I say this as an unbiased Steelers fan who had no rooting interest in this game, Pittsburgh was terrible during this season. The Bucs defense was so great in 1999 that they really didn’t need a top flight quarterback or an elite offense, just a run of the mill competent offense would have done the job. The Bucs defense played as close to a perfect game as possible, forced three turnovers and held one of the best offenses in NFL history to 11 points, with the Tampa Bay offense gifting the Rams a safety, so essentially they only conceded 9 points. Everyone remembers the Bert Emanuel play but if you dig a little deeper, the true story is revealed. In this game, FOUR TIMES the Bucs offense got to start a drive in the Rams side of the field because of how their defense was able to force turnovers and shut down the Greatest Show on Turf. And the results of those four drives? Field goal, punt, punt, interception. To not be able to punch it into the end zone one time is shameful with that kind of advantage in field position. Shaun King was dreadful. One of the most anemic offensive performances ever in a conference championship game. If I’m a Bucs defensive player at the end of that game, I’m absolutely livid at the offense.

The 1999 Rams came out nowhere. They had no winning seasons since 1989. Acquired a new quarterback in the 99 offseason who gets hurt in the preseason. A shame that there offense couldn't even spot them a TD. On a sidenote, Marshall Faulk had one of the greatest but rather forgotten RB seasons in NFL history in 99, becoming the 2nd player in NFL history to rush and receive for over 1,000 yards (Only 3 RB's have ever done this, Roger Craig, Faulk and Mccaffrey). I would put Faulk's Ram 3 year stretch (99-01) up against any all-time RB's greatest 3 year stretch. He was IMO the best overall player in the NFL during this 3 year run.

I do agree to an extent, whether the Bucs scored a touchdown or not is a completely different argument, however by that point, the Rams defense was completely exhausted and were on their heels, so if Tampa Bay could’ve gotten the ball into a 1st and goal situation, they maybe could’ve punched it in with Alstott. I had no faith in Shaun King being able to throw a touchdown pass in this situation, I believe he had thrown a grand total of 7 all season.

Were they? I mean it's the Bucs offense with a rookie QB. If they did this to a better offense, than it'd be impressive.

@@tiotito31 They were good, but the Bucs offense might have been the worst offense in a playoff game ever.

My rule of thumb is this: If you have a top 5 offense or defense, then the other side of the ball just has to be average. Your Special Teams have to be good regardless. In the case of the Bucs under Dungy, if our offense was at least average, we would’ve gotten past the Rams and could’ve beat the Titans in the Super Bowl. But that was always Dungy’s Achilles heal when he was coaching our team: he didn’t hold the offense to the same standard as he held the Defense. Warren Sapp even said he felt like it was a disservice to the Defense due to the ridiculously high standard Dungy held them to. John Lynch said that there was tension because of the double standard, and Derrick Brooks said that the team wasn’t really investing much to improve the offense. As a lifelong diehard Bucs fan, I respect Dungy for turning our team around and making us competitive and respected, at the same time his philosophy was what forced the issue for the Glazers to fire him, and to make the drastic move they made to bring in Gruden. It had to be done, or else while we would’ve had more playoff appearances under Dungy, it’s hard to believe that we would’ve won a Super Bowl if Dungy was never fired. After all, in the last 2 Playoff games we had with Dungy, the Eagles handled us well and made it look easy (21-3 in 2000, 31-9 in 2001)

The thing I loved about this game was during the week, EEVVVEEVVVERRRYONE didn't think the bucs stood a chance. Joe Theismann stated that this was the worst game match up and the Rams were going to completely destroy the bucs. He said something like "this is a joke" but I am not quoting him. I cannot recall exactly what he said, but I remember it pissing me off like "who the F are you". And that defense held them to 11 points.. Which was absolutely insane because they avg'd like 33 points per game.

I was driving across the country during this game and listening on the radio. I remember the broadcasters saying it was a catch then they were shocked when they called it incomplete. I didn't see the play so I had no idea how it looked. The broadcasters were very vocal about the bad call on the broadcast.

17:37 and that is so ironic because Tampa Bay played zone defense they rarely ever blitzed they were about as discipline a defenses it gets and on that play that they decide to go ham with the blitz they get beat that's cruel irony

The fact that the Buccaneers defense kept going full speed the entire game and playing at the top of their game makes it a shame that their quarterback could not capitalize on all of their efforts
