Shimano 105 is and always has been the best option for novice racers. I'm a DA user because I'm older and have money now (I'm a former Cat. 2 who used to race on Campy Chorus), but, if I'm being honest with myself, unless you're a pro and/or you're good enough to get bikes for free, 105 is all you need. To new racers I say: Cycling is bad for peer pressure, but don't fall for it; 105 is great, and you want to be the kind of rider that is more "go" than "show" anyhow. When you're fast enough you'll be able to get Ultegra or DA at a shop or team discount, if not for free. Train smart, stay safe and good luck!

Had a Campa for a very long time but they went mad in terms of prices for all components. Therefore I have moved to Shimano. Swapped to Shimano 105/Ultegra and I am more than happy. Far much better than Campa (especial shifting in Shimano is sooo good). Have enough thumb shifting and it doesn't destroy my wallet.

Always been and always will be a great value for money performing groupset. Looks great and I am sure it works as well as the other groupset's in the range. Just a little heavier than the more expensive ones. Thanks for another well put together professional informative video.

Эдуард Аксенов Before Sora etc, I always used to see it like 105 entry level, then Ultegra the middle ground the work horse, then the Dura Ace kept for racing. Because yes you are right as far as I am aware the metal becomes lighter but softer. The silver 105 option could work very well with a retro 11 speed bike build we do. Watch this space 👍🚲😉

I upgraded to 105 r7000 from Sora a month ago. I love it! I don't race, I just like to ride with friends and enjoy a week long fundraiser once a year so I wanted a workhorse with good performance that wouldn't break my bank. This was it in spades. I went with the widest range possible so I can swap out wheels and get on the gravel and I've had a blast. Good on you Shimano

I've had two different bikes with two different generations of 105 groupset. I recently got a nice cross bike for a good price but it came with a Sora groupset, which I figured I would upgrade to 105 when I started to wear out components. I'm still going to do that, but I have actually been pleasantly surprised at how good the Sora works compared to my previous experience with 105. That being said I am just a commuter not a racer.

I've built two bikes with the R7000 version. The new FD adjustment is great. Does away with the barrel adjuster which as Simon says eventually may cease and is an entry point for corrosion. I think performance is as good as Ultegra or so close it doesn't matter. Looking forward to the 105 vs Dura Ace video. I still prefer Campagnolo, especially the shifter operation, brake lever and hoods shape.

I just updated my 2004 Trek 5200 from its stock Ultegra groupset to this latest 105. What a massive upgrade! The hardest part was fitting an 11-speed cassette on the 9-speed rear wheel - I learned that the stock Bontrager wheels are built around unbranded DT Swiss hubs and all I needed was a new 11-speed freehub body. I now have an 18 pound bike with modern gearing, upgraded shift quality, and much stiffer crankset.

The 105 11-34 cassette is probably what will end up on my next MTB with a triple chainset. I like my gears closely spaced but still want a range from road descending to grinding up the steepest climbs, and this combination ticks all the boxes better than a more limited range and bigger gear jumps on a single chainring pushed by MTB manufacturers. The crazy thing these days is that the range on road cassettes now is wider than MTB cassettes from 10 years ago. 20ish years back 11-28 was as good as you'd get on a MTB. I suspect a modern gravel bike is better off road than many XC MTBs from back then though.

Chain rings. I have 105 on my gravel bike. Definitely impressive performance (although I don't have anything modern to compare it to). I am not to sure about the inside of the chain rings. You commented they are machined out, presumably for weight reduction. The downside of that machining is they are a massive pain to keep clean. Makes one tempted to haul out the pressure washer....

Glad to see that Shimano have now integrated Disc Brakes into 105 level now. I think that if you were to get yourself a bike with 105 or upgrade to 105 then it would definitely do everything that you would want it to do and you know that it is gonna be super reliable with the same quality that you come to expect from Shimano, plus the benefit of being interchangeable with other components. A very cool little video there Si, I am guessing that this was put onto your trusty Orbea which we have seen you do Cyclocross and gravel on? Just frame starting to show some wear but the groupset does look very pro and I think from afar you would be hard pushed to always know that it was 105 and not one of its bigger bothers! I await to see the follow up video. Cheer GCN for another cool little video!

nice one there from shimano but they have to broaden the range of cranksets downwards for gravel and adventure use. 50/34 is still ridiculously high for a lot of riders that like road bikes but they are not that fit and dont like roads that much as gravel road mix.. they should introduce 46/30 and 48/32 soon.

I cycle EVERYDAY about 35 miles (commute to work and trains) for 1 year and a half now, I own a 105 set since I first started, so heres my review: - Its an absolute amazing set that you can not have for such a low price anywhere else. - The 105 is the top notch pinpoint price/performance. - Extremely quick and easy gear change (feels like driving a ferrari using the gear pads) - Breaks are great and work as intended, even under heavy rain. - ONLY 1 cons (or maybe its not a cons and its just me), there is a huge gap in speed/cycling speed performance between 4th and 5th gear"?".. about gear numbers (but it feels like there is a cruising range, and then a racing range without middle terms) All in all this is the best you can buy by far for this price. Anything else more expensive have very small gains and not worth for the regular commuter or even average racer. edit: the 105 set I own doesnt have the disk brakes yet, so Im sure this new model is even better.

