I've used many sensor sizes (MFT to full frame) in pro, semi pro and hobby work. It's all too easy to seal yourself in a bubble and forget that there are many others doing professional work with equipment you wouldn't consider using yourself. I'm 75 and long since retired but, i still refuse to become part of one companies tribe. I use some new mirrorless equipment, some 10+ year old DSLR equipment, some 17 year old CCD sensor equipment, etc. As long as the box produces the image I want and stays out of my way its all good in my book. I don't care who made it, what it cost, what size sensor or, when it was made. Too much of photography has become what i call "Peacockery" these days. You know what i mean? If y'all don't strut the same strut then you're just a mutt - LOL.

In many ways, the D7100 already has many of the same characteristics of many full frame cameras, and is extremely well built. In fact, it is quite arguably the best ever DX format camera made by Nikon. And you don't start to notice much of a difference in megapixels between a 24 megapixel camera, and a 35 or 45 megapixel camera, until you can compare extreme size enlargements, and a 20 by 30 inch print hardly fits into the extreme size category. The only serious complaint I can think of is the photographers who need a very large buffer memory before the camera can save to a memory card in order to do fast motor-drive style photography.

Extremely happy with my D810, it's still an awesome camera for its age. I plan to mostly do portraits and studio work with it, until I can afford to step up to a Z7ii in the future.

I still love my D810, but I also am looking at eventually getting the Z7II when it drops a little further in price. I also have the D700, D3s, D500, and a Z5. I just fall in love with my cameras and have trouble letting go.🤷‍♂️

Great job! I would relabel all DX format cameras as prosumer grade. There I said it. The D810 which I own is semi-pro grade, in my opinion. I have owned pro cameras such as F2AS, F3HP, F4s, F5, D1x and D5. For a 2nd backup I used FM2 and D810. Back in the day, these labels were popular also with video camcorders as well. All very capable in the right hands. I get more stability at slower speeds with the heavier cameras. F3 with MD4 battery pack uses AA cells and last for thousands of shutter clicks. My D810 has an external battery pack. Now my D810 and D5 share the same battery. I get 3500 shots with these batteries before I think about replacing them. My fav film camera is the F5 which uses AA cells. I gave my second F5 to my grand-daughter since she was interested in film. She also has the D750 full frame. Get a mono-pod if weight is a problem. The heavier cameras will probably out-live you. Can't say that for the lighter cameras. Life long Nikon user. I've also owned Canon F1, F1n film cameras as well. The Nikon Matrix metering is flawless in my opinion and keeps me with Nikon. My needs are simple: a) two card slots; b)14 bits; c) long battery life (external battery pack); d) able to mount AIS lenses; e) screw drive for older nikon screw drive lenses. These require a heavier camera body such as the D810 and D5. Can't go wrong with the D810/850 digital or the F5 film camera. If you must have a DX camera, the D500 is it. You will never outgrow these cameras. My two cents.

That is a senseless statement. We are talking about the cameras themselves, not who is using them! I’m am sick of people using this irrelevant statement. Watch a different video if you want to say that! I am a pro (who may be better than you) and I want a pro camera for the durability and reliability in daily use, plus the advantages in functionality and image quality. If you are a pro sports shooter you buy a D5, not a D7100! * The D7100 is designed for amateurs or maybe students, NOT professionals. Nikon has been designing cameras for decades to fit a particular purpose. They know what they are doing!

@williamblackwell9558
@williamblackwell9558 5 жыл бұрын
I made that $2000 up in one job with my D810. The D7100 could have never done the job because it was a very low light event that no flash was allowed . The D810 is in another league compared to the D7100 . Only someone inexperienced would take the D7100 over the D810. If you are a pro and using the D7100 as your main body you will need to rent a full frame body on certain jobs because APSC cameras are handicapped in low light .

+bals dave Good choice - lenses will last for a long time - a body comes down in price and is almost worthless (price-wise) after 3-4 years - while you can still own a 10-15 year old lens which will cost 70% of what you paid originally (sometimes more but these are rare cases).

Full frame is not better it is far superior to APSC cameras . In perfect light of course you can get a great photo but when you are a pro and need to take photos in every situation a (APSC ) crop camera will not do the job . In low light situations an crop camera will not get the job done . If you are getting paid $1500 to shoot an event you have to be ready for any situation so that means having at least one full frame camera ready at all times.

@LensVid

Igor M No, not all aspects. It is heavier and larger (the D610/D750 are close to the D7100/D200 but still a bit larger and heavier), it requires FF lenses which are larger and more expensive (on the D810 you can use crop lenses and still get O.K. resolution but you are still better off with a crop camera to begin with) and most wildlife and bird photographers still prefer crop cameras. So no - they are not better all around - they simply have better IQ and especially better sensitivity - although to be honest with the latest sensor technology crop is good enough for about 90% of all situations.

@LensVid

Igor M FX has its advantages. for a landscape photographer a camera like the D810 is amazing. However for a bird photographer - not that much (although some use it of course). For portraits it is a great camera - however for sports - not that much. So it really depends on what you are doing. Again for most photographers a camera at the D7XXX level is good enough for about 90% of the uses. Some photographers who need that extra 10% will go for an FX. Oh, b.t.w. later this year we will (eventually) see a D300S replacement - image quality won't be at the level of the D750 but it should be better than existing DX cameras - so the gap between DX and FX will be even smaller.

