No Start Testing Basics - Spark, Injector Pulse and Fuel Pressure (Hyundai Santa Fe)

ScannerDanner I want to thank you again for your videos, because I have learned a lot from you about testing circuits. About a month and a half ago I started having intermittent no crank no start issues. At that time I replaced an ignition switch after watching one of your videos, unfortunately that wasn't the issue. But your video started me on the journey that kept pushing me to try and solve the mystery. Your videos are the most detailed even to me who never held a volt meter or a test light in my life. After changing the ignition switch and realizing that it was not the problem I started focusing on your videos. I learned more and more every day. My intermittent no crank no start persisted. Once a week, twice a week, my car left me stranded. Today I finally solved it. It was a single partially broken wire from battery to pcm. One day I realized whenever I had no crank I also had no check engine light. And that started me on the path of working up the courage to actually dig in deeper under the hood. Unfortunately mechanics throw parts at vehicles without even turning on any of the basic tools that you teach us how to use. And they are really not that hard to use. Especially for someone who is supposedly schooled to use them for trouble shooting. When I realized that my check engine light was gone and there was a very good possibility that it was pcm related I didn't even want to go near a mechanic. For a simple reason, because just like how they changed my starter at the beginning when this problem started without even testing the circuits, or fuses, I was afraid they would do the same thing with the pcm. So I kept watching your videos. And I found a single red/white wire that had a tiny little hole on the plastic and as I jiggled it it had white powder like substance (corroded away wire) falling out of it. I split the wire touched it together, check engine light appeared. I also had a random stall problem too. So turns out this very same wire was causing that too. I started the car up and while running I pulled the wire apart. And it stalled instantly. I recreated both issues to make sure that wire was both capable of causing the no crank no check engine light,and the stalling as well. My point is that I really appreciate your videos because you most likely saved me from wasting money on parts I never even needed in the first place. Money that I don't have much to waste to begin with. Having an unreliable vehicle is very stressful. And you help those of us who don't have the means to just replace everything until we find the actual problem. I'm really very grateful and I wanted to share my unfortunate and prolonged story, and thank the person who's online guidance helped me to finally fix it. Reminds me of my auto mechanic teacher back in the 80's(race car driver Arnie Knepper), he would not show us or let us take shortcuts until we first learned how to thoroughly diagnose and repair the problem. Love your process… if you beat 36:38 on the tank, you might actually cause a bad ground to get good enough to make the pump run and it wouldn’t be a bad pump. It may just be a bad ground and it will show up again later if maybe the tank itself was not grounded or wherever it grounds to .

At 30:00 to 40:00 , and again from 49:00 to the end, this is far and away the clearest, most concise explanation of the use of the AES Wave uActivate I have seen ANYWHERE on YT or the elsewhere on the internet. Both with and without the use of a scope and amp clamp. AES should stitch these two segments together just to show the tools versatility, and with proper knowledge to back its use up, also add speed to the diagnostic process. I love mine, and am shocked by many who bought it (incl the older version) and whom have never used it, or are maddingly, blindly unaware of its capabilities. Of course, one must have a full and clear understanding of automotive electrical theory to put it to its best use, and also not misuse it, or you could seriously damage components (similar to weaponizing a Power Probe if you don't know what you are doing) by sticking other tools into the banana jacks (doubling as test ports), like for example a Power Probe or test light into the wrong ports. Sure, if you've been around for awhile you probably can already do the same with a multimeter, test light and a fused jumper, like a lot have been doing. But for someone who hasn't, and is trying to speed up the diagnostic process, this works very well. Well done, sir.

I did not read the 406 comments for this video, so maybe someone already mentioned this. You say resistance goes down with temperature. It goes up. You saw this with the current. It initially was 2.5 amps(cold bulb-low resistance-high current flow) but decreased to about 1 (hot bulb-high resistance-low current flow). Probably misspoke. Great videos but a little verbose. Could be cut down and still get all your excellent knowledge across. Great teacher. Very informative videos

