As a Yank, and a Newcastle supporter, this is a blast to watch. Our big rivalries in the US are tied to college sports (Army-Navy, Texas-Oklahoma, Michigan-Ohio State), but I loved this. And to be honest, I'm glad the day saw no real violence or dickhead moves. Well done to both sides. Howay the Lads.

I’m a Liverpool fan but I’m a big fan of the NBA but I feel like when you guys go to watch a sport it’s very similar to going to the cinema or a theatre. You go to be entertained. In Europe, it’s so much more tribal, personal and prideful in the team you support and the city you come from. Lakers fans don’t like Boston but it’s more of a kind of dislike out of success it’s not hatred whereas like Sunderland and Newcastle whether you’re a Maccam or a Geordie just a mere mention of the other party is frowned upon and I know that coz my mam is a Geordie and I’ve lived in Newcastle the last two years. Obviously, you’re American so you can probably explain it better first hand but just the intensity of the football rivalry can’t be beaten. Like for me personally there’s nothing like Manchester United vs Liverpool and I’m sure Newcastle fans would say the same for Sunderland

The history, and hatred of these two cities go, as far back as the English civil war. Royalists Vs Parliamentarians, then to ship building, and mines, etc later on. Even though alot of fans on both sides probably didn't even know this, and why some fans take this game so serious. Great question, but you can tell they didn't even know why hahaha. Anyway great win for us, and now you can all answer that question in the future 😉

As a Sunderland supporter I accept we lost but to refer to men against boys is insulting and "could" be responded to by "more money against less money". We weathered a battering up to half time and the killer goal at the start of the second half really knocked the wind out of us. I have been to many derbies in my 75 years of supporting Sunderland a generally it was to evenly matched teams with local lads playing, we will never see this again as Newcastle are now with the big boys and unless our owners sell us to even richer foreigners we are the poor relations. I know many Newcastle supporters and they are embarrassed by the wealth of the club because it is destroying the spirit and banter. The way forward is teams like Newcastle leave the Premier League and form an international Arab and Chinese money League.
