Lessons learned from software development that applies here: common courtesy indicators/colors will never be accurate when the lowest bidder did the last rush job. You can expect to track down the sum of everyone elses short cuts. Humans will always make a fool of hardware to software interfaces. Never quote a job without padding for the unexpected. You did very well, kid. Keep up the quality work.

Is there any law that says there has to be heat detectors in the classrooms rather than smoke detectors? Do they put Heats for a reason or does it just not matter?
@nics-systems-electric8 ай бұрын
It's a direct one for one replacement and a smoke detector is not required in the classroom so it's cheaper to do heat detectors

Have had to swap devices at some schools in my district, and some of the older ones have horrible wiring just like this school. Surprised this one had it even in the '70s, as all of our schools built 70s onward have the correct polarity. Only the ones in the '60s have awful wire coloring. Weirdly, for whatever reason, polarity was like 95% correct in the school built in 1959, so I don't know how they went from good to horrible in about 2 years. Maybe it's just a different code thing or something, as I'm down in Wisconsin.

Why are you replacing bells with horns? There's nothing wrong with bells. The only reason I can think of is that they die after a few years.
@achannelwithnopurpose19778 ай бұрын
System is no longer under grandfathered code. The newest revision of the fire code now applies as the system is being replaced and that does technically mean that a new system is installed which means you have to use the most recent fire code revision applicable and that code says synchronized horn-strobes that are 15db over ambient and use temporal 3 for signal coding are required.
@nics-systems-electric8 ай бұрын
Because they need to be compatible listed devices and reliability is important when some of the bells are failing and you get lower draw with horn strobes and it is known model so easier for any calculations that need to be done
@adamcrane14368 ай бұрын
Hello @@nics-systems-electric
@mimi28 ай бұрын
Also it wasn't nicks decision what devices to put up That would be the contractors. And it's cheaper to install horn strobes vs bell strobes. Both due to the device itself being costly, and because you might need more nac booster panels.
@jimstettler34458 ай бұрын
current code requires speakers in K thru 12. They can be separate intercom or integrated in the fire alarm system. Regarding bells, they aren't as noticable

how do you replace things like pulls and bells and not get zapped by exposed wires
@nics-systems-electric8 ай бұрын
Fire alarm is low-voltage
@KanoaDeCastro8 ай бұрын
Wow! That wiring really is just awful. For the gym pull stations, given how toghtly they fit in the original backboxes, what if you used a backbox made specifically for those pulls? This would provide better space and prevent that broken resistor. (By a backbox, im talkikg sbout turning the stations surface mount)
@nics-systems-electric8 ай бұрын
It could be done if necessary however we try not to in the gyms it's the same reason that the pull stations are recessed in the new builds. Metal object like fire alarm and other electrical devices can leave nasty injuries in gymnasium from people running into them especially in an elementary school where they can be at face level for the students so we usually try and keep all objects as close to the wall as possible in gyms
@KanoaDeCastro8 ай бұрын
@@nics-systems-electric I completely understand that. As far as the injury concern, do kids still get injured from those metal pulls? If so, perhaps a good STI stopper can help prevent that due to it's rounded corners.
@drum-corps-fan8 ай бұрын
@@KanoaDeCastromight be regulation thing, I know some jurisdictions that don't allow stoppers for "lowering the simplicity of effectively operating the pull station" I think this regulation is kind of BS, given that you have to have an IQ of probably below 40 to not know how to lift a cover.

@eDoc20208 ай бұрын
Mixed up wiring seems to be a common issue in replacement installs. You'd think they'd just make the addressable devices polarity-insensitive to make it easier. I _think_ the addition of a ten cent bridge rectifier would make this possible but I'd need to know the details of the signaling to be sure.