Amazing video and Great timing, a V10 Excursion came into the chain store I work at as a tech yesterday 1-20-18, Possible faulty fuel pump on ticket, Long story short , if the tech that ( started ) to diagnose the problem didn't send it away because of aftermarket wires under the dash- I would have done very similar in my testing, After seeing this video it makes me question his skills for one thing, and why he didn't check for current at the pump wiring and or check the pump for ground, he did raise the vehicle and listen for pump noise when someone turned the key, but did not go any further than checking fuse/relays and ear testing, If the vehicle is still in the shop I will myself test this with a test light and leads and see if current is making it to the pump and checking pump for ground, Thank you for you knowledge and willingness to teach and show others fancy tools are not always needed in some cases, This excursion can be tested the same way and I would love to do it for A theory and B Wanting to be more confident in my diagnosing and repairs, Again thank you for this video and Keep up the great work !

So essentially, if my learnings today are correct, I could essentially hook my test light to battery positive and then probe pin 87. If light is present it confirms I have ground, decent brushes, and intact wiring or of course if no light, I have an issue with at least 1 of the 3. This all seems too good to be true lol, this can be done within minutes as well as the convenience of staying under the hood. Thank you for all the knowledge you share with us, you make me feel like I could actually do this for a living if I ever wanted to give up machining.

yes sir, but keep in mind that it only tell you there is continuity, it does NOT mean the circuit and pump is good. You may have to circle back on that leg of the circuit if everything else tests good, but yes, it is a great first step on any load side of a relay circuit

Oh man I had a riot @43:00 when you were explaining the test light jumpered across the fuel pump connector. All I could think about was, "Look at them grubby fingers getting all over that interior trim!!" :D My boss woulda tore a strip off me haha! Great video as always though. True sign of experience was in the beginning when you heard the funny crank and saw the funny bank 2 cam position pid yet didn't get distracted by it. @4:30 you can see the bank2 cam pos is doing a mirror of the RPM pid. Would be super easy to get sucked down that path instead of just making a mental note and carrying on with initial diagnosis to see where you end up!

excellent diagnostics format as usual. I've been seeing what appears as fuel pump failures in modern modular pump circuits with the actual failure at the plug from the pump to the harness plug internally. good pump, bad connection internally. something to consider

Hey Paul !!...I've been watching your videos these last few months and have learned SO much...Thanks and God Bless !!!..your diagnostic troubleshooting is simply amazing...I'm still kind of "old school" and was hoping you'd do a video on using a vacuum gauge for some of us DIY'ers !!...I always keep my vehicles in tip top shape (a 2001 Corvette with 55,000 miles and my new 2016 4 Runner) so I never get a chance to fix anything !!...I gave my old 2005 Ford Escape to my girlfriends daughter and it had 345,000 plus miles and was still going strong....basically all the BIG parts that failed were the fuel pump, alternator (a bitch to change), crappy CD4E transmission at 280,000 miles...I guess the truck was built on a Wednesday...LOL !!...looking forward to some new videos...I also watch Matt from "Schrodingers Box"...have you seen any of his videos??...a very SMART non-pro technician with skills !!!RobUnion Beach,NJP.S. I am new to this but when checking the pulse on the coil I notice on the left it shows 350v I am to assume this is volts. if in fact it is can this be measured with a volt meter.

Awesome diagnose paul!!! Electrical test before pressure test...in this case fuel electrical circuit.

One absolute test for the pump is to apply 12v to it. This removes any doubts about poor or intermittent connections. I've seen lots of cars with new pumps and relays with an intermittent wiring fault.

There were no doubts. Learn to trust your meter and you won't need to jump components directly. I never do.

I can tell you about the time I learned to always check for current draw. I made sure I had voltage to pump, put a 2 amp light across pump feed and ground and had light. Couldn't hear any pump running. Called a pump. Ordered Pump, when to put it in and pulled old pump. Not a drop of gas in the thing. Fuel gauge was wrong. Turned out to be a bad instrument cluster that I had to send out to united radio, pump was fine. Luckily I could return new pump since it was unopened.

Great demonstration on the proper use of a scope... Also great to know someone else knows how to properly figure out an electrical problem... You definitely know how theory works and why... Practicality should also be taught with all this theory... It's the main reason why that guy off the street beats the guy who went to school... The guy off the street doesn't cloud his ability to do his job with trying to over complicate a situation... He uses K.I.S.S.... Keep It Simple Stupid!
