I met Noel in 2000 on a night out. Once he found out I worked with vulnerable teens he told me about his abusive father. This was a really deep conversation in King Tuts WahWah Hut in Glasgow. He told me stuff I'll never divulge. He wasn't playing at Tuts, he was there supporting young/new acts. I had never liked him or Oasis and I told him that but he just laughed and took it in good stead. We had a great night and he gave me his number so he could meet the kids I worked with. Changed my opinion of him forever after that. He's a good bloke

I grew up in Birmingham in the 70s. Irish family too. It was horrific. I relate to everything the lads have said about the violence in their lives. I'm 52 now and I still get depression. My dad got sober before he died. My mother is toxic though and I can't be around her. My little brother is in prison and my other brother is dead. I have my own family now and I love them. Sorry for the sob story. I just wanted to share because a younger me might read this and relate. Get out of there. Make something of yourself. Put it behind you.

@@sandy-quimsrus I prayed for a happy family every night as a child. I left school at 15 and I moved out when I was 16 years old. By that time we were living in Ireland. I went back to the UK and started working construction. I trained for 2 years as a carpenter and when I was 18 I was made a foreman. I started my own business when I was 25. By that stage I was married and divorced. Anyway I did well. I also met a beautiful, wonderful woman and we've been together for 26 years now. I got my happy family in the end. I have 3 great kids, all grown up now and doing well. I have a good relationship with my little sister who lives in the States. But I had to cut the rest of my family out of my life. I honestly couldn't cope with the toxic negativity. There was no love at all. Only hurt. So I'm good now. As good as I can be given I have a mother and older sister and brother who have hurt me at every opportunity. Thanks for your message. I don't know why I posted my comment and I was going to delete it. But I left it up because I know that there are others out there who have lived the same shit I have. I guess my message is that there is hope. We can change things.

Number one misunderstood thing about Noel G… people don’t know how terrible his childhood was and his persona is clearly a self defense mechanism. Despite his enormous ego, one thing you’ll never see him brag about is how he literally saved his entire family.

This is why I love Noel. He doesn't need to justify himself or bow down to anyone let alone his abusive father. There isn't a hint of self pity in him it's his instinct to do better for himself and I respect that. He's been mistaken for being arrogant but he's not. He just believed he deserved better and he went out and there got it, good for him!

I'm so sorry Stephen. It can be frustrating to a parent when they don't know how to fix their child but that is never a reason to take it out on them. I know they have often learned that from their parents. My grandmother told me she was beaten badly at five for picking up a clothing line clip that belonged to a neighbor. She was told she was a thief and bad. I helped raise a child that stuttered and thank God the school found her a great speech therapist and she quickly overcame the issue. My “father” did the same to me, he would pass me in the street (I was 11) in his beautiful car that I couldn’t go in because “I was “dirty” whatever THAT meant! I’d hitchhike and he and my brother would wave and laugh as they drive by! He would never give me a lift, he said “put your short shorts on, you’ll get a ride”! What kind of father is that!? The abuse was only to me, not my siblings. I never understood why God would allow my life to be so horrible abs why I was worthless. Now that I’m older, I see that it turned for the good of others, I have a heart for the abused, have most of my life. My favorite line has always been "I met my maker, I made him cry", because I thought it referred to him spitting in the face of destiny. He was always the underdog; abused by his father, struggled in school, stammered, not the best looking of the brothers, a failed amateur musician. He must have felt like a nobody in his mid-twenties before Oasis. He then became one of the biggest British working class heroes and rock icons. I think your interpretation is probably more likely to be Noel's intention, but I prefer reading it this way. Death of the author, eh?

