from one option to the other. Super fast to load and to change the line. The original batteries are expensive at Home Depot. but you can find them at eBay quite cheap. With the fast charger, the 4ah/144wh batteries charges in about 30 minutes. The 6ah/216wh batteries change in about an hour. For most things you can run the ryobi trimmer on low speed, giving you plenty of run time. At high speed you get the power to deal with the most demanding jobs. Things I do not like; (1) The knob to tightens the attachments to the upper part is plastic. The should go back to the full metal one used in previous models. (2) The spring in the trimmer head is too soft, I replaced it with a stronger one. (3) assembly in china.... not much quality control. As a result many units will get to the store with malfunctions. So if you buy your trimmer there, there is a change to you will have to return it, No problem, they will replace it with another one, but there the ryobi trimmers are expensive. You can get them really cheap over ebay, but if you get a bad one, tough luck for you.

i bought this trimmer beginning of last year. iot looks like they changed the design on the head mine looks nothing like this the center is solid you only have to ring 2 holes it pops off super easy so i always pop the head off start the string pop it back on then load

I have the 2017 40v trimmer but replaced the head that is in this video. I've never had any problem threading line through. Maybe a couple of tries at worst.

So did you break out the channel that the string goes through, get a defective one or did you buy an aftermarket one that was a horrible knock off? I've had mine longer than this video has been out and it's really easy to load provided the string channel is there. I can imaging the frustration without it.

I don’t know what model you have but I have the brand new ryobi 40v HP trimmer with carbon fiber shaft and do not have that line problem. Goes straight through and winds up easy. The inside of my trimmer head doesn’t even look like what you showed. And it’s the reel easy 3 in 1 head like you showed. So must be something wrong with that trimmer you used. Also the ryobi line sucks which hurts the performance too. I switch that out as soon as I got it.

My 2018 Ryobi trimmer has a similar line feed and tool. I've had no issues with it. I wonder what had changed. It didn't seem the spool was all the way up on your test trimmer. It has to feed through the spool I think. Try popping the spool out and reinserting. feeding through the top does nothing. I like your channel!!!

I admit the trimmer head could be better but it seems the head part in your video is missing a little cap that helps channel the string (3:05 min mark) its not as hard is it was shown in the video. It should channel through a lot easier. Unless this is an older model and they fixed it since then. It shouldn’t be that hard.

I really liked this trimmer until... Mine came with a winder to make loading the string easy. But yesterday while trimming it just stopped and won't start again. $200 for about 1.5 years of use. Slightly better than the last gas powered trimmer which didn't last a season.

I've reloaded my string trimmer a couple of times now. I'm pretty sure it has taken me under 2 minutes, combined to reload it with 16 feet of .095 each time. Honestly it's a great buy in my opinion. Really, just buy the best model that's going to work for you, from the closest hardware store. It's the main reason I started using their products, is because I live near home depot. It's great equipment overall, they are trying to compete with E-go. They're pretty much there, with their products. I'd I'd still like to see a slightly more rigid build on their mowers, but Ryobi makes decent power equipment overall.

I really wish I'd seen this review before I bought this pos. It was fine until I had to replace the string which, I agree with the reviewer, is almost impossible - EXTREMELY frustrating. The reviewer should have shown us how to take the head apart to load the string. I'm still trying to figure that out. My almost new trimmer might well wind up in the dump.

I took mine apart, and there is a piece that goes in the center of that head which appears to have a channel down the center of it. You don't have to poke around very much to find the other side. Honestly, I saw the reload procedure on other channels for this weed eater, and that was one of the reasons I decided to get it. Strange to see someone so frustrated with it? If you are lacking that piece, which I don't see in the picture, I can see why you'd have an issue. Not only is it hard to line up, but there would also be a spring it the way.

But yeah, if you don't have that, you're having to not only thread the line to the other side, but you also have to make it through the spring that is now in the way.
