Great video! quick FYI for anyone seeing this in December 2022, PlayStation moved the 3D audio options from the main sound output menu to their own menu so you wont see them under the output to headphones area anymore like in 6:41 in the video. everything else still applies of course.

@@GearsAndTech i watched your troubleshooting guide before this video. I did what you did on your TV, but mine’s only has two options (bitstream and PCM) I set it to PCM and my PS5 also I set it to PCM, do you recommend me staying with those settings? I also have the arctis pro w gamedac.

On the ps5 set it to Dolby On the tv bitstream may be the correct setting, but try both for a bit. One should sound better than the other On the ps5 for sure have it set to Dolby though

Yes. I think a lot of people don't realize how much the tv screws with the sound when it can. Trying to make it dumbed down for everyone generally makes it work but not the best You need to be a power user to set it up the way you need Glad it worked. And thanks for the sub.

Is that setting being adjusted on your tv or the ps5? The tv is adding a delay as it tries to process the sound. If it's not the tv then try changing the tv setting, not ps5 one

@GearsandTech Yes thank you, I just had one question, did you revert the HDMI Device type back to TV after your unlocked the channels to 5.1? I've been experimenting a lot and personally found that when set to TV, Linear PCM and enabling 3d audio for TV speakers the spatial awareness in some games significantly improved.

Sound bar for when i watched TV and headset cable for when i played. i had to factory reset my tv to get it to function again properly. Its like i had the TV confused because i was getting only TV audio also when i had by headset cable plugged in before i reset it.

The "output audio to astro" setting makes perfectly sense because it's ONLY the chat audio. You don't want your chat audio to be surround sound. Basically the PS5 sends the surround sound via optical, and chat as normal stereo to the mixamp through usb.

I’ve done this with my Xbox series x optical cable from tv to mixamp and I’ve also set it to pc mode instead of Xbox, with headset format set to Dolby atmos for headphones and the hdmi audio is set to Dolby digital and it sounds great 👍

I have a CX OLED and have Astro a50s. The adapter Astro suggested to use in order to use them slapped my tv down to 1080p at 120hz. I’ll just use the optical cable on the back of my tv. I didn’t pay over 2 grand not to use the HDMI 2.1 4K at 120hz lol

I bought the lg c1 top of the line nr1 gaming tv 120hz 4k all made for gaking has it's own build in gaming channel & options by using a nvidea chip... just use optic it works just like straight into the ps5 no diffrent i tested it out on multiple games

Basically its sending the audio signal from the ps5 to the tv by hdmi and then the tv sends the audio signal from the ps5 to the mixamp from the optical port. MAN, i can’t thank you enough! i was without my astros since launch (ps5 ) since i didn’t like using them without having dolby, i just got a new tv so i looked up set up videos again and i’m surprised i didn’t didn’t this video 8 months ago. This works great but for some reason whenever i finish a match online on COD, when i go back to the lobby after a match, my tv goes back to HDMI(ARC) and leaves Optical Out. i have to toggle Optical Out back on every time i finish a game it’s so weird (i have a LG C1)

Sound like I have an obstacle. My Samsung Q80T has only one HDMI 2.1 port, that works with my PS5. Searching the options on TV, about digital sound output, it shows that transmission option will only work if the signal comes by an HDMI-ARC port. The problem is that this port is HDMI 2.0. What do you think?

I have the latest Astro A40 with the mix amp . It’s fine with the tv but I prefer to play fps like WARZONE on a monitor. So I have to use that adapter that they sell . But that restricts me from getting 4K at 120fps on my monitor which supports that. You’d think the ps5 would have a optical port on it but no . So is there any decent headsets that I can get the best out of my monitor.

Unfortunately I don't have an xsx so I can't help with the settings. But yes, you should be able to do the same Problem 2: yes, you can watch on tv volume still or headphones. When on headphones you need to turn tv volume down.

@@GearsAndTech hey i just managed to buy an PS base station to test your settings on my PS5 but it doesn’t work. First of all I have a Astro A50 and a Samsung TV. The A50 has 2 optical plugs (in/out). The TV doesn’t recognize the optical input and I cannot change from PCM. However I have sound over my headset. If I turn off the power of my tv I don’t get sound anymore which is a sign that the sound doesn’t come via USB.

Im using a monitor and only has an audio jack out, so using an audio cable to run from my Monitor to Astro A50 docking station and then follow your steps. That can be another way to bypass the HDMI adapter

Hey I got the asto a40 tr and mixamp with a hisense u8h. I followed all the settings but when I select dolby as the Bitstream it introduces lag. It doesn't lag when I use pcm

when doing this should i press the dolby button on headset to on or leave it off. does that duplicate the sounds or am i supposed to have that dolby button enabled when setting it up like you did in video? Thank you!

Supposedly the series x can run a dashboard app that allows the Dolby sound to be output over USB. So, the optical cable is not needed at all to gain the same sound performance But, if you didn't want to use that app you should be able to use on of these and get the same result.

Are you referring to the dolby atmos app that costs around $15 to get it to work with a headset? If so, I tried the free trial on the series x and I didn’t really think it was that great after using it, the sound was a bit too all over the place and I didn’t get accurate sound directions on fps games, the optical connection that I have on my xbox one on the other hand is working much better with the headset that I have which uses an optical connection and allows for dolby sound as well.