Fabulous breakdown of the lyrics James… Noel and Liam are not passive personalities like Paul is. Their childhood with Tommy was diabolical and abusive, whilst unconditionally loving and nurturing with Peggy. Those boys rose up and faced the music - literally. Part of Noel’s character is full of fight, hard grafting, as well as being very optimistic, glass half full, creating possibilities, hope, adventure is in your hands. He’s a counterphobic enneagram type 6 with a strong 7 wing with a hell of a lot of great Gemini traits of being daring, bold, innovative, creative, outspoken, lively and active. Liam’s an enneagram type 1, anger always burning away on the back burner ready to boil over at any minute and a Virgo too which is a double dose of perfectionism and wanting things to be right. I love how Peggy still lives in the same house she moved the boys to in 1984 in Burnage and they still go back regularly to visit, although sadly not Noel and Liam together. Oasis though are a true story of working class heroes. I hope for Peggy’s sake they reconcile before the end of her life. Anyway, really great synopsis, I’ll never listen to DYKWIM again in the same way ever again 👏🏻 🎶🎸

Liam a type 1? Isn't he more of a type 7?
@DanielHillCoaching
@DanielHillCoaching 2 жыл бұрын
@@gugao.doidao in my humble opinion I'd say no, I sense that he's a 1. When 1's are out of their ego they become more fun loving and adventurous - hence you see the 7. He is so much more chilled out these days and happier, despite holding the type 1 gripe that he was wronged as "Noel left Oasis" in his mind. Just like the type 1 of Roy Keane holding his gripe with Alex Ferguson (ex Man Utd boss). 1's struggle so hard to forgive. 7's find it easier although it's still a challenge. For me also the greatest indicator of him being a type 1 is what happens when he's in stress, and he goes to the moodiness of the 4 like all 1's do. This is ultimately what broke Oasis in the end, his big dramas along with his temper, and the French gig that-never-was with the smashing of the guitars was something Noel couldn't deal with one second longer. The 6 of Noel will do everything to avoid "chaos". I'm a 6 and I'd say James is too, but both phobic type 6's as opposed to Noel's counter-phobic 6 personality type. Also 1's are in the need to be in control as they are by nature one third of the control types, and although Noel's a counter-phobic 6 - a security type - they tend to resemble type 8's and Liam would complain about Noel being so controlling and almost a little Hitler, which ironically was Hitler's personality - a counter-phobic enneatype 6 - although he had more of a 5 wing as opposed to Noel's optimistic and upbeat 7 wing. Could I be wrong, of course, but my intuition says he's a type 1 all the way and I've thought that for many, many years now... I'm more than happy to hear your thoughts.

Not only was I influenced by Catholicism, but I was dependent on my husband not only financially, but also emotionally and culturally too. At the time it was a male dominated society and women were relegated to the kitchen and taught to be passive towards their husband. I was able to graduate college and get my social work license. For many years I worked with victims of domestic violence snd during that time I have seen many of societal changes. Women now have choices, help is available, and the stigmas of guilt, shame and helplessness are no longer. Bless you all.

This story sounds so familiar to victims of domestic violence, I, like you suffered it for a while, by the time I had my second child I'd had enough, my ex hounded me until he finally got sent to prison for his actions, whilst he was away I met someone bigger and tougher than him. These children grow up and either are like their fathers, or like my children totally different. I hope you had a better life after you got away from the violence, and the Gallagher brothers reconcile and make peace with themselves.

I grew up in a similar situation to Noel. When you endure something like that, you have to learn to create a tough exterior so that no one can ever hurt you. I think that is the key to a lot of Noel's lyrics in many of his songs. He puts on this tough exterior, then writes about these deeply personal parts of his life, but structures the lyrics in a way that no one will know exactly what he is talking about. That is why he never discusses the meanings of his songs, or simply lies about them. He has to maintain that tough exterior so that he never appears vulnerable. "Champagne Supernova" is a perfect example. He is asking Melissa why she couldn't have been there to stop them from getting high before that gig, and he is warning her that he may overdose one day. It is a deeply personal song, and that is why he always lies about it. This song is very similar. He is telling a deeply personal story, but made the lyrics vague enough so that only people who had been through it would know what he was talking about. That is why the title is "D'ya Know What I Mean?". Of course, he will never admit it.

"I met my maker, I made him cry." Noel doesn't believe in God, but he references God often in different songs. I believe this line to be, I met God, and I made him cry after I yelled at him anguish, questioning why he wasn't there when I was a kid suffering at the hands of my father.

