I was getting worried. What a totally realistic consequence of encountering or mishandling Boigas. I expected maybe a small injury and headache. Wow. That is scary. The 2 different bite sites really showed that it is the prolonged chewing that does damage. A beautiful snake, but not for me. I think you may also be used to snake bites and have a high pain tolerance. I would be in the fetal position for days lol. You're always taking one for the team. Another contribution to science. That's quite a big difference. Glad to see it wasn't too bad. Worse than I expected as far as visible changes, but a bit of discomfort, swelling, and a thermal change to the affected limb is worth having a better understanding of what others could possibly expect from a bite. Thanks for the sacrifice to get the knowledge, brother 🤘🤘 Now I'm kind of wanting to try it out too, to see how similar or different the experience is. You know, for scientific data collection. If you're ever around the Greenwich CT area, bring the snake along and we can do a second reaction test 😂

Nobody could give an answer if these were poisonous back in the 80's when I kept these. The couple I had was 150 - 180 cm, bred in captivity, very friendly and it was really impossible provoke them to bite. I figured that it would not be good to be caught off guard being bitten if they were poisonous so with some serum on hand, a friend and I put this to the test. Set up a good deep bite on the muscle between my thumb and index finger and held it there for a minute or two, I also had one of them to "chew" my thumb. I pretty much had the same experience as you just had. Bleeding, sore and a swelling for half a day or so. Cleaned up the mess with some disinfectant. Discolored, "bruised" skin for a few days. Really good that you documented this. These snakes are pretty and make good pets!

@@NewEnglandReptile Perhaps. "Experts" at the time claimed their poison could be as potent as that of a Boomslang. (think that came from a book we had) But there were no recorded fatalities as it was very unlikely to get poisoned thru a bite them rear fanged. Hobby herpetologists at the time mostly regarded them as harmless, but "risk of a nasty infection" if bitten. Nevertheless, one of the best "tests" I've done. No more worries about what would happen if I got bitten. For the 10 years I was into the hobby I never kept poisonous snakes, the mangrove snakes being the exception. The only reason I got them in the first place was because, at the time, I was told they were harmless. Your video certainly triggered memories of a great period of my life!

This is very similar to my Hydrodynastes Gigas envenomation. It was a 2.5” juvenile and held on for about a minute, minute and a half on my pinkie. I knew I was taking it on when it felt like a wasp sting. Within 45mins half of my hand was swollen. The swelling never left my hand, but I could feel tingling in my elbow. 12-16hrs later the swelling was gone, but the joints in my hand and wrist ached for about 2-3 weeks. I’m not allergic to anything, so the effects weren’t as severe as yours. Good research!
@NewEnglandReptile
@NewEnglandReptile 2 ай бұрын
Yes. That sounds interesting and the soreness after all swelling etc I can appreciate!!!! I think we can easily avoid the problem of envenomation but not allowing the long bites/chew and get them off quick. It’s the chewing that does it.

Back when my partner and I first moved in together, he brought 3 cats with him and one of them kind of went insane after a few months in. She started hating her sister that she had previously always gotten along with, and definitely didn't get along with my cat. They've all since passed, but back when they were still with us, and my son was around 2 years old, she just went nuts and lined at him. I have kinda superhuman reflexes, so I noticed, grabbed my son of the floor, lifted him as high as I could into the air safely, and turned my back to her to shield him from any potential attack, and attack she did. Either she was pissed I had taken her target, or I was so fast that she got me instead, but all I felt was a searing pain in my calf and a hiding and growling cat. She let go and I out my son in his room for a moment while I went to assess the damage. After my leg finished bruising, my partner (who was at work at the time) and I deduced how I ended up with a bruise the size of my entire calf. I knew it was right to because I heard her land... The cat had attacked my leg and clung on. Her weight and gravity worked to separate some of the layers of my skin. It was super painful and looked almost exactly like what your arm looks like in this video.

That sounds terrible!!!!!!! Was it a puncture as we know cat saliva is very tough on us in some cases. Damn
@paranoiarpincess
@paranoiarpincess 2 ай бұрын
@@NewEnglandReptile it was all claws. I know infection is a real possibility because cat claws are super dirty, but I disinfected the punctures and the bruise appeared pretty much immediately so there was no time for any infection to set in. It was also only bruising, no swelling, which would be super abnormal for infection.

