This is so disappointing. While I do agree that DA:I was very flawed and mix, it do a good job setting cool plot lines that to be continued in DA4. I was really hoping they could learn from their mistakes in DA:I and live up to the potential that DA4 had. But over the last few months, especially since Jason’s Anthem article, my faith in BioWare has been completely destroyed. I was so excited to see how the story to save the world from Solas would play out and learn more about the connections between the elves, dwarves, and the original giants. Now I expect nothing but an unfocused and live service mess.

I believe Bioware downfall started with the frostbite engine. The talent got tired of trying to get it to even make the type of games they wanted, spending years in game development just trying to get the bitch to work. Head people left becuz the projects weren't going anywhere. Now all we have is a bioware full of talentless hacks with no direction. Maybe there is still good devs around but their work just can't stand out from the big pile of shit the studio is nose diving into. EA did this 😡

@@frozenfury0 It probably _was_ well underway as they did have a roadmap and one that they actually liked! EA canned it and told Bioware to work on Anthem instead to prevent it from being a complete dumpster fire (with mild success). Now they'll have the same deadline as the original idea, with less time and less experienced staff, but _now_ that the first idea was canned (regardless the reason) it will be viewed as an unworthy of effort by EA since if it really was good enough (and by good I mean long term profitable) they'd have at least left the skeleton crew to keep some semblance of it alive. Bioware will be told to start over and probably fall right back into this toxic trap of having a year and a half to make a full fledged AAA game with forced multiplayer if not an outright unfinished game that will have "live" updates in the form of years worth of DLC that would have and should have been included in the base game. Like even the line they threw out about what DA4 would be just sounded _exactly_ like what they were describing Anthem would be.

The fact that they are building off of Anthem's code base isn't as bad as it sounds. Using a code base is similar to to making a mod for a game, it can be pretty much the same or vastly different depending on your level of skill.(A close enough analogy even though it's not exactly the same considering the have access to the source code) Also with them using the same code base they do know some of the worst bugs and can hopefully get the help they need to make sure they don't reappear. I still believe they should have actually used Inquisitor's code base to help build Andromeda and then used the updated code base for Anthem. or even start with Andromeda's code to help with Anthem. In the best case scenario it means that they will be able to fix issues like the loading screens and be able to focus on making a good game and have dedicated group of coders who know the code can help fix the bugs while the rest of the team focus on the game. In the worst case scenario (which I think it will be closer to being) the game's bugs might be expanded on similar to how Bethesda games have the same bugs in most of their games(They use the same code base for their games) because they might be using spaghetti code as fixes for their games.(I'm assuming they are using spaghetti code considering they are forced to use Frostbite and DICE who help them with the main issues apparently also use allot of spaghetti code)

Nintendo would probably be the best studio to try and work for, since they seem to care about all their employees more than most, but just be sure to look into different companies before applying for them.

I actually keep tally of the BW old guard, so I can say that it's not exactly true. BW still has veterans like Mark Darrah (who worked on BG2 back in the day), as well as Preston Watamaniuk and Derek Watts (both of whom were on the NWN team). But yeah, compared to all the people they lost in the recent years, they are quite few in number... It's basically the story of Origin Systems all over again.

The idea of a game's story not ending when it should end is pretty abhorrent to me. Imagine if Red-Dead or Spider-Man or GoW ended early or mid-way through in its campaign and we'd be waiting until maybe even now to get the full story. I'm mildly reminded of what FFXV did too. Where it had blatantly obvious places for DLC and shoved nearly all character development for the cast there (or in side-movies, animes) instead of in the game.

Sad times for Dragon Age fans. I think DA: Origins is one of the best western RPG's of all time. I loved the story, the characters, the world, its lore, writing, etc. I got so lost in the world, just like in Mass Effect 1 and 2. I'm just sad that one of my favorite IP's are dying.

