I gotta wonder how many kids were conceived back in the 90's to this song. NIN is considered industrial.
@DavidMiller-dt8mx7 жыл бұрын
As much as I've enjoyed NIN over the years, it's love/hate. NIN was in so many ways the death of industrial music. I never really considered NIN industrial unto itself, just industrial influenced. Frankly, NIN is polished, clean, and melodic compared to the totally experimental, random and raw industrial that came before it - see early SPK, Laibach, Einsturzende Neubauten, and of course TG.

Nine Inch Nails is Industrial Rock. This song was performed and written, as most of their songs, by Trent Reznor. Trent did the vocals, guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, synthesizers, and programming. The Perfect Drug is an excellent song for you to try from NIN. The official video lends its imagery to the music quite well, if you are so inclined. Plus the drum break in that song is lit AF! It's truly awesome to see your reactions to great music like this. It reminds me of myself discovering these bands when I was your age. Nine Inch Nails is considered to be "Industrial" which is similar to but quite different from heavy metal. They have an extensive catalog of great music spanning decades. Many have already mentioned great tracks. "Hurt". "Closer", "Hey Piggy". "Mr. Self Drstruct". "Only", "Wish" and these are others as well. NIN has been around for long enough (30 years now! Egad!) and covered so much ground that it's hard to pick out just one song. One favorite is "All Time Low" from a more recent album, Hesitation Marks. It's so tempting to pick something, anything from another album besides The Downward Spiral. But I'm to be perfectly honest, "The Becoming" is possibly my favorite song of all time. Leading into that, I think "Ruiner" (the song immediately following "Closer") has my favorite production of any recorded song. The way all of the elements come together is just -- 25 years later, I'm still picking it apart and learning something new every time I hear it. His least popular album, With Teeth, is one of my favorites. It's an experimental one for him, where he strips away all his crutches and tries to write simple rock music for once. His fans resent it because it sounds so different from his earlier work and lacks all the layering and nuance of, say, "Closer," but it's basically Reznor trying to reclaim his life after he just about died due to his life choices. So the whole thing is basically this stunned version of Reznor, wondering what to do from here, and it's one of the bravest things he's done, creatively. The confusion and uncertainty are so palpable.

Nine Inch Nails has a 30 year catalog and you can virtually start anywhere you want. Just go into the music with an open mind and see what you get out of it. To sum up each release as follows to get a general idea of what you're going into: Pretty Hate Machine (1989) Industrial synth-pop dance rock album about Trent's angst about life, love, religion, regret, and sex. Broken EP (1992) Industrial metal/rock album about Trent fighting his record label over artistic rights and the fallout of new found fame; first release with Interscope after leaving TvT records The Downward Spiral (1994) a concept album exploring the self destruction of a man to his eventual suicide The Fragile (1999) Similar to 'The Downward Spiral' but sonically more experimental and art rock; exploring loss and struggling to live With Teeth (2005) rebirth of Nine Inch Nails; Pretty Hate Machine 2.0; Trent became sober and the album is more song based and introspective Year Zero (2007) another concept album that presents the listener with an alternate reality of America by the year 2022 under an oppressive government and fighting back; final album with Interscope Records Ghosts I-IV (2008) dark ambient meets classical music; cinematic scores; highlighted Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' work into film years later with The Social Network, The Girl With Dragon Tattoo, Gone Girl, Before the Flood, Patriots Day, and The Vietnam War; first release as an independent artist under his new label The Null Corp. The Slip (2008) released for free and still is; garage band style with electronics and ambiance Hesitation Marks (2013) a reflection of the past and experimenting with new styles; definitely the grooviest Nine Inch Nails album thus far. Returned to major label with Columbia Records Not The Actual Events EP (2016) and Add Violence EP (2017) the first EP from Nine Inch Nails in 24 years; a trilogy of EP's with a third slated for the end of this year. Atticus Ross joining the band as it has been Trent's project for almost 30 years. Post 2016 world with heavy lyrics and guitars; an accumulation of all works into three EP's. And remember, have fun ;)

NIN is definitely Industrial. A very general category attributed to them is Alternative (from the 90s classifications), but - to me (and most NIN fans, I'm assuming) - Industrial is their genre. As far as a great NIN track, I think going earlier in their discography is the only way to start. Maybe "Head Like a Hole" or "Down in It" (off their first album, Pretty Hate Machine). Also, "Wish" and "Gave Up" off Broken are among my favorites of all-time. Love NIN! Thank you for bringing them into the rotation!

