1: get a bench vise solidly mounted 2: get a good quality reaction rod and bench block 3: good quality tools (armorer’s wrench 🔧 torque adapter etc 4: well-lit bench 5: know dependencies; if you are installing an oversized bolt catch like a geissele maritime bolt catch it is easier to install trigger first (bolt catch blocks pin holes) 6: Painter’s tape, use it! don’t scratch up your receiver 7: special tools (flat-sided roll pin punch for bolt catch, trigger slave pin tool, etc) 8: Take your time and double check before starting an operation 9: tap before whacking 10: have fun, this is fun

Some advice from someone who has taken a few AR armorers classes: If you don't have a Midwest Industries upper receiver rod, get one. Many legit gunsmiths and armorers use this tool and I would consider it mandatory along with a good set of roll pin and starter punches. Not using an upper receiver rod can lead to the barrel being ever so slightly clocked. A lot of people incorrectly assume the indexing pin on your barrel will correctly align the upper to the barrel, but this is not true as there is enough wiggle room between the index pin and the gap in the upper to cause misalignment when you torque your barrel nut on. This misalignment can be bad enough for the lugs on your bolt to contact the lugs on the barrel extension as the bolt comes forward. This will lead to premature wear at best and possibly shear the lugs off your bolt if it is bad enough. There are alternatives to the Midwest Industries rod (like the Geissele Reaction Rod), but all the ones I've seen don't have the "sail" that aligns your upper to the barrel extension. Sadly, I have seen plenty of production ARs that have clocked barrels since I learned to watch for that. Almost always a budget brand rifle.

A list is great to get you to your firearm goals. Every time I go to a gun store I pull out my list on my phone so I don’t just buy random stuff with no purpose.

Great video thank you I'm actually Building a 300 black out pistol right now and it's easier for me to separate the building process into two parts first I bought everything for the upper and once that's built complete and ready to go then I move to the lower from stripped lower to all the parts that I will need and I put the parts on in a particular order as I go along because certain things cant be installed to soon until others are installed first as an example you cant install the grip if the safety selector isn't installed that's obviously something to note for the person who is doing this for the first time I've gotten tired of buying a complete AR platform and then upgrade to items that I prefer so now I custom build to my desire from muzzle devices to hinge and take down pins to 45° ambi selector switches and charging handle this way no more extra parts laying around catching dust and I got what I wanted made to my liking