The damage caused is absolutely heartbreaking, it never leaves you any kind of abuse, growing up in the 60s and 70s was an extremely mysogonistic society and abuse towards children was the norm particularly in Ireland with the Catholic Church and its enablers. I hate going back there as the memories are horrible. No wonder Noel won't take any prisoners, I now understand why, the flash backs must be horrendous.

As a mother of two boys, I'm glad I left their dad doing that. I'm glad I'm divorcing. And just like he got, if a man would touch me again it's either he kills me or I'll kill him but hes at least walking away with something broken. Idc what. My kids don't need it. I'm glad we are learning more and know better now. I know how he felt. We plotted killing our moms bf. We would lay up at night and fantasize about stabbing him in the throat. Swapping ideas about it between the three of us. Aged like between 7 and 5. Just the three of us exchanging murder plans at night. But we were all really scared of how invincible he seemed. A ways back I heard he was found decapitated. I really hope the coronor can confirm soon that it was him. Not bc we fear him anymore. But bc he just needs put down. I'm so sad for any kid who saw this. Endured it. And to have someone say they love you and be the main reason your being beaten. Bc they won't pick their kids before anything else. Fuck that. I hate that it happened to anyone ever.

I always thought that ‘coming in a mess going out in style’ was NG saying his childhood was a mess but look at him now. I’m sure there’s multiple ways of interpreting these lyrics and maybe more than one thing is true. I knew that their dad was very abusive to the boys as children but I’d never heard those passages from PGs book. How could anybody hurt those little boys? I love seeing those pictures of them as kids, snaggle toothed and grinning from ear to ear. So precious!! And Liam may have been prettier back in the day but in 2022 Noely Noely is a very, very good looking man. Thanks for the video! Enjoyed it!!!

I didn't know about this at all, I had the vague idea that Noel and Liam came from a broken family but it's really serious stuff. It makes me feel sad for Noel in particular, I have to say that I have been been very disappointed by Noel through the years (not that he owes anything to his fans, but I have been a massive Oasis fan in the early days and I looked up to these guys). This makes me have a lot of respect and understanding for Noel. It's just tragic, and unfortunately it's all too common.

Great vid. I'd say the way I interpret the chorus given the context you've given is Noel being surrounded by his family at some point and reflecting with pride and accomplishment at how they're happy and thriving without his father and it being down to him. Can just picture Noel, beer in hand, sat in a garden watching them all and thinking "Yeah, all my people right here, right now. D'you know what I mean?"

Well I thought he was referring to his blood being on the tracks The Fool On The Hill and I Feel Fine and that the next line "don't look back cause you know what you might see" means he doesn't want to remember the past by looking at these things or something like that. Think the issue with Noel writing these deep hidden lyrics is his acknowledgment of how much he steals ..Read somewhere Don't Go Away was written around the time Peggy had a Cancer Scare As James has shown before in previous video the heart & soul of it The chorus stolen from the Real People Love Noel but I don't think he's ever been introspective songwriter. When it comes to his own pain 100% believe he'd put pen to paper writing a song about Sarah his own darkest Childhood memories I don't think so ..

Such a brilliant video good sir. I always found Noel's, Liam's and the entire Oasis story motivational and inspirational to my life and I am sure the life of millions. It is very heroic. A working-class lad downtrodden with the burden of life getting abused by his father with no help at all. Yet, through perseverance and strength, Noel Gallagher came out on top as one of the greatest songwriters of all time. An absolute beautiful story. Very heartfelt. But one thing I would say though, I do think God was on the Gallagher's side. God may have put Noel in this circumstance, this harsh struggle to face in life to become the genius of a musician he is today. God, Fate or Destiny (whatever you may call it) has put Noel and his family through this struggle for a much more beautiful outcome in the end. So in a way, God did answer Noel and Peggy's prayers in the end granting two of the biggest rockstars England has ever produced, Noel and Liam. That is one way to look at it. God was on the side of the Gallaghers. God bless Noel, Peggy, Liam and Paul. They deserve it. This is important to note because all the original Oasis members came from Irish Catholic backgrounds. Noel even stated abuse in marriages and to their child was normal in their Irish council estate. Truly a harsh life. I always found "D'you know what I mean?" an anthemic inspiration for anyone in that downtrodden, working class and abusive lifestyle. To join Oasis and search for meaning in life. To look for hope. Oasis always had a rock n roll swagger to them with larger than life lyrics and music but deep down, there is a melancholic innocent boy inside Noel Gallagher. Otherwise he would not write songs such as "Dead on the water" or "Dying of the Light." As well as "Live Forever." All a plead to seek hope and beauty in life. Noel Gallagher and Oasis has helped inspired and motivate my life and I am sure he has done the same for millions. A truly remarkable story. And you sir, have a great insight on lyricism and poetry. Along with a great reading voice. Keep it up! Best of luck to you and your channel! Cheers!

