If you've ever been on a simulator style thrill ride at one of the big amusement parks you know how much wind and stuff can add to the immersion of the experience. This may be enough to trick the brain even though it's very localized.

The alien encounter at Disney back in early 2000, the hot breath on your neck when it breaks out of containment really made the experience.

You joke, but ultrasonic haptics probably isn't the technology you'd want for this purpose. There's already an existing technology sector of teledildonics that services this market. They even have heating pads to similar body warmth and can remotely synchronize with body movement. That sounds a lot more plausible than getting hit in the face with carefully timed puffs of air.

@Mike Trieu Excuse me for saying this, but that feels a little too specific, are you by chance an engineer for Bad Dragon or smth?

I think u said it all there, 1 out of 100, same with haptics on PS5 controller, truth is it wouldn't bother me if it didn't do any of the haptics. It's a novelty & always will be. 90% of the people with haptics vests never use them which tells u how realistic it feels when having to put on a vest is too much trouble. I mean the way u described it, yeah that would be awesome, but the reality is this thing probably feels like jets of air blowing on ya face for all situations.

I don't know about this. But if they make something that can scratch that itch I keep getting in my headset that makes me take it off every 5 minutes, then I'll buy it.

I feel like for taste and smell just get safe chemicals that get close enough to the real deal then done. Next taste maybe get chemicals again filter air with the chemicals that foods use to get a flavor

i am wondering if the fans that blow air to cool the headsets could use coding to use those fans in inventive ways, such as creating bursts of air to the face (i feel the air blowing onto my face around my eyes).. and could simulate some kinds of haptics using the air, such as simulating wind blowing or bursts of bombs, or perhaps even some underwater or transition from above to under water situations?

I always like to see innovation in any field, but to be a little more realistic. VR will not be seen as truly immersive. Unless we discover a to invent full dive. We will never be able to achieve that level of immersion in the physical world. It just is not physically possible.
