Did anyone know Julie was a horse girl? Well the cats outta the bag this week as we experience something pretty remarkable, life with the Onaqui wild horses. About 60 miles southwest of Salt Lake City lives one of the last remaining herds of wild mustangs in Utah.
We drove the van down the 15 ish mile gravel stretch from Vernon to Simpson Springs, known as the Pony Express Rd. It offers a unique viewing window into the lives of some 100-120 stallions, mares, and occasionally foals. We camped out on BLM land and spent the better part of three days just admiring and filming the herd.
You can visit the herd yourself if you’d like, but always keep in mind a few things:
Never chase, attempt to feed, or pet a wild horse. These are wild animals, and they can kick with a speed of 200 mph
Never get between a stallion and his mares, aka his ladies, or a mare and her foal aka baby.
Dont change the landscape. Pack out what you pack in and dont drive off established roads
Most importantly, be respectful; you’re a visiting guest. To get a closer look (no closer than 100 ft minimum distance at all times) approach on foot. DO NOT APPROACH IN SIDE BY SIDES OR 4 WHEEL VEHICLES. You can frighten the horses and alter their habits.
For this trip, we rented some extra camera gear to make sure we could get sharp footage without being too close to the horses. If you’re interested, here’s all the gear we own/rented to make this unique opportunity a success!

I've only been around horses a few times in my life but each time was a super cool experience. They are indeed, special animals. It was neat to see these guys doing what horses naturally do. I appreciate the message. You guys are really good at sliding important information into your videos without smashing people over the head with the message. Also, I really liked the music piece you selected while filming the herd. It was spot on! And it's always fun to see Rocky and Reli. They're such good sports, and so cute!

Another great video!!! - Excellent photography BTW! Julie's face radiates the passion she has for these amazing creatures! Similar to Ben, I'm not one of those "Horse Guys". However, I'm pleased you've seen the herds & are bringing the issues/plights of the wild horses to light. There is a man named George Knapp, who is a host on late night Coast to Coast radio who's provided some excellent coverage for the questionable tactics of the BLM in regards to managing these wild horses. I hope some of your followers of your channel will learn more about this entire subject. PS - I still miss Archer... Best regards, M-

Wow guys your creativity in truly endless. And the footage you were able to show of the horses was just stunning. The musical choice was perfect. And your comments about about humans was so on point. It seems like humans need to have absolute control or dominance over everything. You did a beautiful job of educating us and showing respect to the horses as well as the challenges regular people face. But we can all do something. If we can find a good non profit to donate to to help the horses, or just call or write to the politicians/officials involved with the horses. Same letter sent to everyone. Because hey the feeling of doing something, even if you feel powerless is better than doing nothing. And spread the message. There should always be a safe place for these beautiful animals we share the planet with. Btw, Reli’s ears. They are something special ❤️ And Ben hasn’t lost his directing skills. Julie was very convincing.😊

@@allegrosotto2126 the LDS church out here used to preach that a green lawn is an expectation of good church goers from what I’ve been told. I did not know green lawns were connected to a faith! That's a new one for me! It's a bit crazy that we waste so many resources to grow a plant that we then cut so very short every week. Restoring native plants for pollinators should be more important than impressing neighbors:) - Julie

I didn't know much about them so I am grateful for your info!!! 😃 ps FUN FACT:::Keep in mind, humans are reproducing less and less for the last 50 years. sperm count is down by 50%. so less babies are being popped out 😆 here is another sad tidbit I learned while living and working off grid at an eco village near Grand Canyon: the water tables are being depleted by mega farms, many from over seas. why would our government allow that? anyhoo. looking at property in Upper Peninsula MI. no shortage there. hahaha

I’d say the invention of the pill and many other new birth control methods are why people don’t have at least 5 kids like they used to. My mom is 69 and every house on their street growing up had at least 4 kids and her lifelong friend had 8 kids in the family. This isn’t counting miscarriages people had. Incredibly each family had one income and it was enough where most families could also enjoy music lessons or sports. Most men worked at one of 4 paper mills in the town. You could just go to school to be a teacher right out of high school. Now they want 5 years of university!? The paper mills are all closed now. Considering two incomes can still struggle with 2 kids nowadays. So much has changed in the last 50 years it’s astounding really. Plus there are people who don’t want children. It’s becoming more socially acceptable (but still a fair amount of shame and I won’t even get into political interference) that people are enjoying their lives in different ways and yet can also still contribute to society and help make positive changes. 😀
@dogcatmanvan
@dogcatmanvan Жыл бұрын
Yes that is true! We realize births are down and we appreciate you adding that in. There is still a lot to be said for if we are currently overpopulated, and whether the planet can continue to sustain our population's current food requirements if we carry on the way we are. Especially to your point about how damaging most of our agricultural practices are with regards to water and soil. All good points! Thanks for watching:)

We still have wild horses in Missouri, I would love to see them again. My health has me practically bed ridden at the moment, but I hope that we can see them again some day. I am absolutely obsessed with van life and with my health issues, having a built out van would open up so many opportunities for us to travel. Maybe we should do our own build so I can always have a place to lay down in my own bed wherever we go, we are coming up on our 26th anniversary and I am trying to find a van to rent for a week so we can test it out. Hey thanks for watching:) There is actually a lot of newer published research in the field of molecular biology and genetic analysis that indicates the same horses that existed in North America 1-2 million years ago, migrated to other continents like Asia and Europe prior to the North American extinction event. And decendents of those surviving and migrating horses are the same species that were eventually reintroduced to North America via spanish exploration. The fact that they were at the time, domesticated, has little to do with their biological relation to the horses who once roamed North America over 1 million years ago. You can read about it here if youre interested! Published article by 2 Cornell University Ph.D.'s tinyurl.com/ykxp5cyk

I think calling or writing to any and all politicians in the state can help. Of course the cattle etc lobbying and greasing their hands are powerful. But the most important thing to some people in positions of power is keeping that position. And the people have more power than they think with their votes. I know a lot of people feel powerless right now, but you definitely can make a difference even donating your time to causes you believe in like saving these horses. Whatever you have the time or means to do, at least your doing something and that’s what counts❤

Cassandra is right! You can try to engage with local politicians and groups, support the organizations fighting to protect the horses via your time or money, or even just go to see the horses yourself and post about them on social media. Helping to create awareness can show the BLM that local citizens still care about and value their survival.