Me too. Although despite what had gone on, I once saved my father's life. He eventually repaid me by being his usual controlling self, and by removing me from his will, because I refused to pretend and play happy families. I put limits on what I would tolerate. He hated my independence. I only intervened to save him because I didn't want a preventable death on my conscience, if that makes sense. I would do it again to save a life. He had more chances to redeem himself and he still behaved like an a**hole but that was his choice and I exercised mine. I didn't call him 'Dad', I called him by his first name. That would really irk him but he was no father to me. He called me to let me know I was 'on my own' about the will, which obviously I had always been. I said 'don't worry, with any luck I'll be dead first!' and went on to enumerate my many auto immune disorders brought on by stress. He was really pissed off because he wanted to hurt me, but I'd seen that coming from a mile off. LOL! I would say however that in his day there wasn't the services available for alcoholism and mental illness. So the disinhibition of alcohol combined with the misogynistic society and the power of being able to do what he liked behind closed doors was a volatile combination. He hated me pathologically, and my siblings are all at each other's throats. They hate me the most because I broke out of it and had minimal contact for my whole life when I was old enough to do so. They say 'you abandoned us' which wasn't quite right, I tried to help them but they chose addiction and selfishness and expected me to serve them, while they hated and ridiculed me. They still do but it's their problem.

I have read this book myself , as I was am still a fan of oasis. Their music in the 90’s was just so good. I have met Noel twice , and both times he was so lovely to stop and have a proper conversation and did not try to rush off. A lot of people don’t like the brothers but on a one to one NOEL was just so lovely. Their upbringing was shocking and poor peggy , she looked after her boys the best she could. With very little money from Tommy. Noel lived near me once in Chalfont st Giles , when he was still with Meg. I always thought it strange where they lived is called BURNAGE which is my surname . But at least now all the boys are grown , with their own families, and have turned out good fathers . Thanks for this video very nicely done . From ONE OASIS FAN 👍❤️😁🙋‍♀️

This is an anthem for everyone who has been abused and treated like dirt. I love that side of Noel's songwriting. How he turned an upbringing of pain and neglect from his father to turning negatives into a positive in the songs he has written. Unlike Kurt Cobain whose songs with Nirvana have a more depressed point of view to them, Oasis songs lean optimistic and accepting despite being working class. D'You now What I Mean uses the same chords as Wonderwall and is a completely different angle of a song, too. The genius that is Noel Gallagher. The definition of a songwriter.

I remember Noel in a interview saying "Liam has had an easy life". Me personally I think Noel envied Liam. He wasn't abused by his father, he became the singer and front man of Oasis. Noel was rejected from being the singer in the inspiral carpets so I always thought Noel wanted to be the frontman and centre of attention which is why he now prefers his solo career than Oasis.

Heimlich the caterpillar. I think your right and who could blame him? Liam was an absolutely beautiful lad - he had a gaggle of girls calling for him to walk to school every day. Not only that - he was the cock of his school - jeez I'm a woman and I'D be jealous of him!! We share a birthday me and Liam and I grew up ( and I'm still here) in South Manchester not far from Burnage. Unfortunately that's where the similarities end! I saw Oasis 8 times and was obsessed with them for a few years - all on the back of their first 3 albums. The 2 nights at Maine Road and Loch Lomand were gigs I'll never forget ✌

@@ChorltonandtheWheelies I'm glad I ain't alone in thinking that part of Noel's resentment of Liam was because he got the lions share of his father's abuse while his kid brother was spared. Yet it was Noel who had to stop Liam from beating their dad up in 96. The whole situation made mummy's boys out of all 3 brothers.

