The Toyota rep’s honesty and humility as it pertains to the platform was refreshing. Tragic how the stealerships are ruining the Toyota brand, and to be forthcoming I’m not sure if the markups are going to make the juice worth the squeeze (I’ve already seen $10k-$15k + estimates), but this rep made me love the idea of the truck even more.

Great stuff. Please repeat the same tests once you've built out the Tacoma and it’s at full built out weight, fully fueled, full water etc. Will be useful to see what differences you perceive in performance on the course at higher weight and CoG.

There’s no moonroof on this one, but says it’s standard on the website. Can you get some clarity for us? We don’t want it. Takes up 1.7” of headroom and that’s a deal breaker for tall guys.

@mitchellholder I expect it is like the new Land Cruiser or the GX Overtrail. The Sunroof is standard but you can "delete it" on the options list.

I've been in sales for 28 years and somehow it works but I'm also a gearhead of sorts. One of my friends worked on the steering system for the newest Tacoma and Tundra, no matter how many beers he consumed, he wouldn't give any information, trust me I tried. Thank you Sheldon for keeping the Tacoma true to it's roots but also keeping it moving forward.

I test drove a 2024 Tacoma SR5 4x4 today at Precision Toyota in Tucson. The low-end power is noticeabley better over my 2023 TRD Sport. The seating position is better, I am average height, so the seating position in my 23 is fine for me, It's not a big deal. The room behind the seat for the rear passenger is also a little more generous. Other than that, the 24 and 23 are more alike than different to me. I won't be running out to trade in my 23, but if I were buying a new Tacoma today, I would go for the 24, even though there are a few new 23s on the lot still. I know that seems like a no-brainer, but some people invariably will still prefer the older model.

Moved to Montana from California a few years ago. Best move I ever made. And property here is more affordable than CA, and you get way more beauty for the buck. It’s not even close. $200k in CA gets you a beat up parking lot in Compton with a view of a crack house in one side, and homeless encampments in the other. $200k in Montana gets you 20 acres with stunning views, no crime, and enough left over to build your own house (as in YOU build your own house…don’t be lazy!). Also, no zoning or building codes for that course. It’s YOUR land, so you get to do what YOU want on YOUR land without the criminal CA govt. in your face to deviously scheme how best they can steal your money from you.

I would take what Mr Croft has to say about the 2024 Tacoma with a grain of salt since he does have a partnership with Toyota. I had the chance to buy a 2024 Tacoma TRD Off-road, but was not willing to pay the $57k! And I think the fuel savings is not there with the new 2.4 liter turbo because Toyota had not released estimated mpg when I had the chance to buy one last November. So I ended up buying a 2023 TRD Off-road at a very good price. Been nothing but smiles with my purchase. No regrets.

@shitloveaduck8 ай бұрын
Once kitted out with all the gear they are adding?? Enough for a driver & his/her dog!! 😂😂😂. These full on off-road versions, regardless of manufacturer, pay the price big time with payloads. You either modify the suspension enough to handle being overloaded (which is a non-no, especially if there’s an accident and that weight is a factor) or just load it up regardless. Carly Suspensions have some suspensions that definitely handle payload AND full on off-road capabilities. They are expensive though!! Custom to your end use. Not sure if they have tackled the Tacomas yet, but they sure change the drivability and capabilities of the HD pickups out there!

I'm not a Toyota person so I've got questions. Do you have to use Crawl Control or will the computer let you drive it yourself and still put power to the tire needing it? Why doesn't Toyota offer a front locker for the really hard stuff? Can the panhard bar disconnect be used in 2H? Will this little truck clear 35s ?
@jimmy-buffett8 ай бұрын
Crawl control isn't required, but for steep declines you'd do well to shift it manually down into a low gear to control speed. A front locker would be best, but Toyota's ABS-based traction control is good enough to get you through most obstacles. My guess as to why they don't put a front locker on these trucks is that they're scared of breaking CV axles due to improper use. You'd be amazed at how many people don't know when / how to correctly use the lockers on these trucks. I've led beginner runs multiple times where people just turn their lockers on as soon as they get on dirt, then leave them on all day. The main limitation of fitting large tires on these trucks -- the body mount -- has been moved back a couple of inches for clearance. I think Toyota has stated in other places that these trucks will fit 35's without rubbing, if not then they're awful close. For large tires these trucks are a big improvement over the previous gen Tacoma and 4Runner, my 2018 4Runner rubs just going from 32's to 33's.
@teddonley95948 ай бұрын
@jimmy-buffett I've been a jeep guy since the 80s and never paid much attention to Toyotas. I know they used to be really reliable but weren't up to the trails around here, deep rutted and large rocks. Now that I'm older and not as quick to tackle really hard stuff I've been looking into these compact trucks for my off-road fun. Easier trails don't require my jeep and let's face it, a more comfortable ride isn't going to hurt my old spine lol so far the colorado ZR2 seems to be the best choice for my purposes because I may not need a front locker but then again I might. I'm going to check out the Ranger Raptor and there's always the Gladiator Rubicon but it's got such a long wheelbase it's harder to maneuver in these parts. Maybe Ram will build a Dakota worth off-roading
@jimmy-buffett8 ай бұрын
@@teddonley9594 I help run a large Toyota-based offroading club here in Colorado. When I moved here I had a 2011 FJ Cruiser, now I have a 2018 4Runner. The main deficiency on the Toyotas is tire size, when I went from 32's to 33's on my 4Runner they rubbed. 35's will fit but rub a lot, anything larger takes significant modification to fit and to drive comfortably at highway speeds. Neither of my Toyotas came with a factory front locker. Toyota has added ATRAC -- Jeep has the same thing, called BLD -- that works well enough to do all the trails I've done. Most people aren't doing very hard terrain in a brand new truck to justify the locker, so it's really the 2nd or 3rd owner of these trucks that gets the most use out of a front locker. I had a '99 Wrangler before I bought my FJ. It broke on a Colorado mountain and stranded me. That's why I buy Toyotas now. Jeeps are more capable and lord knows the mod prices are cheaper, but my two Toyotas have done everything I've asked of them and reliably for 13 years of offroading.
@teddonley95948 ай бұрын
@jimmy-buffett I wheel in the forest where anything under a 35 isn't going very far. Currently, I'm on 37s but I've found some easier trails that set of 35s will do ok on and 33s of you have a good winch. I've used a front locker to climb up and over everything from fallen oaks to large rocks to just climbing out of a 6 foot deep rut lol our group works with the forest service to keep things cleaned up and make sure nobody leaves the trails. We help maintain the unmaintained trails lol
