This is the video I show to everybody when they say herping the U.S. is boring. Every snake you found was beautiful and it really opened up my eyes to herping when I initially got into it.

My dad taught me that the best way to get rid of stinging nettles is run to the nearest creek and rub sand/gravel on your skin where the nettles got you, then wash it off with creek water. Saved my life so many times! Good luck with herping!

Awesome video man! Great Mud snake and pigmies! If you're ever in Southwest Missouri for any reason, there are some roads out this way where seeing a Pigmy in August/September is a piece of cake.
@JDB25522 жыл бұрын
I’ve been greatly enjoying your videos. It’s been over 30 years since I’ve been able to spend a day looking for snakes here in northern Illinois, but on a good day day back then I would sometimes find several Great Plains garter snakes and Chicago garter snakes, the local subspecies of eastern garter snake. Northern brown snakes were pretty common, back then their common name was DeKay’s snake. Once I saw a red-bellied snake. Our local rat snakes are fox snakes. Near water were northern water snakes and once, a queen snake. Smooth green snakes were once pretty common, but sadly I haven’t seen or heard of anyone else seeing one locally for over 20 years. I’ve been told suburban expansion and lawn pesticides are to blame, and there still may be some In undeveloped farm areas. According to the guide books, milk snakes and hognose snakes lived in our area, but I’ve never seen one or heard of anyone else seeing one locally. Likewise, our only rattlesnake is the eastern massasauga, but I’m not aware of any reliable report of any ever found in McHenry County, although not too far east, by the DesPlaines River, they weren’t uncommon. Our turtles are midland and western painted turtles and snapping turtles mostly. Once I saw a stinkpot, and once a very large dead softshell of undetermined species. I’ve often seen little snorkel noses of what I presume to be other softshells poking up out of the water, so I think they’re still pretty common, but I have no other details. Blanding’s turtles were ridiculously common 30 years ago, sometimes I’d see several in one day, even nearly a mile from the water, but now they’re endangered locally. We have no lizards that I’ve seen or heard reported. Keep up the good work with the videos!

I'm from Missouri and I loved as a kid going out to the local creek to find all the different types of herps we had. Never got to see a mud snake, but I love seeing a video from my state to see what kind of snakes ya found. Where exactly in the state were you guys looking for these herps?
@angnst66642 жыл бұрын
You posted this a year ago so I don't know if you will see this, but herps are incredibly sensitive to poaching, and a lot of people just wants snakes dead in general, so most people who do this don't give away locations to the internet because of this. Also, he has a couple hundred thousand subs, and if too many people visit that place, it would become very harmful to these habitats.
