The bad is LO becomes the Single fking point of failure . 擒贼先擒王。

I argue that WP is popular and successful because it aligns itself firmly with three ideologies espoused by the PAP, technocracy and elitism. The popularity of Jamus Lim attests to that. Singaporeans supported him because he is a technocrat, spoke technical terms and has certainly shown the capacity to make the important decision without the need to consider individual opinion. Rather than attributing this solely to the ruling party, I argue that the general population is responsible for the current state of politics today, embracing technocratic leaderships and disregarding individual rights. If PSP stands directly against these values, I doubt it will gain much traction like WP.
@markfish1113 Жыл бұрын
No choice sg is too right wing elitism as presented by PAP. They are merely a strong representation of right wing politics. Famous cities are going more center-left wing as working class want more leaves and welfare. Unless u are Japan then u can fully embrace right wing, proud nationalism and identity. Sg dont have the same identity. PAP are in catch-22 situation, want to be right wing yet have left wing policy like floodgates open.

When TCB founded PSP, he wanted it to look like PAP, which is why PSP instead of SPP. To make themselves even more legit, they tried to bring in LHY which IMO is tasteless and upset many pioneer citizens due to his self attempt to tarnish the name of the late LKY. PSP is a one-trick pony party, the moment TCB retires (now already 80s). PSP will become irrelevant unless they are able to rope in ex-PAP members, But then again, if I want PAP to rule, why vote for copy right? Might as well vote for PAP instead.

Good Academic Points of ideals which virtually presents what politics should be and how to formulate strategies for greater voter support. Now PSP has alot of homework to transform these ideologies into practice and communicate to the rest of Singapore in 4+years time. I am sure TCB would want to hire PJ as a political strategist for the party which I had suggested months ago. PJ is an academic strategist (he by nature is reluctant to lead otherwise he would have set out his own party, but would accept and do well as a senior adviser), he needs practical political people around him to bounce his ideals to practical solutions.

Very Intellectually impressive speech by Prof Thum! My comments : 1. He said what I agree is the thinking of the garment. But given the power by the People, they do what they decide is right. Humans are not saints . The concerns raised by Thum is something not unexpected because humans are not perfect and given power can easily become what they have become. 2. Thum has not fairly point out the StakeHolders role and responsibility in a Democracy as enshrined in our Constitution. What he is saying could have Implied the People has failed to a certain extent in contributing to uphold democracy. But it's explicitly not mentioned. 3. Thum could have mentioned the mechanism of democracy which is a Participatory activity or concept . The Voters should participate actively and not behave like majority Singaporeans who play the role more like a Soldier afraid and compliant with authority or authoritarianism rather than behaving as a free human with rights to freely express their views in a responsible way. The people on paper are allowed such freedom but in effect they live in self censorship that prevents them from feeling free to express their views in a responsible manner. My point is Thum should hit the nail on the head and point out the other component of the problem and that's the people. A. If voters wait for approval to be freely express their views in a responsible manner, will they ever be granted explicit approval? This means the People should have the Initiative without which the democracy is impotent. B. A country either has democracy or it does not. It's like being transparent or it is not. Being Semi- transparent is just a play with English words to make what is not transparent to be somehow still transparent. In reality there should be another term for it. Call a spade a spade. C. The People KNOW FULL WELL all the criticisms against the govt. Many agree. But there is something about their mindset or values they subscribe to that allows them to ACCEPT these flaws or weaknesses or wrongs with the system. I call this ASIAN values. Self Preservation, Selfish Self-Interest over the society at the expense of social justice. In this regard, would it be fair to suggest the People live in absolute poverty of moral courage?

Challenging and redefining PAP’s three fundamental ideologies is a tall order for the Progress Singapore Party, but, to progress they must. We are in a situation where we know there are many flaws in the system of governance and it needed improvement without a doubt. Yes. PAP has deviated from many of their original core principles, our parents have accepted the deviations as a sacrifice in exchange for progress. But for 60+ years of independence progress to most Singaporeans meant little more than a HDB flat and some untouchable cash in CPF, stagnant salary, and the cost of living kept soaring for no apparent reason while a small group of “the selected ones” within an “inner circle” took off to Stratosphere. I think refining and redefining PAP’s three core principles would be a good start for PSP. For example how would PSP define human rights in the Singapore context that would be reasonable and acceptable, how it would view accountability should be enforced in a government, and how it proposes a Standard Operation Procedure to solving national problems. PSP had done very well in the last GE considering the fact that the party is very young. That’s a message of encouragement to PSP loud and clear and with that, we sincerely look forward to seeing PSP’s continuing mission for the good of Singapore’s future.

Truth Be Told : 1. Democracy is not merely something enshrined in the Constitution. To EFFECT it require a few elements. Example, let's say Kim Jong now announce he has enshrined democracy in its Constitution. And if not mistaken, NKorea is on paper a democracy. But EFFECTIVELY it is a dictatorship. Disclaimer : I not saying sg is a dictatorship. Why? One of the reasons is it's politically incorrect to say so. So, I easily educated Singaporeans that : 1. DEMOCRACY is not effected just because it's enshrined in the Constitution. What is not democracy or not an effective democracy is not necessarily a dictatorship. My point is, we should clearer define what is the present model. Either it is Democracy or it is not. But layman language allows blurring of the lines. It allows incorrect definitions. What is the correct model for SG and what is and has been the mindset of the Singapore majority. Kia Su, Kia si, Kia chenghu , Kia bor. What does this indicate? 2. Democracy requires People PARTICIPATIOn I terms of freedom to express views without fear. 3. Courage in the People can only come from within themselves. Cow to fear, a citizen is too poor in courage to be able to afford Democracy. So, its not about Democracy being inside the Constitution or not . It's about the People having Courage or not. If People are waiting for instruction or approval to exercise their rights, they are democratically Impotent. 4. Democracy can only exist if INITIATED BY THE PEOPLE. SOLDIERS obey instructions. They act when instructed. Democracy is not a military regiment. Therefore, the first question we need to ask is : 1. Do majority Singaporeans have strong desire for true democracy? Not having a true democracy does not mean it's dictatorship. The ROOT ISSUE is the People and not the Constitution nor the PAP. The People is the weakest link. The 99% controlled. Goliath controlled by David.

