It's incredible that if you focus on your English understanding you will hear a weird sounding English and if you focus on your German you will hear a weird sounding German.

He basically said that the building in the beginning boats had to pay toll and that after that the boats had to be pushed forward by sticks because they couldn't pull it anymore because the path besides the canal stopped existing around there.

Very close to what old Anglo Saxon sounded like, also the closest language to modern English.

@@jordihubers6193 You know that the Lower Saxon speachroom is four times bigger than the dutch. It is close to dutch because it is one of the most western dialects of Low Saxon and very influenced by standard dutch.

For some perspective from Dutch speakers, this sounds exactly the same as the dialects in the northeast of the country and is mutually intelligible with standard Dutch.

@@saturner420 How uneducated are you about linguistics to confidently say this. Franconian language group is a hypothetical grouping of languages around the Rhine named after the Frankish tribes. Modern Dutch is more of a mishmash of Istvaeonic and Ingvaeonic (Frankish, Frisian and Saxon), but its classification remains Low Franconian.

Well, this dialect is based on a portion of Frisian substratum, as the population was Frisian before a language change to Lower Saxony (and then Dutch) took place.

A dialect *of* Low Saxon *in* the Netherlands. It's related both to Drents, Twents, Achterhoeks in the Netherlands, and also to Low German dialects in Northern Germany, like Oostfrieslands (which is not Frisian!), Emslands, Oldenburgs. It is a sister language of Dutch, because hundreds of years ago, Gronings comes from Old Saxon (just like Drents, Oostfrieslands, and so on) whereas Dutch comes from Old Dutch. It has a special history!
