NiCd, Nickel-Cadmium Battery Teardown

This is another battery teardown in which I take a look closer at rechargeable Nickel-cadmium batteries also called NiCd. Despite the fact that Nickel-cadmium batteries were banned for their toxicity at least in the European Union, you can still find them in old tools and devices. You will see in the video that it was quite challenging to take them apart and I had to use even a power tool.

if you put that "nickel oxide" in salted vinegar, the vinegar will turn pink, & foam will be stuck on the oxide.

The black stuff is cadmium oxide pasted onto a strip of nickel. The other perforated strip was nickel.

I'm guessing a regulations regarding limit use different in different countries. I believe they can be found in some solar powered garden lamps that recharge the batteries during the day. I actually bought some brand new nickel cadmium batteries using some vintage camera flashes.

Why do you prefer this type of batteries?

@@zeroampselectronics normally I don't. Nickel metal hydride batteries damaged a few of my vintage camera flashes. I just like the nickel cadmium in the camera flash because the recycle time of the Flash is quicker over the alkaline batteries.

One time I have opened ni CD battery but the alkaline fluid burn my some skin

what about toxic? Many of battaries leak after some time. How much Cd is inside? Can one battery hit the liver?

Nah. Just not healthy is all.. but do not feel anxious about a single button cell.. now mercury is worse than cadmium however. But still be aware it is a heavy metal that is not good for the kidneys but idk for the liver.. regardless I would avoild eating it.

Why is cadmium so cheap even though it's just as rare as silver?

I suspect it's because it's toxic. In some countries it's also banned in new products. Nobody wants it.

Well,have you watched thoisoi video about sains...it have many information about elements...and also cadmium toxic and has low melting point and also like zinc protective layer...I just like sains and I still in high school...education is important to me. Nickel...very magnetic elements...and I need this elements for my collections...and yeah I have nickel cadmium battery but I not open inside it yet...if I want to I just do outdoor. Also mercury is liquid metal and use in battery but I forget what video that I watch about what inside mercury battery...anyway see you later...ok bye. :-)

You can get 99% nickel from welding electrodes. pure iron and pure nickel: other than being ferromagnetic they have few similarities as far as material properties.