I don't have an Xbox, so can't say for sure But I'm totally with you. I prefer the optical line out over USB. It just seems more pure In that case, yes it should work. As long as you're able to adjust the settings to split chat audio and Dolby audio into w seperate channels

Yea, only thing I need to do is get a 4K tv with an optical port since I’m currently using a monitor and most monitors don’t have an optical connection. Only problem is finding a tv that is a 4K 24” or below that comes built in with an optical port.

Hello and you just earned a new sub. I have a question.i bought the new A40s and set it up just like you showed in the video without the splitter and optical to the tv.it sounds awesome just like it used to on my ps4 back in the day. My question is I have a samsung s95b which is a pretty top tier tv.after set up I go to menus to pick optical out but that's it.the passthrough option is grayed out. Only lrts me pick auto.saying that I need an hdmi source to e-arc.is it fine the way it is? Dolby surround sounds just like it should and everything sounds like it should.

If it sounds right then leave it like that. If you used it before you know what it should sound like. Just make sure that your voice chat mixer is working. If that's working then everything is setup correctly.

Hey dude, thank you very much for the explanation, i got astro a50 yesterday and my sony tv have an optical input from the back, i used it with the base and my screen information says it still 4k hdr and the sound in 5.1 in gray do i need to change all if the sitting like you? The digital output in the tv setting says auto and i cant change still am not sure if am getting the full sound functions or not

You may have to dissable the tv speaker output to unlock the optical options

@@GearsAndTech couldnt figure how to that in my sony tv, thank you very much anyway, i used the astro hdmi adapter with my astro a50 and did all the settings and choosed dolby from the pa5 settings, The question is do i still need to use the dolby botton on the headset itself to activate it or it doesn’t matter coz there is 2 mods in the a50. Yes, you need to toggle Dolby on or off on the astro as well.

So I have the astroa50....the ones with the blue sliders and bigger base station. So basically I get rid of the base station and buy an astro a40mix amp and just follow these steps. And this is a one time thing and I dont have to mess with anything after that moving forward whether I'm using a headset or when my son plays and he doesn't use a headset when he plays. Also I have a Samsung TV and for my digital output there are only 2 options pcm or Dolby digital....don't see anything about Raw or pass through

Your base station has the mixamp built in. So just hook that up the way the video says. Then it'll be good I would try pcm on the tv.

Hi I want to use astro a40 tr on both ps5 and pc without removing cables. I can run optical for ps5, could I use usb splitter to run to ps5 and pc from mix amp? Then I could just switch between pc and playstation via switch on the rear of mixamp? Thanks

Would "line out" be the same as raw/pass through, because that's all i can find on my TV. Also, shouldn't you have the number of channels set to 2.0 so the mix amp is doing the 5.1 conversion?

It's tough to say if line out is the same. That usually is for the rca Jack's. But if it works like that for you then go for it No, you don't want to set it to 2.0. The mixamp needs all 5 channels going to it so if can convert it into a simulated surround sound from 2 speakers. Setting it to 2.0 will make it so only 2 channels are pushed through the optical cable

Cool video, one issue, when you go to Chat Audio instead of All Audio there is a delay. It’s noticeable.

If you have a delay then you need to turn of all sound enhancers on your tv. It causes the delay. Just turn all audio features off

I have a monitor samsung g7 28 4k and steelseries it seems there is not audio extractor for 4k 120hz. There is a solution for fix this issue. I can't use full potential of the headset because I'm connected the dac through the USB. Please help me I'm getting crazy. I used the head on the ps4 pro and the sound was fantastic now is ok but nothing compared of my previous experience.

Once I changed my Samsung tv to chat audio now I get sound from the tv speakers and my headset or does this not apply for Samsung TVs maybe ?🤷🏽‍♂️

No, that's right. You need to turn the volume off on the tv. Then it will play just through your headset

Try all 3 and see which sounds best. I would guess you want bitstream on the tv, Dolby on the ps5

I got the sony x85j i plugged my astro optical into the tv and usb into my ps5 i did everything like you in the video on my ps5 menu but now on my tv do i really need to change something. On my tv sound is on tv speaker and i cant change pcm but if im changing it to audio device i can change pcm but i got 3 choice pcm autom1 autom2 do you know what is this and im mad loosing my tv speaker sound so can i just leave it by default is it gonna take some features away from the astro?

It depends on the tv. Some tv's will allow optical pass through while still playing sound on tv speakers. In mine I have the speakers turned down because the sound will play through them still if I don't.

Which one are you talking about? The mixamp? If it's series 1 or 2 it'll be regular mini usb If it's series 3 or newer it's micro USB

I have my sound bar using the optical port on my tv for when I watch movies/shows. Is there a way to connect both my amp and sound bar so I can eliminate the extractor?

You can use something like this But, keep in mind the settings for the sound bar and the mixamp will be different. It's possible the sound bar won't sound right with the signal set to pass through. If that happens you would need to switch the sound type each time. It's hard to say for sure till you try it. If you have astro a50's then yes, it should be able to be plugged into the opt out port on the base station The mixamp does not have an opt out, so a splitter like that would need to be used. To setup the A50 just follow the guide. Once it's done and working correct then plug the opt for the sound bar into the base station and try it out. Don't change any settings on the tv or PS5. Fingers crossed it works fine

Sounds like you are getting the USB only option. If you unplug the optical cable I bet everything still works how it is now Most likely you didn't switch the sound to chat audio only in the ps4 settings