The trickle down of tech has been incredible these past few years. The more I ride, the less and less I care about gear; it's basically all better than almost all of us at this point anyway. Back in college, I was riding a bike with (then very new) Sram Force, and for four years, got my butt kicked by a guy on some ~90s Panasonic with downtube shifters. Strength is strength. I'm all for good gear, and have Ultegra on one and Force on the other, but I will freely admit that 'cheaper' 105 is just fantastic stuff. I'd be content with it.

I'm still riding my RC 6000 Raleigh 105 groupset alu bike with carbon fork, from 2008.i do have a newer bike bought in 2017 a Silverback. Then again I ride to improve my fitness and enjoyment, not for fashion or to ride the lightest bike, my raleigh rc6000 weighs in at 8.5kg it's light enough me thinks. But I do enjoy watching the newer upgrades and they are informative, and I do enjoy GCN

I split the crank cover off my ultegra 6800 after 4,041 miles and four months after the warranty expired. Kept hearing a clicking sound and after going through everything, it turned out it was the damn cover. It's not one piece--it's two-piece epoxied. Apparently, this has been happening to quite a few Ultegra and DA owners. The 105 5800 crankset is only 66 grams heavier and is only one piece, so that's what I went with to replace the bombed ultegra crank arm. I'll never buy another Ultegra or Dura Ace crankset again. I have two other 105 5800 bikes, the Ultegra bike and a DA 7800 bike. The price difference doesn't justify the upgrade, in my opinion.

One of the reasons Shimano has taken over almost all of the road bike groupset market, is products like 105. Good enough for professional racing at an affordable cost. Really wish Campy could ever design a similar product (i.e. good and cheap)

Very interesting. I just had a Trek built with the new 105 groupset and I am looking forward to picking it up next week.

I was looking at upgrading to the new Ultegra groupset on my summer bike until I saw this.....I'll stick with a new 105! Couple of hundred quid extra for 174gms saving.....105 all the way

I have been using Tiagra 4700 for a while and now I got this new 105. To be honest, both feel great and 10 or 11 speeds don't make a big difference for me, What I have really come to love is the new rear mech and brake calipers of the 105. I feel much less chain slap when going over rough terrain and the brakes feel more responsive than the Tektro ones I have on my other bike.

105, has always been one of my favorite group sets. I’ve gone to a full Ultegra set up so, I won’t be going back. But, I put 1000’s of miles on the 105 parts and they are certainly worth the investment. Maybe, when I get a new BIKE I’ll go to 105 for the group set. (:

I just picked up a R7000 gruppo for a retro/modern build on a 2004 Cannondale CAAD4 R400 in blue. It's going to be great!

I have an old 2007, I think, Diamondback Podium 2 with a 9 gear 105 set. It shifts very nicely. Since I am strictly a magnetic trainer rider its probably more than I need. It work well when I street rode.

I have it and I'm impressed. It feels "racey". Like many, I hope Shimano brings out a di2 version soon.

105 was already pretty damned good a few years ago, definitely decent value for money on factory built bikes.

Excellent review and a very nice offering from out of Sakai. As a professional bike fitter, I am glad Shimano finally have something suitable for the many who have small hands and struggle to reach the levers. Even the current Ultgera and DA series I need to adjust to the max for closeness and it is not enough. I will be recommending the 7025 shifters to many of my clients. And while here it is time for the parts manufacturers to build and bike companies to put 165 cranks on their S and XS sized frames

It's quite difficult to lay your hands on a pair of 7025 shifters to sort out whether it's smaller dimensions are beneficial to someone. And unfortunately most bikes (even those marketed towards ladies) are fitted with the regular 7020. Do you have any useful recommendations wrt hand dimensions and when to switch between 7020/7025?

After riding for years a steel bike with really old Sora stuff, I bought and built up and aluminum Giant frame with Tiagra 4700 gruppo. It’s my first time ever riding modern parts and I can say I’m totally satisfied with the performance! Maybe next year I will jump into ultegra and MAYBE di2 as well, I’m curious to see if there’s much difference between mid range and top range gruppos.

I built a bike up with Tiagra 4700 and there is nothing wrong with it. I have two 105 5800 bikes, an ultegra 6800 bike and a Dura Ace 7800 bike (I have 20 bikes total). The Tiagra shifts very well and is a bargain. As long as the bike shifts, I will ride it. I even have a couple of MicroShift bikes and they are fine--and 1/3 the cost!

The two best things they did on this group were the new front derailleur, which is the easiest derailleur style I ever install, and the new hydraulic shifters. I've worked on the old style non-series, and the feel of the braking is completely different between the two. These shifters/brake levers have the stopping feel all disc brakes should have.

Glad to see this release. The improvements to the R8000 line made Ultegra a vastly superior groupset, well worth the price difference. Now, not so much. 105 may have just returned to my circle of choices when building a bike. It was competitive right up until the R8000 line came out. Though, one item I'll always include from Dura-Ace is the disc rotors - they just look so cool - well worth the extra $15-20 over the lower series.

6:54 “the pitch of the chainrings has also been changed”. Careful there, pitch in chainrings is the distance between the teeth, that hasn’t changed ever. It’s still 1/2 inch, as the chain is. I didn’t get what you guys meant, awesome video otherwise.