@@ralphczukay1390 I think Noel prefers being in High Flying Birds more than Oasis at this point. Even though Oasis was more successful High Flying Birds was more about himself. Noel was rejected from being the frontman of Inspiral Carpets. He auditioned as the singer but was told he wasn't good enough so he toured with them as a roadie. Even in Oasis he increasingly wanted more songs for him to sing and did solo shows even when he was in Oasis. I think he always wanted to be the cool rockstar frontman that Liam was and probably resented him for it.

@@ralphczukay1390 I think at this point they hate each other but in terms of their childhood I think Noel looks at Liam as someone who had it easier. I also think he hates the fact he had to share rooms with Liam as a child whilst their older brother Paul got their own room.

Noel was jealous of Liam and Liam idolised Noel. Liam even said in one interview he was a big fan of Noels songs and that he doesn’t need anyone else apart from the Beatles and Noel. So despite Liam having such a successful solo career, deep down he wants to Oasis to be back and he wants to be singing songs which Noel writes more than anything

I’m not sure it ties in… but the verse; “I don't really care for what you believe So open up your fist or you won't receive The thoughts and the words of every man you'll need Get up off the floor and believe in life No one's ever gonna ever ask you twice Get on the bus and bring it on home to me” Could he be talking to Tommy directly here? Noel doesn’t care what story his Dad spins to the public or even to himself. Is Noel telling him to open his fist, stop being aggressive now and maybe his boys (“every man you’ll ever need”) might actually talk to him and have an open conversation about what went on? Is he telling Tommy to ‘get up off the floor’ change his ways, because he won’t be asked again? After all that has passed, would Noel even care for so much as some recognition and admission from his Dad for what he put them through? Possibly. Bring It On Home To Me by Sam Cooke’s lyrics are quite striking to Noel’s and the boys situation Is the song reference a nod to say “look at what you could have had”? Noel would have provided and loved back, if only Tommy had loved them and never hurt them

For some reason I've always ranked D'you Know What I Mean as the best song Noel ever wrote . I always thought/knew it had a deeper meaning than the seemingly gobbledygook lyrics , but could never suss them out . So thanks for clearing it all up . Very rewarding to hear your concise breakdown of a truly truly brilliant song . Fair play to Noel for not reacting with his fists in the meeting with his "dad" ......... Hardly surprising he's an "arrogant bastard " having put up with that shite . I was abused and bullied by a very close family member as a kid and had no one to turn to , and then a lot later in life, they all of a sudden want to pretend nothing ever happened and they want to be your best mate . NEVER gonna happen dickhead !! Thanks again for a superb piece of journalism 👊

Great work James. Noel is one of the great songwriters of our time for the depth and breadth of his work. Some 'fans' cannot get past whether he is a better singer than Liam, or whether they should make up and re-unite. And another thing, domestic abuse has sadly increased during the pandemic. Much probably goes unreported.

I was brought up the exact same It's devastating being that middle child, all the brunt of a failed marriage, phycological physical and emotional abuse is taken out on you. And exactly what you've said by me not killing him and the 4 of us left his sorry ass. We moved out. My mam older brother and a younger sister, yea we got the hell out of there. Now we're back as a family my mam,my sister, myself but unfortunately my older brother Mark died 4years ago because he couldn't reconcile the upbringing and pain of the past. Add depression into all that and it gets messy!