Kevin/team, your commitment to wildlife is incredibly inspiring. The readiness to experience a snake bite showcases exceptional bravery and passion to educate. I've employed a similar approach with ball pythons, using rats to illustrate that the bites aren't as painful as feared, as well illustrating what causes the bite by allowing their scent on my hand. It's not the bite itself that instills fear, but rather the anticipation. By confronting this fear directly, my niece now confidently interacts with the snake, even hand-feeding it. She received the snake for her 11th birthday from me, and she's excelling in caring for it. In life, I've come to understand that many problems stem from a lack of information or understanding. When people aren't properly informed, it can lead to misunderstandings and complications. If everyone embraced the opportunity to educate themselves on various subjects, we would undoubtedly see improvements across the board. Knowledge has the power to bring about positive change and foster better outcomes for all. What I admire about nerds is your commitment to accuracy. You may not always rush to post, but that's because you prioritize ensuring your facts are correct. You and your team are truly remarkable, and I find great joy in watching your videos. This was a very interesting video, and also, thank you for mentioning the hog nose bite you've experience too. I always see hognose snakes, even on state websites designated as not venomous, which I think is not wise to misclassify them. It's like with Dingo, and some work he did in South America, (forgot the location,) but having a snake down there similar to the hog nose in toxicity, etc. to the hog nose, and then him having a serious allergic reaction to it's venom. I keep two rear fang snakes, Egyptian False Cobra and a Rufous Beaked Snake. The EFC is sometimes compared to Boiga for venom effects. One report for the Beaked Snake compared it to a Rattlesnake for pain, without the damage. Long sleeves and soft leather gloves when handling, for me 😅

I haven't gotten bitten by him yet, and i don't plan on it. 😅 But with the lack of well documented bites, I've always been curious what the extent of their venom would do to a person. I'm curious to see if there's any long-lasting tissue damage issues post resolution... definitely keep an eye on it, and throw us another video if you experience any semi-permanent change in sensation! Wierdly mine bit me out of nowhere a few days ago. Never been the slightest aggressive/bitey/defensive . It just randomly bit me. No idea, why. I got it off me in just a few seconds, so there can't have been much venom. There were almost no effects at all, other than (it got me on the fleshy heel of my hand) maybe a bit of muscle twitching for maybe an hour or two. But that might have just been coincidence or psychosomatic. I'm more annoyed because it was always my chilled animal to get out if anyone wants to have a closer look at one my scaley freinds. My GTP's are not for visitors, lol. But now i can't do that as i can't trust it again. I dont care about a bite, but others certainly will. Awkard bugger, lol.

Interesting outcome. Your allergies to other types of venom could explain your reaction. I’ve been bitten by several different snakes, but only had a reaction to rattlesnake venom (which is typical). Thankfully, it was only a mild envenomation, 24 hours in the hospital, two vials of antivenin, and a bit of a scar was the end result. I do remember a fair amount of pain and some swelling, but it was also 38 years ago. I find that your channel provides a decent amount of education and I’ll chalk this one up to “what not to do”. There are always the unforeseen situations that are not planned for and we deal with them as they arise. Knowing that you were already allergic to another venom did make this a little painful to watch. Glad that the reaction was not worse.

I remember seeing the after effect of a rattler bite on a store owner in the Southwest when I was a child. I’ve wondered since if he kept the hand. When I saw it it was a week or so after the bite. He sought no medical treatment and his hand was black and at least 3-4 times the size of his other hand. Nasty.

Like I said on Instagram, it was super fascinating and surprising, but we need a full on data set to form any real conclusions, so line up folks! Lets get the EpiPens ready and roll some dice! Lol (I will say any necrosis or cellulitis youd have gone to hospital. Ive had it, lost an entire finger and almost a hand, and it was the worst pain ive ever felt. And ive had Endocarditis, embolisms, multiple cases of Staph abcess etc. inflammation and adema is a bit different tho also painful of course)

Remember the rhyme Jack and Jill? Jack and Jill went up the hill To fetch a pail of water. Jack fell down and broke his crown, And Jill came tumbling after. Up Jack got, and home did trot, As fast as he could caper, He went to bed to mend his head, With vinegar and brown paper. A home remedy that's been around since at least the 1700's!

I had these back in the mid-80's. I remember that when given live rats that they seemed to subdue them more by constriction than by envenomation. Anyway a friend of mine borrowed then for a show he was going to do. When he returned the snakes he asked how "hot" these were supposed to be since he was bitten by them several times when he was handling them. I don't think he ever had any symptoms like you had mind you he had bitten by cobras way before this so could he had some immunity, IDK.

@@NewEnglandReptile The standard rep;y to they need to chew is ask Karl P Schmidt about that. Really your story makes me think to be a little more respective of these snakes. BTW I had some "flying "snakes from that importation that would take hopper mice. They showed neurotoxic symptom s when bitten. One of those snakes is shown on page 228 of Merrtens LIVING SNAKES OF THE WORLD in Color. I remember John telling me he wished I told him I had some mangroves since the only photo he could get was one with a nose rub. Really wanted to set up a paladarium with my elephant trunks in the aquatic part and mangroves in branches over the water but the state of Florida has decided to ban all Boigias.