Than you definitely have large hands :) it will be a combination of the D7200 and the D500 (mostly the sensor, 4K and the screen).
@Vidas666
@Vidas666 7 жыл бұрын
How about the price, do you think D500 will outmatch D7300? Well about 4k, for shooting sports only in pictures, got no time for 4k nor 1080 :-). I see on eBay market d4 getting look pinnacle to those who are most working on pictures in low budget.
@LensVid

The D7300 will cost around 1200-1300 compared to around 2000 USD for the D500 - quite a difference.

Thank you. Look, our point is that if you have been using a D7100 you will feel pretty much at home with a D810 - there are a few differences of course but much of the basics are, well - pretty similar (it doesn't mean that the D810 doesn't have some significantly improved features - but still).

We still use the D7100 that you see in this comparison (although with all the gear that we are reviewing all the time we use quite a few other cameras as well), later this year we hope to switch to either the D500 or the A6300 or both.

I was considering counting the usage of the unnecessary long naming of the camera's, namely the Seven Thousand One Hundred (Sorry, I forgot the D) the D Seven Thousand One Hundred and the Eight Hund.. (Sorry) the D Eight Hundred and Ten, but I thought, that would be daft as it's obvious he's taking the piss, Right?
@randytesch7664

I have had the "D Eight Ten" for over a year and the "D Eight Hundred" for over three years. I would trade neither for any other DSLR. The crop sensor Nikons cannot take full advantage of the exceptional lenses Nikon designed for full frame sensors. These would include the 70-200mm f/2.8, the 14-24mm f/2.8, and 105mm f/1.4 (to have a crop sensor effectively add a 1.5 multiplier to these focal lengths makes them less useful and is shameful). I could not quite get to the very end of your video because I could not stand to hear you repeat any more ad nauseam "D Seven Thousand, One Hundred" and "D Eight Hundred and Ten".

I am not getting the purpose of this review, just listing what it's obvious: - one is full frame one is not, - one is professional directed, one is semi-professional - one weights more and one less ... This video does not provide any advice to who is thinking of moving from D7100 to full frame...

@cmattarei
@cmattarei 9 жыл бұрын
LensVid What I am saying is that if you compare DX and FX cameras of same brand and same generation, then what you expect is better iso, shallower DOF, more weight, and so on. But all of these aspects are just obvious considerations. It's like comparing a truck to a car and stating that the car is faster. What I expected from this review was something that you cannot easily infer, like what you are going to miss by switching to a D810, and what you are going to appreciate.
@IddoGenuth
@IddoGenuth 9 жыл бұрын
Cristian Mattarei They are not from the same gen (the D7200 is from the same gen as the D810) but that isn't that important (and we mention the D7200 in the written review). As for what you are saying - I don't think that all of this is so obvious to every D7100 user (it might be to you), also things like menu differences are definitely not obvious, the actual AF speed and sensitivity is also a huge difference we found (the fact that a company said that camera X has better AF doesn't mean that this is the case in real life - and this is why we actually tested these things).

You can use your iPhone for a pro shoot (and that was done many times in the past). With that said, there are cameras which are considered to be "pro level" by the manufacturer itself. For Nikon and Canon the D5/1DX MKII lines are the top pro bodies and the D850 (in this case D810) and 5D MK IV are one level below but still considered pro cameras by Nikon/Canon. The fact that a non Pro user can buy and shoot with these cameras (or that a Pro can shoot with a much less expensive body) doesn't mean anything in this respect.

I guess you can also use your iPhone as a pro camera (in the sense that you can shoot a commercial and get payed for it - and I am sure it had been done) but nobody in their right mind will call an iPhone a pro camera and the D7100 is also not a pro camera - it is a prosumer/mid-range camera at best.
@MrPetebuster1
@MrPetebuster1 7 жыл бұрын
Lensvid far more people use crop cameras for professional work than you obviously realise, this entry level , prosumer, pro level labels are just marketing words, quality of photography is knowing how to use the gear more than what it is, if you capture the moment you'll get paid whatever you use, no one asks what camera it was. Last year a new york magazine had its front cover picture taken with an iPhone so yes that became a pro picture, no chance of that happening to the ignorant amateur that thinks they need full frame. If you don't know what your talking about learn about photography before making stupid comments
@LensVid
@LensVid 7 жыл бұрын
As a person who owns a D7100 AND shot paid videos using it I still don't call it a pro camera - no matter what you will say. This is also not how Nikon refers to it. And again you can use any camera for shooting paid work - it does not turn the camera into a pro level camera.
@MrPetebuster1
@MrPetebuster1 7 жыл бұрын
+Lensvid well you don't seem to understand what professional means then, if your getting paid and using a particular tool it's a professional tool regardless of what anyone wants to call it, most cameras are capable of professional photography, names mean nothing. Professionals use ff and crop for different purposes, not because one produces better image quality. One of the main reasons they use ff is bigger prints, the trouble is KZbin and other media give out so much bullshit that people believe, then they convince themselves they need ff and save their money spend a fortune on ff and lenses and guess what? They still take crap pictures and that goes for a lot pro's to. 10 years ago there was a massive difference between ff and other sensors but nowadays the difference is very minimal, it's about knowing how to take good photographs, not what gear you have but KZbin certainly has turned people into developing gear aquasition syndrome . No point upgrading your gear and not your skills which is what most people do.

I understand the term perfectly but it can have different meanings in different context. In THIS context - i.e. comparing two cameras from the same manufacturer - the D7100 is NOT a pro body and the D810 is (which is also how Nikon itself looks at the cameras - actually historically Nikon classified only the top model - currently the D5 as PRO body - but I think that the D810 can still be considered PRO even by Nikon's standard's these days).
