Angel B It was a stupid comparison to begin with anyway. The type R is in the same class as a wrx sti, 350-370z, Mitsubishi evos, Volkswagen Golf R. I would never try to race any of those cars in my stock 86 I know I would get beat easy. They should have compared the 86 with a golf gti, civic si, or Miata. Miata is really the only car that is similar to the 86. I want to get mine to about 300 wheel since I daily it everywhere, and not gonna lie it worries me sometimes on the high way merging, you put your foot down and don’t move sometimes. I also like to race a little...I’m in Fl so not many fun twisty roads, my dream is to build a street racing monster later on once the car gets it beating over time. Rebuild the whole thing, get it to about 600-700hp or more, fit some 300s on the rear. I just love the look and platform. I have a bright orange 860 with black racing stripes, everyone always turns their heads/takes pics lol

fatboy19831 The 0-60 for a manual 86 is in the 7 second range unless you do a 4k clutch dump where it drops to 6.0-6.2 seconds. There are minivans as fast or maybe slightly faster than a manual 86 without a launch.

@@user-go2cv8fs6f Name one on the market today. The 86 weighs 2700 pounds and has a limited-slip. You just saw the 86 take the type R out the hole. It is a myth that the 86 is torquless at low rpm. It is not. It is the mid-range torque dip that kills it. With a clutch drop, you NEVER see that dip. Above 5000 rpm with the manual in ANY roll on with a minivan the 86 will pull ahead and keep on pulling to 138 mph. No US minivan can top 125. From a dead stop, you have to drop the clutch if you are racing ANYTHING in an 86. The Minivan being faster than the 86 is a myth. Hyped up by the internet. The Base BRZ manual can hit 60 in under 6 seconds. Last but not least. A minivan cant turn and to equip one as fast as an 86 you have to spend well over 35k.........for a minivan. Like I said if you get beat by a Minivan in any way in a manual 86. You cant drive. It is not the cars fault.

subaru brz owner here. i like the type r its a nice car and really fast out of the box. but the brz feels better for me. properly balance rwd cars just has a different and very enjoyable driving characteristics. hence why the tester mention that toyota should give it more power. the brz chassis can take more power and produce better lap time with more power and wider tire. at the end of the day, it boils down to what you prefer. i remember i read somewhere that the 86/brz is a love letter to the 90's sports car. it not that fast but really fun to drive.

The 86/BRZ can be modified. I love the way it looks and I think it's a great platform as a tuner car. The proportions are magnificent and I believe it's a timeless design that still looks great in 2019.

"Fun" is a personal feeling. Fun to me is high torque, all wheel drive, and fat tires, the complete opposite of the 86. If fun for you is low power, low to the ground, good handling and light weight, then all the power to you. Hey TFL I love yalls channel, especially since you've brought tommy and the 2nd generation of journalists on ( especially that canadian ; ) ) . Some constructive criticism, or opinion: The type R would have been better paired with a modified BRZ or RS. If you make this comparison, it makes no sense. If you were trying to either showcase one car's abilities, or make a point about a car, it didn't come through very well and should have been clearly defined. The BRZ is left stock because the price point allows people to get into the car reasonably, and do turbo/supercharge mods as they go. It's fully customizable. I think they expect people to do their own mods in the aftermarket.

I seriously don’t get why the 86/BRZ/frs get so much hate, as someone who has personally owned one for almost a year, and previous owning cars like supras and 350s, there’s just something different about this car that makes it more enjoyable, but we all have our personal tastes, but still it was also designed to be a cheap affordable sports car, which it is, putting a turbo in it would completely disregard the whole purpose of why it was built, and so what if it doesn’t have a turbo, one it doesn’t really need it and two if you really want it to be turbo...put a turbo in it. Speed isn’t everything, as I say, I’d much rather drive a slow boring car, than a fast boring one

The 86 is a legacy model for the AE86, it's purposedly designed for drifting. I was not surprised when the turbocharged monster type R zoomed past it.

The reason why the 86 and brz don’t get turbos it’s because according to engineering explained he said that turbos add complexity, more weight, and cost. You gotta add an Inter cooler and swap new headers, exhaust pipe, and aftermarket intake. But I agree with Roman that the brz and 86 needs a turbo for more fun! But when your turboing the brz you need to add more horsepower for less weight and complexity! So yes I disagree with engineering explained and agree that yes the brz definitely needs a turbo for more fun to be as fast as the Supra!

I test drove one briefly and it didn't seem THAT slow that it 'needed' a turbo, but that's not on track. I wonder if they didn't want to do a turbo version because they were planning on doing the Supra and didn't want to jeopardize their potential Supra sales having two models so close together.