@@davokelly7876 awww davo mate that was just a lovely reply thankyou so much my friend. Yeah grief is a shitter for sure mate. Aye my sister and me were very close always throughout our lives as my brother used to say we were 2 cheeks of the same arse haha! I miss her terribly davo she got into problems with addiction to painkillers which have been a problem for her on and off for about 10 years, she nearly died 6 years ago she got pneumonia and weighed 5 stone wet through the doctor came into the room and told us she probably wouldn't make it through the night but by some miracle she did and came out fighting fit but the demons returned a couple of years ago around the start of the pandemic and lockdown she got bored easily and couldn't stand being inside I mean some birds aren't meant to be caged and she was one of them she liked to be out and about. Anyway she was spending all her money on over the counter pills called nurses plus which have a high codeine content and if u take enough you can get high on them so it soon got a grip of her and the rest is history and history repeated itself but this time at 4 and a half stone she just wasn't strong enough to pull through a second time. The day after by birthday aswell I tell you davey it was a right kick up the bollocks mate. She left behind 3 sons the youngest being 6 years old. Heartbreaking as their father is an alcoholic and since my sister passed he's just gotten worse and the young lad is going to suffer its awful to watch but I'm powerless cos he's a dickhead and handy with his fists so o dunno mate. Tell me about you mate and your brother and upbringing we had a narcissistic mother who was pure evil to me and my sister especially me tho being the oldest she would shame me bully me beat me and lock me in my room she was a cruel bastard and she destroyed my life to this day I'm still screwed up even tho the evil bitch had been dead 20 odd years she still haunts my dreams mate. I do get help with my mental health issues but it never goes away. Anyway my friend I'm gunna hit the hay I'm nodding off iv been writing this an hour hahaha keep nodding in and out of sleep. I'd love to hear your story mate seriously I absolutely adore the Irish and the accent is the best on the planet plus you are the best people and great fun. @@jasonbarron3047 Jase my man howr you bro? That was deep what you shared about your sister what's her name btw? I can relate too with my old brother Mark couldn't deal with the heartbreak of our father being abusive and constant abandonment. We all had to leg it from my father and start again... I ended up in the same place your sister was by the time I'd aged 16, here in Dublin. The heorin epidemic was on full flow in the 90s and I got swept away in that tide. After a few prison sentences and four or five rehabs I got my shit together aged 26 and life has been manageable since then thank God 😊 im 40 now dude wow! thats a trip. Unfortunately my late bro was only getting started into that mad life of addiction aged 22ish and he battled with depression also. So by the age of 36, I after having a brother like an Irish twin ( born within year of each other) My big brother Mark was dead at 38 🥲 That was four years ago man and I still think every day of him like your brother said "like two checks of the same arse" (that's a gas analogy btw 🤣) so we were too. So it's very new for you my man take each day as I comes. Cry when you need to, laugh about the funny times, remember your sis for the buzzer she was and I believe we'll reunite one day in heaven bro, that above all else gives me solitude and peace 🤗. It sounds like both our kin were suffering and God said "right! "enough! no more pain" and they're gone just like that! "I'm taking you guys home". And we greive and feel angry, sorrow, sometimes joy and we grieve through it....We gotta be strong for our family left which is just my ma, younger sister and me (the middle guy)...that's what my fist OP was all about. Getting the brunt of all the shit by my da and never knew exactly why🤷🏻‍♂️. You keep it real 💯 % mate and anytime you wanna chat just holler...seriously I care about you and so do many others. Peace ✌️ 💚🤍🧡

Never stay with an abusive partner ‘for the kid’s sake’. The fact is that growing up with an abusive parent destroys a child. The trauma is often lifelong and crippling for children. Take the kids and get out as soon as you can for their sake!

Wow! Thank you for this video. I always thought the brothers were just stuck up, conceited, and I didn’t realize they are actually very traumatized! Horrible way to grow up. Way too many families like that, the man who is supposed to protect his family is terrorizing family instead. Like castle being attacked by its own knights.

I just think it's a Noel universal lyric about coming home after work on a Friday night sprucing yourself up and hitting the pubs & clubs. The Friday night of most working class blokes who fill the Oasis fan demographic in the 90s - Can almost imagine looking in the mirror and thinking only a face a mother could love 🤣 I've always seen that song as anthemic call to arms to the working class

Great breakdown, thank you. The only point I have a different thought about is the chorus. I think “his people” is wider, it’s anyone who grew up in an abusive home, and “do you know what I mean?” is him connecting with us, saying “you’re not alone”. This is then followed by the subsequent verses talking directly to people still going through it. This is possibly my favourite Oasis song for the way it speaks to me. This and Columbia, which just rocks.