So on your question as to NIN's sub genre. That's a Great question. Trent Reznor who started the band and is basically the whole band, started by being influenced by synth pop Human League, Soft Cell, and Gray Numan. In the early days they were well known for their live cover of Sex Dwarf by Soft Cell. As time passed Trent went for darker themed music. He has never left his synth roots, as a matter of fact all his albums are primarily synth based, drawing most sounds from a Minimoog synthesizer. As for genre. He is often put under the genre Industrial. Though some of his records are definitely under the genre of electronic. He is the fulfillment of the genre as it was pioneered by acts like Throbbing Gristle, and Cabaret Voltair almost a decade before Nine Inch Nails existed.

So cute you reacted to a song that was released when I was a freshman. In high school.

The single itself has been sampled various times, most famously by Limp Bizkit in the song “Hot Dog”, which also parodies other NIN songs: “The Perfect Drug” and “Burn”. Whilst the song discusses becoming “closer to God”, it is seemingly about sexual fulfillment, which Reznor equates to “being in heaven” or close to a religious experience. In the context of the rest of the song, the sex appears to be a form of escape from depression, like a drug. However, rather than necessarily being about sex, the whole song could also likely to be written in the same vein as the main theme for the album - self-loathing, depression and the road to suicide. In this case, the lyrics could be a discussion between Trent’s conscious and sub-conscious, or id and super-ego. Either way, it is a cool anthem about struggles with identity, abuse and belonging.

I love your hair 😊. Also, as for my favorite Nine Inch Nails song? I'm afraid that's hard to choose.

Congrats on 7K subs; I know others have already said it, but you should watch the music video as it's interesting to say the least.

So, this is what Al Jourgensen from Ministry called “Trent’s Prince Song”. “Salvation through sex” is an old time blues theme. In this case, it’s industrialized.

If you like early NIN, Tackhead and SkinnyPuppy might be worth looking into. Pretty Hate Machine and Downward Spiral was a juggernaut of early 80s funk and hip-hop influences (some even rip offs, Closer being almost entirely comprised of a heavily edited disco loop), this is how he made "Industrial" accessible to the US market / masses. Sisters of Mercy, Public Image Ltd (Best known for Johnny Rotten from Sex Pistols fame) or Killing Joke's "Love Like Blood" things in that vein of what was downstream from culture in the period.

Now here's the twist. Imagine a room full of screaming girl singing this at the top of their lungs. Yes, it did happen. You need to here their first release "Head Like a Hole"

'Closer' has been played probably at least once a day in every strip club in the entire world for well over a decade. Strippers love it because the rhythm and beat works well for dancing.

They are industrial. Their breakout song and video that made people take notice to shock rock was "Head Like A Hole." Check out the young Trent Reznor.

It's an Industrial style. The song that first got me in NIN was "Something I Can Never Have" off the album Pretty Hate Machine (most NIN fans would celebrate that as one of NINs top 10 songs): kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmS3iqdqo8uFppo As far as my favorite NIN song, it depends upon my mood... Closer is defiantly on my top 5 for NIN... I love the raw dirty kink of it... mood music... for the kind of mood you were thinking about when you first heard the chorus... and I love that line it ends on... "You get me closer to God!"

The closet genre core that I think you can link NIN to is 'industrial.' Industrial with experimental alternative metal and definitely some funk elements in there in this song Closer. ..electronic... Trent Reznor is a production genius. His sound was the main sonic influence of Kanye Wes'ts album Yeezus.

I don't know if anyone commented this, but NIN is industrial rock. A genre which fuses elements of hard rock, electronic music, metal, and sometimes funk and hip hop (though not as often) elements. Trent Reznor(founding brainchild of the band) was very heavily influenced by artists such as Depeche Mode and Tears For Fears.

NIN is usually descriped as industrial metal. Any thing off of Pretty Hate Machine you cannot go wrong with, but for me Happiness in Slavery, Head Like Hole, and Closer are the definitive NIN tracks. You may also enjoy a German band called Rammstein (Du Hast, Engel, Mein Teil, and Keine Lust are all great tracks)