Laidlaw that inquisition would work perfectly fine on (what were then) the current generation consoles as would on the new generation ones and pre-ordered the deluxe version of Inquisition only to discover that not only was a shameful mess but that they were not going to even try to sort the various bugs we were experiencing as a matter of urgency (which left many people unable to get a refund). On top of that we were attacked by EA paid bots every time we tried to ask for help on their forum, fb page and reddit, some people were even told that if they were that poor that couldn't afford a new console shouldn't play videogames because them, the affluent ones, didn't want to have to play a lesser game. That's just one of the examples that come to mind along with their community manager telling us to shut up and stop complaining culminating with the 'sorry folks, no dlc for you'. I have been a fan of bioware games for 13 years but since DA:I I will not pre-ordered another of their games again and just wait that is in decent enough state that can actually be played and check that is actually a story driven RPG not some loot boxes scam.

But yeah releasing it on all the consoles at the time probably why it was hell for the developers. loot boxes scam? didn't happen in DAI or MEA. u meant games like COD:WW2 I believe the opposite actually. There's a large group of people that targeted Bioware games because of their progressive politics. Unfortunately their games need to be great to stand up to the haters, it hasn't been since the 2 founders left the company. lastly, it's NOT WISE TO PRE-ORDER ANY GAMES period.

A lot of things go wrong at EA and its studios. Some things have to do with company policy, others with the organization of studios under EA's roof, the push to use 1 in-house engine, Frostbite, in order to save licensing fees and unify workflows, the live service model and lacking budget for SP portions of games. EA prefers to see studios use Frostbite not only because they save licensing fees, but because they have interchangeable personell that can hop from project to project where help is needed. So if a project like FIFA makes more money than anything in their lineup for years needs more developers, they can simply choose out of a pool of devs. The devs are missing in other projects of course, causing chaos and crunch. Then you have to consider fluctuation. Studios don't consist of constant team members. A lot of good ones left BioWare. Naturally, there will always be fluctuation between studios or people retiring. Live services are the preferred model at EA thanks to Blake Jorgensen, who greenlights projects financially. The problem is that most games don't really capture audiences for a long time. Players want hand-crafted stories, hand-placed assets. Not soulless, procedurally generated and repeating garbage. In case of Battlefield games they don't select the SP missions to suit the narrative. The SP locations are nothing more than recycled MP locations with a bit of scripting slapped on top. It's lazy, soulless and forgettable. And players don't like it. Quite sadly there are more than enough that still buy the shit anyways and thus the quality goes down the shitter. Their current template is: 4-5 hours SP missions, about 4-6 of them with minimal effort. And because they are mediocre at best, they justify the future lack of SP with the resonance of their previous ones. It's not that people don't want decent SP, quite the opposite is true. They want both, good SP and MP. In case of BF V, everything is mediocre at best. The game is one giant mess, without any design directive, without any idea what the final product should have been. This is what happens if you try to ride the Fortnite wave in order to make some quick cash. They made colors pop, add steampunk outfits and items (Cricket bat, Katana, prosthetic arm... etc), put a hipster portion of gender politics in the game only to realize that nobody wanted any of this. What a surprise! Not mentioning the huge lack of factions, maps, stories, in short: CONTENT. Then there are the technical limitations of Frostbite. Some people say it's great for FPS and nothing else. I would say that it's not even that great for that. Don't get me wrong, it has some nice features, but it hurts even FPS games with lacking features like switching your load out without disconnecting from the server or activating achievement trackers in-game. In fact you can't even quit out of a game within a second, nah, it takes ages to do even that for no reason. They need to do way more work on game specific engine functions like inventory management for RPGs, realtime management of loadouts etc. Some of the best games ever made were made with Unreal Engine 3. Use the engine that suits your game, don't make it the other way around.

And the Star Wars MMO is good as well. Those online games don't seem out of place, or rushed out. They have been thought out as online experiences from the beginning and stick to it, unlike games like Anthem who clearly have no idea of what they're supposed to be.
