Today we look into the Starfleet career of Nog, the first Ferengi in Starfleet from cadet to lieutenant in the show and how the books and games took his character to the rank of Captain of his own vessel.
This includes portions of canon material interwoven with memory beta content.

I always understood that scene such that Sisko was impressed or satisfied by his work, but he couldn't yet judge Nog properly, still seeing him as the arrogant little boy that he used to be. Only when Sisko gets angry and Nog reveals his personal motivation does Sisko realize the character development Nog underwent. So he may have been satisfied with Nog's work, but he didn't trust him yet. Meaning, that it's not ONLY Nogs personal motivation of not wanting to end up like his father that made Sisko sponsor him, but also his good work.

What starfleet got in Nog was a jewel encrusted latinum egg. Someone that is very driven, tenacious, intelligant and willing tiimprovize on the fly. Also what i see as being the best of ferrangi culture in practicing the art of the deal and seeing conflict as a sort of negociation 'you want something. I want something. How can we walk away from this transaction satisfied?' A far cry from the first depictions of ferrangi in Next Gen.

When you learn to use the worst aspect of your species to your advantage in any situation. I think we can safely say he found out that the Rules of Acquisition can be applied to social and philosophical gain as much as material. He's quite literally a rags to commander story, finding a place where his talents could be best applied . . . who knows, perhaps in a future Star Trek, we learn that the Ferengi are undergoing a civil revolution as a result of Nog's accomplishments.
@kinagrill
@kinagrill 2 жыл бұрын
Nog was still ferengi at heart... it was just less about the material wealth for him, and all about the wealth of his status in life, so to speak. Which was nice, cuz it didn't feel 'off' for a Ferengi, but rather like the smarter kind that sought his wealth in the way Starfleet does it - the need for things and moeny? eh, the wealth of knowledge, experiences out in the deep, darkness of space? to serve on some of the most advanced space vessels, etc? yup, that's it for Nog.

Nog was always my favorite character. And the reason Sisko sponsored Nog to the Academy was not just him being good at cargo management. It was the fact Nog was very serious. He wanted to change his life and never end up as his father. Sisko saw this and agreed to sponsoring him. Though I had no idea he beat the Kobayashi Maru twice. And I am still laughing at the fact he caused the program to crash. Kirk would be proud.

It isn't just that Nog didn't want to be like hsi father. He saw that his father could be so much more, but the toxic bits of Ferrangi culture held him back, and Nog wanted t obe more than what that culture would allow... without spitting on or forgetting what good could come of it.

So Nog was promoted to Lt within a year of graduating the academy as an Ensign. Harry Kim spent 7 years on Voyager as an Ensign doing a Lt Cmdr's job (Head of Operations). It wouldn't have made any difference practically but for the sake of his career Janeway could and should have promoted Kim to Lt after a year or two since she always assumed they'd make it back home. She promoted Tuvok from Lt to Lt Cmdr and Paris went from Lt to Ensign and back to Lt again.

The idea that Nog might have had a role in the development of the Chimera seems very likely and logical, as he later became Captain of said starship. Why? Because this would have given him technical knowledge of the vessel, and possible quirks. This was an excellent video!!! Thank you soooo much! Nog was my favorite character from DS 9. I was very saddened to learn of Aron Eisenbergs passing. He was a brilliant actor who faced a challenging role and pulled it off with remarkable success. The Ferengi were my least favorite people when introduced in TNG. All those playing Ferengi in DS 9 shows changed that over time but particularly the character if Nog. Aron will be missed as an actor in the world of sci fi media but left us with a great collection of film to enjoy. Thank you again for documenting this!

Well, you didn't capitalized on the events, but this was so good, it should've been released sooner, really good, cheers mate, and let's celebrate life with that character, A. Eisenberg was a genius, not only on Nog, everything he played.

while its sad the actor for nog has passed away, I have always believed that while actors and actresses are finite. the characters they portrayed are forever so long as they are remembered. so I encourage all to continue weighting storeys that feature charaters whose actors have passed.

The first character I made in STO was Ferengi. It wasn't specifically Nog related, but rather a combination of everything that had happened to their culture. Rom being Nagas, Nog being the first in to Starfleet, etc, allowed for the people to realize that they could have differently focused lives than just the pursuit of Profit.

DS9 had much better character development over any of the other series (including TNG). You CARED about these people. I remember watching this when it originally aired and teared up at this scene. And of course, the actors! Avery Brooks and Aron Eisenberg killed this scene

Nog was *refused* first by Sisko - and not Accepted. Only after Nog broke down and revealed his Intentions to be true Sisko accepted - because, Nogs Words were something he whished for his Son who did not wanted to and also - mainly - of himself and his Fathers Buisness he sought to escape from, joining Star Fleet. Nogs Words were - without knowing - the exact Words Sisko told his Pa as he left in a quarrel for not returning a long Time, both holding somewhat of a Grudge. And Nog is practically a "Veteran" before his Career begins, as his first Battles are the worst and he was everytime all in the Fray and completelea out of his Zone - and yet he fought through. Thus, after his Wound, his PTSD kicked in fully - and by overcoming it, he became one of the greatest and most fierce and fearless Starfleet Offices. He may not have the Lobes, but his Balls are made from hardened Latinum and the Heart he has is bigger than a Targs.

just a point out the DS9 series is the only Canon source of nog's life the last bits you talk about is from Star Trek online which is not considered Canon and the real life actor who played him died and that would have been the events before Star Trek online so more evidence that it's not Canon the character would have passed away before then. I think it's a bad idea the ferengi given up their pursuit of profit to join Starfleet it most likely would end to the destruction of their home world

The second Ferengi start to join starfleet that’s pretty much it for the Ferengi way of life. Capitalism relies on those with business acumen, and those without, the latter exploited by the former to generate wealth and profit. If Ferengi less suited to business and more suited to other fields of study can simply leave, the cycle of exploitation is living on borrowed time.

I have had the good privilege of speaking through direct messages with Aron Eisenberg a few times. He was a remarkably, truly remarkably warm and affable man. We were making plans to stream together to have a nerd fest live stream about all things Trek. He was forced to put off our arrangement as he had a soccer season to see to victory as a coach. They won those games if I'm not mistaken. He will be missed.

One thing that always confused me about the Valiant incident. Shouldn’t Nog have automatically been put into command since he was the only actual officer? The members of Red Squad were only cadets that were given battlefield promotions; promotions that most likely would have been revoked after rejoining the Federation.
@3Rayfire
@3Rayfire 4 жыл бұрын
The writers based it on old battlefield promotion rules back in the wooden ship's age (Star Trek often defaulted to that as the distances in space travel are similar to the level isolation in the age of pioneers), meaning it would've taken an actual Captain to relieve Watters. Besides I doubt they would've listened anyway. A curious fact is that despite being Battlefield commissioned to full officer himself, Nog was originally in the same class with the Red Squad Cadets taking their midshipman's cruise.

I loved NOG. DS9 was the best spin off from TNG. I'm glad the writers put in characters like NOG and his dad. Demonstrated that weren't always about profit with Ferengi, there was family, honor and compassion. NOG befriending Jake helped show that. I thought he was really a kid in real life until I saw he passed away. That's a testament to his acting. He always dominated the scene whenever it was with Jake. This makes me so sad. Rest In Peace.