For instance, qualifications and the experience the candidate has is important to me. Furthermore, it is also important to me that the candidate is approachable and I want to see that this candidate cares about what I want. In my SMC, the opposition candidate did not even appear in my neighbourhood except one day during the election week. Whereas, the PAP candidate, I already met him and talk to him more than 7 times before the elections was even called for. So clearly I voted for the guy that I know I can approach and get help from instead of voting for someone who never ever appeared before except for 1 day during the election week. And not one religion can be debunked by the other. Neither can prove the Truth. So they base on Believing. Likewise, one party believes it's policies are the only right policies and no other policies are possible for SG such that similar success or results can be achieved. Or a better success or result is deemed not possible even though this cannot be proven absolutely. This is borne out of Bias and intellectual dishonesty. Many solutions can solve the same problem.

Like to sneak in a thought I like viewers to consider : 1. The Claim that Singapore succeeded without Natural resources. I like to prove this is not true. It glorifies someone only. *Debunk this:* A. Is a ROCK a natural resource? Yes. B. Is an Island made of Rock a natural resource? Yes C. Is sg island made of rock a natural resource a creation of nature? Yes D. Is the geographic location of Singapore the natural resource an attribute of the natural resource? E. Can this Attribute exist without the Natural resource? No. They are two of the same. They are mutually dependent for their existence. The island SG if located elsewhere is not SG. The location cannot be where it is if not for the existence of the natural resource that is the island. F. Can PSA attract the same high number of maritime traffic if not for where sg is located? If sg were in mainland of China, no ships will go there because it's not coastal. SG can do other things in that scenario of course but the ships of the world will not have visited SG even if Elvis Presley were the pm. One may argue, the ships could have berthed at Malaysia opposite SG. True. Sg performed or executed better . But what is my point here? Which comes first? Even if Einstein were our PM , so many ships of the world would not have come to our ports. There could be a few ships but not this volume. G. Could SG ports have prospered the way it did if not for the natural resource? If not could SG have prospered the way it did without the sg port? Conclusion: SG is blessed with natural resource worth it's weight in oil.
@arrowstheorem18814 жыл бұрын
@Morning Coffee As I had suggested , the port prosperity could have gone to Malaysia but SG did a better job. But if she were an island elsewhere the same number of ships would not have visited for the same purposes because that's the most economical route. This is despite who is the leader. So, yes competence is a factor but without the geographic location it would have been a different port.

Honestly I'm enlightened by this speech overall. Even though I do support WP and feel that the points he made about them in this speech are right, the fact is that progress for the opposition would have taken much more time for a breakthrough without WP. As many people have said, people in Singapore like the status quo, so it's highly unlikely for a major shift in power. If the WP chooses to so as to what he claimed 'double down on the issue of race' in Singapore, they may lose the support of the people since people in Singapore may see them as too far off left. I'm sure the WP wants to make the people's lives better so maybe they should watch this to improve and lastly, I think the PSP really has to build on it's own identity and show to the people that it is equal of if not better than PAP or WP because now, it's unique identity is not very outstanding.

His present status came from a conducive environment provided by the country that has grown from strength to strength even with the pandemic going on.
@gabrielsoo29394 жыл бұрын
It's not really contradictory. He is invited to speak to the PSP not speak for them. The ability to invite speakers to speak opinions that may not be fully in line with your organization's stance is demonstrative of the organization's ability to accept differing view points.

The Worker party has adopted the right strategy by being moderate during the past elections. if they are too radicals they would not have won10 seats. Looking at SDP and PV, they have failed to win any seats. SDP realised it and in recent elections they have moderate their tone. However having said that in the next election in 2025, they could adopt a more combative style with the PAP because the PAP failing to manage the country economy. Changing circumstances need changing strategy. Perhaps Lim Tean strategy might work in 2025

I do not think that there is a need to recast a new system to replace the current one altogether. The present system still works to a large extent, and can, by and large, deliver. The system is derived from a Westminster form of pluralist democracy predicated upon universal sufferage. The objections from the populace are not per sé against the system. Rather, the disgruntlement is with the several parts of the system that have been maligned, or in short, broken. The country's mission statements call for a fairer, more equal and just democracy. The current adjusted political system adopted by today's leaders will not deliver a just, equal and democratic Singapore. All the main Opposition parties should have a common objective to repair a broken system and to provide alternative political leadership to enable the nation bring truth to its existing mission statements recited daily though the voices of the country's school children. All this starts with opposition adhesion and dedication to common opposition political objectives. Routes may differ, but return to sound principles of governance must form the common bond. The populace must be educated to understand that Singapore has a broken system in dire need of repair.

I suggest that you to listen to the speech again with an open mind. PJ did not once suggest that PAP voters are "without values". Indeed, he mentioned that the PAP operates on three core tenets/fundamental principles, namely 1) the people have privileges and not rights; 2) politics as rule by a moral and technocratic elite; and 3) policies are technocratic and "value-neutral" and not a product of a contestation of values and ideas. To credibly refute his claims, you can either (a) argue that his three characterizations of the PAP are inaccurate/do not reflect PAP's style of governance; or (b) show why we should stick to PAP's three core tenets of governance. We really need more constructive discourse in times like these and people like PJ should not be pilloried simply because they are opposed to the establishment.
