Bill is referring to the homeless in California, where they are concentrated in LA and San Francisco. A minimum wage that supports living in either city would be so astronomically high, business would either shut down or cheeseburgers increase to $30 each. It's not simply that the wage is too low, it's that the cost of living is so, so high. The average rent in SF is $3700 a month. Based on a 40 hour week you would need to make $23 an hour just to cover rent. It is recommended to only spend 30% of your wage on rent. That means you need to make $12333 a month or $77 an hour. You need to ask why rent is so expensive not why wages are so low.

accurate alloys this is something everybody does? People pro gun control aren’t talking about you. I’m guessing it’s a hobby, because if someone breaks into your house your guns being locked up it’s not easy to somersault into action with the trigger being ready against said bad guy intruding your house you failed to lock properly in your dodgy neighbourhood. There is no magic wand to undo gun violence immediately, but having some common sense laws, like having gun tracking so you can’t just randomly sell a gun to someone without paperwork. Background checks etc and etc. A lot of these laws actually exist, they just need to be enforced.

Utah once did an experiment to tackle homelessness. At the time, they had done some number crunching and found that it was cheaper to offer each homeless person a room for a month and a counsellor than it was to put them in prison, and thus decided to do the former and homelessness was cut by 90% and many of them stayed off the streets. Financial sense you'd think? But it was all scrapped because someone said in a whiny voice "What about me?". So rather than just ignore it and move on, or, more appropriately just sarcastically repeat what they said, they listened to that one guy who worked in prison labour. And thus we are where we are now. This goes to the core of what is wrong in America, where progress is conditional to how much money can be made from it, and it has been slowly engorging government programs. It's less Federal business and more Ferengi business, where just to keep a conversation going you have to pay for it. This is the ticket scalping market brought to a political level, where the government could be functional, but it chooses to be frivolous, looking for every possible which way to make money from something.

Living in LA my entire 37 year life, and a nice area in Glendale, everything Bill says here is absolutely true. The cost of living is so ridiculously high, property values have skyrocketed to the point where most of the middle class can barely afford one of the new luxurious condo's and apartments they keep over building. It's never been this bad. The goods and services keep rising in cost, as do the taxes. The worst part is, the wages are stagnant. The population keeps growing and the facade makes it seem like the city is bustling, but even in the nice areas, the homeless population has grown, and the cities seem to do not a damn thing about it. Debt has gotten worse, as has crime.

Yep. That coupled with the insane cost of higher education. The average cost of a four year degree (adjusted for inflation) has increased 161% just since 1987. If you can't even afford to get a college education, odds are you're going to live in a vicious cycle of poverty til death. Sadly, it's only going to get worse.
@Technibility5 жыл бұрын
@@pneulancer Along with less incentive for kids to want to go to college and eventually get an undergrad, given the average median income compared to the higher cost of living in the state. Also less incentive for a teenager to give a damn about their retail or service job, another reason imo we've seen a drop off in terms of customer service overall across the board. Walk into a Macy's in the Glendale Galleria anytime in 1999 when I was working there retail and it was bustling with employees and customers. Walk in today and there's one employee for the entire 2nd floor/women's section and one register. The mall occupants as a whole walk through the galleria but don't actually shop. Once prosperous companies like Gap and Sephora losing money annually. Department stores going out of business. Retail establishments closing in rising record numbers annually, with less and less new retailers opening in the country, while automation continues to take human work.

Bill Maher had a great monologue here. But yeah how do you blame Trump for this. Also if we are giving 400 million to Ukraine and there are fears of corruption, well then the President has a responsibility to investigate it. As he should with corruption everywhere and there is MASSIVE corruption everywhere, specially Democrat run states.

@Sudhir Kakar why should there be an "if" ?
@ludo54755 жыл бұрын
@Sudhir Kakar That is a huge misunderstanding. capitalism only rewards ability to snatch more than your fair share of money, not socially useful skills. If that is the poor extent of your reflection on what a civilization should achieve.. maybe you'll become money rich thanks to your "bankable skills", but that wouldn't make you worth much.
@ludo54755 жыл бұрын
@Sudhir Kakar Life expectancy has actually been dropping for several years in a row in the US. Access to education and health-care worsened, on the account of income disparity, leaving the economically weak aside. That's what happens to people not having the right "skills" in a capitalist society where social utility is measured in economic terms only. Yet these persons inability to make money is not in anyway related to their value as members of the society. On the contrary I would say, as mentioned above,, capitalism as we let it unfold in the US promotes income inequality, by over rewarding the survival of the most short-sighted greedy kind of humans... the true plague of civilizations and the doom of the environment in the long term.

"Years ago when a city wanted a subway station they just went ahead and built one. It had tracks, some stairs and a few turnstiles but was overall pretty basic. Nobody argued about it. Nobody sued over it. Nobody tried to pull the funding when it was halfway done. It just GOT BUILT. Now you need six environmental impact statements, and the station has to spend X% of its cost on public art, Y% on union labor, and Z% with minority-owned companies or minority labor, and every person on earth has to have a right to comment on it. So there's going to be several years worth of public hearings, and a website, and then of course the thing has to maintain political favor with whatever party is in charge of the state house. So it takes a decade and $250 million just to add a station or two to the end of a line these days. That's why the government can't afford it." -- Bill_G from The Atlantic
