Wow, this is your masterpiece (so far)! This truly is an excellent educational video. I’m shocked that it hasn’t gotten more views and comments, b/c it’s THAT good. If people want to know how to restore old wooden planes, this should be THE go-to video.

Good video. Just subscribed. Understood the process even though you didn't talk. However, I could have used a little more explanation/instruction on filing the throat. I have an old coffin smoother that produces wrinkled shavings that jam in the throat. I'm new to wooden planes but I am learning a lot thanks to you.

The best method is to coat the back of the blade with soot from a candle or graphite from a very soft pencil (ie 5B or 6B). Insert the blade into the plane, set the wedge tightly, and make a few passes on a piece of wood. Gently remove the wedge and iron, and you should see where the iron is and isn't making contact in the throat. Use a file to take off the high points until the you get a mostly flat surface in the throat. It doesn't need to be perfectly flat. The iron just needs to be making contact with most of the throat. Just make sure you're only filing off a tiny bit of material. You really don't want to file away too much wood and wreck the throat geometry.

Question about the iron blade, do you need the back of the blades completly flat or just near the edges for wooden plans and cast iron planes?

Only the part nearest the cutting edge. I usually flatten about an inch or so

Most of the old planes I buy are already too wide in the mouth, how about tackling an insert, it looks like an highly skilled job, is it do-able ? Thanks for the vids x Derek Rowe, East Sussex uk

It’s very doable, not a high-skill job! It’s my most requested video and I definitely have one in the works. I’ll reply to your comment with a link when I post it
