The book Noam references is: "Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black..." -by Douglas A. Blackmon It should be required reading. (Edit) A book that has perhaps given me the most insight (as a White man) into Black America in the middle of the last century is: "The Autobiography of Malcolm X, as told by Alex Haley " It too should be required reading. "They Were Her Property", by Stephanie Jones-Rogers is a scholarly look at White women's role in slavery (White women owned about 40 percent of slaves in the US south.) "Incedents in the Life of a Slave Girl" is another must read autobiography by Harriet Jacobs One of my favorite essays of Dr. Martin Luther King, jr is "Letters from a Birmingham Jail"

Whu does the question of 'white guilt' come up every time we talk about racial inequality? It because white people know they live in an unequal society, and that they naturally benefit from that fact. Thats why when you point out segregation in schools or job inequality, you see white people take it too personally, talking about guilt to avoid feeling it. That guilt isn't for having white skin. It because even you know you live in a society where having white skin benefits you.

michael clarke Really? Root of the problem? The slavery began by men with boats going to Africa to trade goods to Africans for Africans which became slaves all over the world. Those same Greedy Chiefs are the elites today in Africa that still have little regard for the common African. Now America and our govt has the same intolerance of anyone beyond themselves or the 13 families similar to African Elitists and the ignorant masses requesting Govt to resolve social issues is ridiculous, ignorant and lazy, changing social issues or morality thru threat of violence will never work due to its begotten immorality. I believe Socrates had a form for moral change stating just that. That brings us to modern Leaders of community and activists that have no desire to rid us if rascism either... good capitalists dont wish to be out of work therefore they stir the pot rather then educating and being honest they manipulate feelings and instintcual behaviour which when speaking of humans especially those under mind altertering stimulation via TV Radio Movies Print will easily beget ignorant and violent and the cycle continues.

Thank you Mr Chomsky for your intellectual honesty.Definetly one of the most respected thinkers of the 21st century.Albeit,many with far less intellectual capacity and some with greater,would rather deny racisim exists even with history as an evident primary source of fact and current socioeconomic data supporting the legacy still continues.This double consciousness of reality and social dissonance are indications of a collective social schizophrenia as evident in the drug and alcohol culture and pharmaceutical industry used for alleviating and escaping this harsh reality.
@ZacharyJNixon8 жыл бұрын
You're saying b/c some people don't believe in racism that drug and alcoholism is a direct cultural byproduct? You've got me in a box here.
@LiquidFlux668 жыл бұрын
Zachary J. Nixon I propose drugs and alcohol abuse are coping mechanisms in a social system predicated on white supremacy supported and upheld by a morbid form of capitalism that traumatises people psychologically.As a victim of White Supremacy I believe racisim exists,however I make no claim against those who don't.I would highly suggest objective history and primary evidence as fact to the matter that racisim exists.It didn't disappear from the psych of man,because of legislation.At the side of Mount Rushmore in the Dakota's ,Two of the four men iconic to America's foundation were slave holders,part of a legacy,human trafficking,kidnapping,crimes against humanity;but in the thoughts of many these were founding fathers,great men,principled.It all depends on what side of history your on.
@ZacharyJNixon8 жыл бұрын
dsongreg magnetic sperm I'm still confused, which of the four presidents atop Mount Rushmore are you implying were slave owners; b/c, as far as I know, NONE of the four were? Additionally, you've implied that because of something that happened among a minority of people minimal of 65+ years ago, that it would still be a standard in today's society or that it is still culturally or socially acceptable to do in today's society (b/c it 100% isn't). You're right, racism will ALWAYS exist, however, institutional racism, the racism we saw back in 1860's and many years before and couple of years shortly thereafter, are long since gone and to forever remain that way.
@LiquidFlux668 жыл бұрын
Zachary J. Nixon Thomas Jefferson and George Washington both owned slaves,symbolic of how entrenched racisim or White Supremacy is in the Americas.Since you agree that racisim will ALWAYS exist there shouldn't be confusion.Racisim in the 17th century and racisim in the 21st century is by precept a system of mistreatment,domination and subjugation of those people considered non white by those who are considered white and practice racisim,White supremacy in all areas of social activity.

BTW. I would prefer that drug possession gets decriminalized, and the problem gets treated as a public health concern. So, I'm not pro drug war by any means. If we could find a way to take the money out of the drug game I'd be all for it. Even if it means legalizing all drugs. I'm not convinced that legalization would end the black market however.
@QualeQualeson Жыл бұрын
Real legalization would end the black market. Completely and quickly. Not only would the profit margins fall out of the incentive, legal production, import and sales of drugs would cost a fraction of illegal prices. But probably even more important is that they would be of far superior quality. The vast majority of health risks tied to illegal drug use comes from the fact that the substances are not clean. Most of the iconic drugs like weed, LSD, amphetamine, cocaine and heroin, just to name a few, are less harmful to the human biology than many of the things we see as part of our normal daily life.

If you study the history of slavery, it has been going on since the beginning of time. Our founding fathers didn't cook up the idea of slavery and racism. It's the culture they grew up in. The slave trade in Africa was going on before, during and after slavery in America. And it was blacks who enslaved blacks and sold them them to people of countries around the world and kept some for themselves. And throughout history slavery was not racist. White people enslaved white people, black people enslaved black people. So if they want to talk about reparations, they would literally need to reparate 50% of the population of the world. So instead of teaching history as it really is they're slanting it to make victims out of one group and oppressors out of another. It is not productive it does not move the country forward.
@eebbeerrttpp2 жыл бұрын
Idiot, the “founding fathers” claimed to be inspired by Christian principles and morality. When did Christ say that slavery was acceptable? Didn’t he say we’re all children of God?
