One of the first things Cynthia shared with me is she used to sleep in a box. Cynthia now rests on a reclining chair living homeless in New York City. She felt it was an upgrade from sleeping on the cold ground.
My work is far from scientific. I do not collect data on people. However, I do visit the same cities and walk through the same areas. Each time I visit a location, street homelessness has noticeably grown, and this trip to New York, street homelessness is far more visible. More people are sleeping outside, and there are far more seniors and elderly homeless women living on the streets of Manhattan.
Cynthia says she has been homeless for seven years. In this interview, she shares about the abuse women face on the streets and the horror of the NYC shelter system. Cynthia says she is on a housing list, but the wait seems endless. Unfortunately, millions of homeless Americans are waiting for housing, but little to no housing is available.
This is where you can make a difference. Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeopl... to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

@@IIII...... you know its not true. Yes there are programs as well as housing programs that states you must be on the streets over a year to be eligible to be on their waiting list. This I know from attending conferences in downtown Los Angeles. Sickens me to think they also are keeping them on the streets. With covid they got people living in their cars off the streets first. But like you've mention they need to seek help. Certain places have their own standards on whether they will put their all into helping if they don't feel you are ready. You hear a lot when you volunteer.

Well thats nice enough to feel shame. Now do something about it instead. Get some homeless person warm socks/gloves or just warm food if you can, feeling shame doesn't help. I was too. It was rough. Government doesn't care. Homelessness is out of control. Not all homeless are drug, alcohol or mental. I've done neither. It was loss of job. Homelessness can't be ignored. While Government elect sitting in their warm homes the unaffordable housing and homelessness crisis is a ticking time bomb that is going to explode. I pray she gets shelter. God sees those evil men abusing her on the street. One day, they'll answer for their actions. Just bcz she's homelessness doesn't give them the right to hit her and abuse her as they walk by. That made me so upset.

One of the things I find truly outrageous is the way the wealthy real estate developers are just allowed to tear down older, affordable apartment buildings, forcing out the long-time residents, and put up more and more "luxury" buildings with astronomical rents or exorbitant purchase prices, in their place. The city is fast becoming a bland, expensive and generic landscape. I hope and pray this woman finally finds a home.

Something's off about her situation. Story time; summer 2012 my psychotic brother chased me out of the house. I spent a month at what the time was one of only two women's intake shelters in New York city, the Franklin armory women's shelter. After a month of assessing my situation they transferred me to Susan's Place on Jerome Avenue in the Bronx, since although my situation was considered domestic violence, my particular scenario didn't fit the criteria they were capable of handling. That shelter however did meet my immediate needs, in that wherever I was to stay was to be within walking distance of the subway, within the five boroughs and a half an hour's distance from Manhattan. I only stayed there a month before I was able to find my own place, which is an outlier compared to most economic homeless clients. Granted these shelters are less than ideal, but they do meet your needs and they will work to your whim if you remind them what kind of scrutiny they're under, such as the close eye of the ACLU; American Civil Liberties Union and the like. Furthermore; New York State and Massachusetts are unique in this one sector compared to most other of the lower 48 states; they are mandatory shelter states. Even if you get kicked out of a shelter, it's a temporary trespass until the rules were fresh for the violating individual after a certain time. By their state law, the local government needs to get you housed is what I'm saying. I'm also saying that something is not adding up about her situation. Unless she's a constant rule breaker or the shelter staffs are constantly harassing her and not addressing her disability accessibility needs as required by the Americans with disabilities act, there's no valid reason she should be living like this right now nor should she have been sleeping rough on the street sort of homeless for as long as she's been.

Hurting people, of any race, is unacceptable. Unfortunately, Black women are attacked on the streets as well. There are a lot of Black men on the street. Many are mentally ill. Some have been abused themselves. It would be nice if abused people had greater empathy towards others. Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way. 😕 I pray that you and others on the street find a home.

The more I watch these videos it’s so clear that the powers to be, don’t want to fix this. Is it just greed plain and simple? “Market rate rent” which is out of control is fueling this. If so, then I see it as evil among us and even more reason to trust in God. Having something bigger to focus on gives you a shot at not “losing it”. I worked in health care system in ohio helping people get off the streets. This fine lady needs to go to free health clinic get physical , to get the medical diagnosis. This will give her a platform for getting into a nursing home. She would need the help of her social worker. Then go to dental clinic that is either a teaching school or set up to take care of the poorer clients. Also some Regular dentist will give of their services to these clinics If you need medication some pharmacist will agree to give medication to people in need. But they are hard to find. The system is in place but you have to be the glue to stick it together. Good luck.

Yes, I agree notiify your people in government, and yes I will notify them I have two in my area. In the past I did notify them but will do again. To all good folks in our country. I worked in nursing homes and in metal health facilities and at state mental health institutions. I worked up from aid work at 19 years old to Director of Nursing and corporate nurse running several homes in different cities. My health has taken over me that's why I quit. When I was in charge my companies made more money then they dreamed of spending. I got my regular pay. Now ... having said that Getting the homeless off the streets is a tying together of the many systems that we already have up and running. First find the home that is licensed ( always stay in the Federal systems) and in need of patients. Do not at that time notify the social worker. Next get the client and they need to have a social security number assigned to them. If need be you take them to the county social services, Not the nursing home social worker. Will continual

Next take the client to free health clinic. Have doctor do a medical physical. We need the doctor to list as many medical conditions as the client has. IF THERE IS A MENTAL CONDITION ASK THE DOCTOR TO PLACE THAT DIAGNOSIS IN 3RD OR 4TH PLACE. (As long as client is not in psychotic episode. If there are you must treat that medically first.) Next contact the social worker at nursing home for interviews and then admission. Bring client with paperwork to social worker. Unless something unexpected happens you got your first admission.
